新型コロナウィルスは2019年末に中国の武漢で発生したと言われています。
武漢のウィルス研究所から流出したとか、コウモリを宿主とするウィルスから変異したとか言われていますが、WHOが調査に入ったものの原因は特定できておらず、感染拡大が起きた武漢の海鮮市場も取り壊されてもはや分からず仕舞いです。
この新型コロナウィルスの起源については、最近の米議会で改めて議論になったようで、共和党の議員がCOVID-19対策指揮のトップに立つFauci氏に詰め寄ったという記事を読みました。
Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., and Dr. Anthony Fauci sparred once again at a Senate hearing Tuesday, this time over the funding of the controversial Wuhan Institute of Virology -- the Chinese lab that is believed to have played a role in the initial outbreak of COVID-19.
Fauci and Paul have come to verbal blows before over both COVID-19 and related restrictions such as lockdowns and mask-wearing. On Tuesday, Paul zeroed in on gain of function research -- which works on making pathogens deadlier or more easily transmissible. He alleged that a U.S. virologist had been working with the Chinese institute on such research and said it was funded by the National Institute of Health (NIH).

共和党議員のRand Paul氏はこれまでにも度々、Fauci氏と衝突してきましたが、今回は新型コロナウィルスの起源について、武漢の研究所を米国NIHが資金面でサポートしてきたと指摘し、批判したようです。
Fauci氏は資金提供の事実は無いと否定しています。
ところで、記事中、"gain of function (research)"という言葉が度々出てくるのですが、意味がよく分からずにいました。
引用した部分から、"research"（研究）の一種だということだと思いますが、"gain of function"という研究手法に問題があった、というように読めます。
別記事では以下のようなくだりがあり、この"gain of function"というものが具体的にどういうものか多少見えてきました。

科学に疎い小生ですが、"gain of function (research)"というのは、病原体の感染力や致死性を変化させることを目的とした研究である（故に、問題があるとされる手法）と読めます。
日本語では、「機能獲得（型の研究）」という訳があてられているようです。
実のところ、最初は"gain"の解釈で戸惑ったのですが、これを
gain-of-function research
というようにハイフンでつないでいる表現も見られ、そうであればもう少し分かりやすかったとも思います。
新型コロナウィルスの起源については、真実のほどは分かりませんが、そのような公衆衛生に危うい研究がパンデミックの引き金になったのだとしたら、とんでもないことをしでかしてくれたもんだと思いますね。
