「デバイス」の意味 ー left to your own devices

「デバイス」（”device”）と聞くと、すぐにスマホとかタブレット端末をイメージしてしまいがちです。

それくらい今の世の中は「デバイス」が席巻しているということですが、英単語の”device”には意思、望み、という意味があることをご存知でしょうか？

正確にいうと、このような意味合いの「デバイス」は複数形で、”devices”です。

成句の類に入ると思いますが、


leave (someone) to his/her own devices


というフレーズは、人に思うように（勝手にさせる）という意味になります。

Collins Cobuild Dictionary of Idiomsでは下記のように解説されています。


If someone is left to their own devices, they are left to do what they want, or to look after themselves without any help.

“device”の語源を辿ると、古フランス語devisは意思（will）の意味であり、この単語が元々はそのような意味であったことが分かります。

その後、”device”は意匠やデザイン、仕掛けとか装置、そして現代の情報端末というように意味を発展させてきたのですが、”leave (someone) to his/her own devices”には何となく、1人1台のスマホ時代に個人個人が思い思いに端末画面に注視している状況とイメージが符合するようで、面白いですね。
