この単語の語源は、Horace Walpoleという人の書いたお伽話の題名、The Three Princes of Serendipに因むと英和辞典に載っています。

このお伽話の主人公らが「探してもいない珍宝をうまく偶然に発見する」（研究社新英和大辞典）という設定なのだそうです。
