何かと話題になることが多い、オカシオ＝コルテス議員ですが、先日とは別件でまたもヘッドラインを賑わしています。

NYCのメトロポリタン美術館で行われたファッションショーに参加した同議員の装いが議論を呼んだものです。白地に大きく赤い文字で"Tax the Rich"（富裕層に課税せよ）という政治スローガンが大きくプリントされたドレスを着用していました。

我こそは富裕層というセレブがこぞって参加するようなショーに自ら出席しておきながら、そのような政治スローガンは正当なのか？という批判が出ている模様です。（参加費は3万ドル、議員の特注ドレスもウン万ドル、だとか。）

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., had more to say Tuesday defending herself against backlash sparked by her controversial Met Gala gown emblazoned with the words "Tax the Rich," after saying Monday night she intended to carry the message into a wealthy space and borrowed the dress because "while the Met is known for its spectacle, we should have a conversation about it."

Republicans on social media questioned why Ocasio-Cortez would attend an event for society’s elite if she wants to tax the rich.

Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla., said in a tweet Tuesday that Ocasio-Cortez "wants to tax the rich but took time out of her busy schedule to hob knob with NY and Hollywood elites who paid $30k to attend the #MetGala (and deduct it from their taxes)."

オカシオ=コルテス議員に噛みついた共和党議員のツイートが引用されているのですが、"hob knob"という表現が引っ掛かりましたので調べたのですが、辞書に見当たりません。

色々と調べてみるとこれは、"hobnob"というのが本来のスペルで、"hob knob"はその異綴り（？）のようでした。

別記事では、ツイッターの引用ではありませんが、"hobnob"となっています。

Ironically, that meeting is subsidized by taxpayers. If a rich person wanted to pay about $35,000 for an ultra-exclusive opportunity to hobnob with stars and be photographed doing so . . . well, she’d be out $35,000.

この"hobnob"の意味を不勉強にして知りませんでしたが、

親しく付き合う、酒を酌み交わす、懇談する

という意味だそうです。

語源が興味深いのですが、"hob"というのは動詞haveの中英語habbenから来ており（"nob" についてはnabben、否定の接辞ne-とhabbenの結合したもの）、"hob nob"は"have (or) have not"という意味があったようです。（ヘミングウェイの小説「持つと持たぬと」（To Have and Have Not）を思い出します。）

意味合いはgive or take、さらにalternately（交代で、かわるがわる）と発展したようで、乾杯で酒を酌み交わす際に、お互いの健康を祈ってかわるがわる杯を取って飲むことを"drink hobnob"と表現しました。

現在の意味合いはこの名残なのだそうです。
