昨日に続き、機密文書持ち出し問題で起訴されたトランプ前大統領に関する記事から引用です。

大方の予想通り、フロリダ州マイアミの裁判所に出廷したトランプ氏は無罪を主張したとあります。

Donald Trump pleaded not guilty Tuesday to the first federal charges ever filed against a U.S. president, former or current.

Trump turned himself in at a Miami federal courthouse in the afternoon and was booked on the second set of criminal charges he has faced this year. 元大統領の起訴という前代未聞の事態と、大統領選の行方を左右するということもあって、裁判所周辺は厳戒態勢が敷かれた模様です。

後段にそのくだりがありますが、

A smattering of protesters, supporters and critics of Trump, gathered outside the federal courthouse throughout the day.

ともあります。

ここでの"smattering"の意味ですが、

少数の、まばらの

という意味で、"a smattering of 〜"というパターンで使われているもので、

a group of （名詞）

a number of （名詞）

などといったフレーズに並ぶ表現と言えます。

それでは"smattering"とは何か？

"smatter"という単語から来ていますが、その意味は、生半可な知識、うろ覚え、片言、といったものです。

"a number of 〜"などと同じパターンとはいえ、ちょっと変わった表現ですね。

ところで、この件に関する報道映像などを見るにつけ、裁判所周辺に集まっている人達はとても「少数、まばら」（a smattering of）には見えないのですが、これはどうしたことでしょう。

厳戒態勢を敷いたということからも、矛盾するようにも思われるのですが・・・。
