折り畳み可能なスマホ（foldable phone）への期待が高まっているようですが、実際のところその開発、実用化は簡単ではないようです。

スマホ市場は既に飽和状態なのか、伸び悩んでいるとも言われます。折り畳み可能なスマホはイノベーションという意味で市場の起爆剤にもなり得るのですが、故に各社が鎬を削るところでもあります。

先日コンシューマーエレクトロニクスショー（CES）の記事を取り上げましたが、中途半端な製品は、却ってブランドイメージを下げてしまうリスクがあります。

各社開発に力を入れているのでしょうが、他社の出方も気になるところでしょう。

ギャラクシーのブランドを展開するサムスンが開発を進めているとされる最中、Xiaomi（というメーカーを知りませんが）がプロトタイプを公表したそうです。

と表現されています。

ここで、"steal one's thunder"というフレーズは、（人を）出し抜く、先を行く、という意味のイディオムです。

人のお株を奪う、という日本語表現も近いかもしれませんね。

ところで、何故、"thunder"（雷）を盗む、という表現が生まれたのでしょうか？

一説によると、ルーツは18世紀の英国に遡るようです。当時演劇の舞台では演出上の効果音として雷の音を模すのに様々な工夫を凝らしていたそうですが、とある売れない劇作家が新しい方法を発明し、自身の新作で使ったそうです。

不幸にも新作はヒットしませんでしたが、雷の効果音に使った「仕掛け」だけは他の劇中で模倣されたそうです。売れない作家は、自分の新作は売れず、アイデアだけ盗まれたことに立腹したということです。

つまり、「俺の雷のアイデアを盗みやがった！」という訳です。
