米ニューヨークのアップルストアで万引き犯に間違われて逮捕された男性が、誤認逮捕に至ったのはアップルストアの顔認識技術のせいだと訴えを起こしました。

何と10億ドルの損害賠償を請求しているそうです。

アップル側は、店内防犯カメラに顔認識技術は導入していないと主張しているようですが、逮捕した刑事は顔認識技術により犯人を特定したと法廷で証言したそうです。

一方、刑事はストアから提供された画像と容疑者の顔が似ていないと思ったとも証言しており、ちぐはぐな印象を与えています。結局のところ、容疑者は無罪放免となりました。

とある部分の"wiggle room"という表現を今日は取り上げたいと思います。

辞書を引くと、「（どうにでも解釈できる言葉の）余地」とありました。

動詞の"wiggle"には、小刻みに動く（動かす）、くねくね動かす、という意味があります。

もぞもぞ、でも良いのかもしれませんが、ポイントとしては完全に固定されていたり、あるいは静止しているのではなく、動く（動かす）ことができる、というところにあるように思われます。

ちょっと長いですが、コーパスで検索した用例から1つ引用します。
