3月も半ばに入って暖かい日が増えました。今日などは真冬のような気温ですが、三寒四温を繰り返しながら春は着実に進むのでしょう。

暖かくなるこの季節、困るのは花粉の飛散です。

気温上昇が始まると共に、小生の鼻もムズムズ、目も痒い、という始末。

最近の研究によると、花粉の飛散は年々早まり、終わりも遅くなっているのだそうです。

つまり、アレルギーに悩まされる期間が長くなっているというのですが、これには地球温暖化と関連があるという話です。

The seasonal sniffling and sneezing could last longer for allergy sufferers. A recent study published in the journal Nature Communications suggested that climate change will lengthen allergy season. 

Two scientists from the University of Michigan examined climate data and pollen data and found that pollen emissions later this century would likely start 10-40 days earlier in the spring and end up to 19 days later in the fall.

アレルギーという言葉はカタカナでも定着していますが、英単語の"allergy"は実のところ造語なんだそうです。（知りませんでした。）

オーストリアの小児科医であったClemens von Pirquet医師が20世紀初めに抗原となる物質に対する過敏反応を指す術語としてギリシャ語から作ったと言われています。

接頭辞allo-は、他の、異なる（other）という意で、-ergyは仕事（work）を意味するギリシャ語ergonから来ています。（エネルギーenergyに同じ。）

つまり、外部要因（抗原）によってもたらされる反応、ということです。
