ウクライナ問題でポーランドを訪問中のバイデン米大統領が、ロシアのプーチン大統領を名指しして、権力の座に留まるべきでない男、とコメントしたことが波紋を呼んでいます。

バイデン氏は後刻、怒りの余り出た言葉と説明し、取り消すつもりは無いとしましたが、米政府の政策としてロシアの体制変更を目標としている訳ではないとも釈明しています。

この一件は多くのメディアで失言と報道されています。事務方は相当慌てたようで、そのせいか、その後のバイデン氏はちゃんとメモを見ながら記者会見に対応するようになったようです。

President Biden held a "cheat sheet" of prepared answers for a key question during his White House news briefing Monday – a question about why his remarks on Saturday suggested support for regime change in Russia.

Several reporters asked the president to address his comment, "For God’s sake, this man cannot remain in power," which he made at the conclusion of a Saturday speech in front of the Royal Castle in Warsaw, Poland.

Biden insisted he is not "walking back" his comments, seeking to separate his wish for President Vladimir Putin not to be leading Russia from an official policy that would seek to remove him.

"I was expressing my outrage at the behavior of this man," Biden said, calling the Russian president's behavior "outrageous" and that his comments about him were "more an aspiration than anything."

多くのメディア報道では写真付きで、バイデン氏が手に持っているメモがクローズアップしています。拡大したら何が書かれているか読めそうでもあります。

政治家が会見や議会の答弁で用いるこのようなメモを指して、

cheat sheet

と呼ぶのは知っていました。"cheat"というと不正、詐欺というネガティブなイメージがあります。実際、"cheat sheet"はカンニングペーパーのことでもあるのですが、

a written or graphic aid (such as a sheet of notes) that can be referred to for help in understanding or remembering something complex

(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

という定義もあり、不正なものとは限らないようです。

ところで、引用したFox Newsの記事では、もうひとつ、

cue card

という表現が使われています。これは初めて見るものだったのですが、辞書を引くと、

テレビなどで視聴者に見えないようにセリフや指示・合図を書いて出演者らに示すカード

（研究社新英和大辞典）

とありました。

そもそも"cue card"の"cue"というのは、カタカナでも「キュー」と言いますが、合図とかきっかけという意味で、ラテン語のquando（英単語のwhenに相当）から来ています。つまり、タイミングを指示するものです。

ですから、舞台演劇などで、役者がセリフや動作に入る時の合図、きっかけとなるもの（仕草とか舞台照明とか）を指し、"cue card"というのは予め設定された展開を細かく記載したものだと言えます。

バイデン氏に渡された"cue card"には何が書いてあるのか分かりませんが、記者にこう聞かれたら、こう返す、みたいな内容なのかなと想像します。
