quicksand

"quicksand"という単語をご存知でしょうか？私は初めて見ました。

辞書を引くと、「流砂」という、これまた見慣れない日本語なのですが、水を含んだ砂地のことを指すようです。

つまり、泥濘のようなものですが、柔らかく流動性があるために足を取られ、不安定であるということから、危険な状態、泥沼、ピンチ、という意味で使われます。

この単語を知ることになったきっかけの記事は以下のようなものでした。

記事の内容はと言うと、今年の1月にトランプ前大統領支持者らがワシントンの連邦議事堂を占拠した事件で、原因追及を行う議会の足並みがどうも揃わないようです。

詳細は記事をお読みいただければと思いますが、政治や議会の色んなしがらみがあるのでしょうか、なかなか思った通りに進まない状況を、

political quicksand

と表現しているようです。

“quicksand”のニュアンスを知りたいと思い、コーパスでいくつか用例を拾ってみました。

Last fall, the invisible hand was pulling the big banks into financial quicksand. Without the strong arm of the federal government, as Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner recently affirmed, " none of them would have survived.

望ましくない状況に陥ってしまうというネガティブな意味合いだと分かります。

ところで、Merriam-Websterの辞書の定義では、

something that entraps or frustrates

とありますが、American Heritage Dictionaryでは、

A place or situation into which entry can be swift and sudden but from which extrication can be difficult or impossible

とあり、少し異なっています。すなわち、危うい状態、困った状況に陥るという意味合いは同じですが、それに至るのが急であるという意味合いが付加されています。

これは恐らくquick~の意味合いによるものだろうと思うのですが、今度は辞書で"quick"の意味をよくよく調べてみると、その中には古い時代の意味合いとして、

（水、流れなどが）よどんでいない、流れている；（砂などが）（水を含んで）どろどろになった

（ランダムハウス英和辞書）

という意味が載っていました。

これに関連して、"quick"という形容詞は、

生きている、活発な

という意味があります。

ここで思い出すのは、水銀を意味する"quicksilver"でしょう。

水銀をラテン語では、

argentum vivum（生きた銀）

ともいうそうですから、“quick”の意味と通じるという訳です。
