昨日、5月5日はこどもの日の祝日でした。

邦紙朝刊は日本における出生率が最低記録を更新したと報じていました。ここ数十年で低下傾向に歯止めがかからないようです。

また、パンデミック下で出産を控える傾向も影響しているという指摘でした。

同様の傾向は米国でも見られるようです。

Well, as experts predicted, so far it seems to be shaping up to be more of a baby bust.

New data released by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for Health Statistics on Wednesday doesn't paint the full picture, but it gives us a glimpse of what's going on. The birth rate in the United States fell in the last quarter of 2020, decreasing significantly -- more than 6% -- from the same time period the previous year.

出生率（birth rate）の低下について、

a baby bust

と表現している箇所があります。

一時期はベビーブーム（baby boom）になるかとさえ予測されたものですが、その逆、つまり"boom"の逆の"bust"という訳です。

日本語のカタカナとして「ブーム」に馴染みはあっても、"bust"は何故かカタカナになっていないのですが、"bust"には打撃とか失敗、破産、不況、経済的衰退、といった意味があり、"boom"の対極概念として用いられます。（以前取り上げた"boom and bust"もご覧ください。）

"xxx bust"のパターンをいくつか拾ってみました。

"boom"と"bust"はひとつの「波」であり、それが交互にやってくることは避けられないものでありますが、"a baby bust"における"bust"は単なる一時的な低下を意味しているようにも思われます。

日本の出生率低下も盛り返してくれれば良いのですが。
