新型コロナウィルス関連のニュース記事で、"long-hauler"という表現が使われているのを見かけました。

以下のようなものですが、今日見たFox Newsの記事のタイトルです。

ご存知と思いますが、"haul"は手繰るとか、引っ張る、物を輸送する、という意味の動詞で、"long-haul"には長距離の（輸送）とか、長時間に渡る（航行）いうような意味があり、よく使われるのは、

long-haul truck（長距離トラック）

long-haul flight（長時間のフライト）

などといった表現です。

このような"long-haul"がパンデミックのコンテクストで使われているのは意外でした。

記事中、"long-haulers"が、新型コロナウィルスに感染した人のことを指しているということは分かります。

引用した記事に限らず、報道によれば、新型コロナの症状から回復した後も長く尾を引く症状に悩まされる人が少なくないと聞きます。

"long-hauler"とはそのような後遺症状の影響を受けている人を指すのであろうと思われましたが、手元の辞書にはそのような意味では載っていないのです。

Merriam-Webster onlineによれば、"long-hauler"のこのような意味合いはCOVID-19をきっかけに新しく生まれたものだそうです。

どうりで手持ちの辞書には載っていないわけですが、Merriam-Webster onlineでは最新の意味として下記のように定義が追加されています。

medical : a person who experiences one or more long-term effects following initial improvement or recovery from a serious illness (such as COVID-19)

新型コロナパンデミックをきっかけにこれ以外にも新しい表現が生まれ、2021年1月に新たに追加されたそうです。（Merriam-Webster online）
