ビットコイン、乱高下 ― whipsaw

小生は投資に関しては全くの素人、未経験者ですが、ビットコインなどと言われるとさらに縁の無い世界です。

しかしながらニュース記事を見ていますと、いやでもビットコインやら、仮想通貨に関する話題も目にします。

大抵はあまり関心がありませんので読み飛ばしますが、今日は珍しく取り上げることになりました。

Bitcoin is rebounding Monday after its value was cut in half over the weekend as China signaled a tougher stance against the cryptocurrency.

According to prices tracked by Coindesk, Bitcoin is up about 15% as of Monday afternoon, trading around $37,000 per coin. On Sunday, the world's largest cryptocurrency plunged to as low as $31,000. 

Still, large corporate holders of Bitcoin, appear to be in for the long haul.

取り上げられているのは、ビットコインの相場が乱高下したという話のようなのですが、先週末の土曜日に1ビットコインあたり3万1千ドルまで下落したところが、週明けに3万7千ドルに高騰したということです。

注目したいのは、記事のタイトルで使われている、

whipsaw

という動詞です。

この単語を見たことがありませんでした。

辞書を引くと、スペルの"saw"（のこぎり）という部分から想像がつくように、細身ののこぎりのことで、両端のハンドルを2人が持ってひくことで太い木材などを切り落とすのに使われるそうです。

ところで、この「2人が持ってひく」というところがどうやらポイントのようなのですが、1人は木材に対して上目の位置から、もう1人は対照的に斜め下の位置から、というポジションを取ってのこぎりを引きます。

この視覚的な位置関係は、（その角度が急であればあるほど）株価などが急激な高騰、もしくは下落をする様がグラフで表されているのを想起させるようです。

Investopediaのサイトによりますと、下記のような説明があります。

The origin of the term whipsaw is derived from the push and pull action of lumberjacks when cutting wood with a saw of the same name. A trader is considered to be "whipsawed" when the price of a security they have just invested in abruptly moves in the opposite and unexpected direction.

ところで、"whipsaw"はこのような乱高下の意味の他、二重の損害を被る、という意味でも用いられるようです。

特に、株取引の世界においては、高値で購入したものを底値で売らなければならないような局面に立たされるような場合を言うそうです。

Merriam-Webster onlineによれば、このような「二重損」、つまりダブルパンチというような意味合いについても、"whipsaw"が2人によって両側から切り込むのに用いられることから発展した意味であると解説しています。

A whipsaw is a type of handsaw worked by two people, one of whom stands on or above the log being sawed and the other below it, usually in a pit. The tool dates back to the 15th century, but it was not until the 1870s that anyone thought to use the saw's name figuratively to describe situations in which someone or something is doubly "cut," or hurt. Today, the word is commonly used when discussing financial crises or losses. For example, just recently a chief executive explained in a press statement that his company was "whipsawed in the fourth quarter as key industries were hit by a rapidly deteriorating economy and plunging commodity prices." 最初に引用した記事における"whipsaw"の意味合いとしては上記のいずれの意味にも取れそうです。
