米医薬食品局（FDA）が、電子タバコのブランドJuulの販売差し止めを通達しました。

有害性が否定出来ないという理由によるもののようです。

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration ordered Juul Labs Inc. to stop selling its vape devices and cartridges on Thursday, saying that there is "insufficient evidence to assess the potential toxicological risks" of using the products.

Juul disputed the FDA's claims in a statement, and said the company plans to appeal the agency's decision.

"We respectfully disagree with the FDA’s findings and decision and continue to believe we have provided sufficient information and data based on high-quality research to address all issues raised by the agency," Joe Murillo, Juul's chief regulatory officer, said in a statement.

電子タバコの功罪に関してはこれまでも何度か関連記事を取り上げてきました。

Juulのおかげで紙巻きタバコをやめることが出来たという人もおり、販売禁止に困惑している利用者もいるようです。

当のメーカーはこの決定に不服のようですが、その声明に、

respectfully disagree with the FDA’s findings and decision

とあるのを興味深く思いました。

"respectfully"というのは説明するまでもなく、敬意を表して、相手を尊重して、という意味ですが、続く動詞"disagree"との取り合わせが意外にも思われたのです。

"respectfully"に関しては、手紙文の末尾に、

respectfully yours

などと締め括り、これは日本語だと「敬具」くらいに相当するというのはよくご存知のことと思います。

"respectfully disagree"については、お上の裁定であるから尊重はするけれども、納得行かない、という思いが滲み出ているようです。畏れながら、同意致しかねる、といった感じでしょうか。

コーパスで検索してみると、"respectfully disagree"という用例はかなり多く、同様の言い回しには、"respectfully decline"、"respectfully dissent"などが見られます。

これらの表現はいわゆる謙譲表現であると言うことができるでしょう。
