straight vs. strait ー straight-jacket

ファッションには疎い私ですが、グッチというブランド名くらいは知っています。

そのグッチが、ファッションショーでの演出により炎上しているようです。ちなみに炎上するのは今回が初めてではありません。


A runway model has staged a protest at Gucci's Spring/Summer 2020 show at Milan Fashion Week, describing the fashion house's decision to "use the imagery of straight jackets and outfits alluding to mental patients" as "unimaginative" and "offensive."
Ayesha Tan-Jones, a model in the show, held up their hands while on the runway to display the message "mental health is not fashion."

"As an artist and model who has experienced my own struggles with mental health, as well as family members and loved ones who have been affected by depression, anxiety, bipolar and schizophrenia, it is hurtful and insensitive for a major fashion house such as Gucci to use this imagery as a concept for a fleeting fashion moment," the model said in a statement posted to Instagram.

問題になったのは、”straight jackets”を着用したモデルによる演出です。

この”straight jackets”とは、囚人や精神障害者が暴れてしまうことのないように拘束することを目的とする「拘束服」のことを指しますが、正しいスペルは”straitjacket”であることをご存知でしょうか？

つまり、”straight”と”strait”の違いです。

“Straight”という単語にはまっすぐな、という意味が真っ先に浮かびます。一方、”strait”は狭い、窮屈な、という意味であり、名詞としては海峡という意味もあります。

本来、”straitjacket”だったものが、異綴りの”straight〜”になってしまったのはやむを得ない背景があるようです。

Merrian-Webster Dictionaryのサイトではこの話題を取り上げています。


One reason for the variant spellings might be due to interpretation. A person wearing a straitjacket is essentially forced into a straight position, and straight carries a connotation of discipline—not deviating from a path, as opposed to wandering astray—that could encourage the spellings straightjacket and straightlaced.

つまり拘束服（straitjacket）を着せられた人は必然的に真っ直ぐ（straight）な姿勢になってしまうという訳で・・・。

ちなみに今回引用したCNNの記事では、”straitjacket”のスペルも見られ、記事を書いたライター自身、スペルを混同していたのではないかと思われます。

最後に、”straight”と”strait”は語源を全く異にする単語です。

“Straight”は古英語streccan（stretchという単語と同根）に由来するのに対し、”strait”はラテン語stringere（strictやstringentという単語と同根）に由来します。
