訪米中の岸田首相は現地時間10日、ホワイトハウスでバイデン大統領と会談、共同声明を発表しました。

これに先立つこと、ホワイトハウスはSouth Lawnと呼ばれる南側芝生にて岸田、バイデン両氏は観閲式セレモニーに参加したのですが、その際見られたバイデン氏の様子が注目されています。

その「様子」というのは、かねてより懸念されているバイデン氏の高齢を如実に示す挙動ということに他なりません。

とあるのですが、"shuffle (around)"という動詞を取り上げたいと思います。

カタカナで「シャッフル（する）」と言いますけれども、その意味は、順番をばらばらにして混ぜる、ランダム化する、というものではないでしょうか？

ここではその意味では解釈できず、つまりカタカナの「シャッフル」が邪魔するのですが、辞書で"shuffle"を引くと最初に出てくる意味は、

To move with short sliding steps, without or barely lifting the feet

(American Heritage Dictionary)

であり、足を引き摺る（引き摺って歩く）、という意味です。また、不器用な、ぎこちない動きをする、という意味でもあります。

記事に引用されているビデオクリップを見ましたが、岸田首相と並んで芝生を歩くバイデン氏の動きは非常にぎこちなく、老人、かなり耄碌したお年寄りのそれという印象を強く受けます。

史上最高齢の大統領の再選は如何に。
