英軍の訓練施設から脱走した馬がロンドンの街中を疾駆するという珍事があったそうです。

騎兵部隊の訓練中、近くの建設現場の大きな物音に驚いた馬5頭が突然走り出し脱走、街中を駆け抜け、多数の怪我人も出た模様です。

The British army has recovered several horses after they broke free from the prestigious Household Cavalry and bolted through London on Wednesday morning.

Six soldiers and seven horses from the Life Guards, part of the Household Cavalry, were conducting an extended exercise on Wednesday morning, the army said.

The animals were spooked when some concrete fell off a conveyor belt being used in nearby construction work and hit the ground, the army added.

ここでは、急に駆け出す、逃げ出す、という意味の動詞として使われています。突然に、素早いスピードで動くという意味合いがあります。

カタカナで「ボルト」というと、部品や物を結合、締結するネジをまず想起するのではないでしょうか？

この「ボルト」も英単語としては同じ"bolt"です。

語源に目を向けてみますと、"bolt"というのはクロスボウで用いる太矢（一般的に知られる弓矢の矢よりも太くて短いもの）のことを指したそうです。

速いスピードで飛んで行くというのはこの太矢の動きから出てきた意味合いですが、我々が知っている「ボルト」もやはりこの太矢の形状から来ていると知り、意外に思ったものです。

ちなみに、"a bolt from the blue"といった表現に見られるように、"bolt"には雷の意味もありますが、やはりクロスボウの太矢から来ています。
