up against the wall

"up against the wall"という慣用表現があります。

行き詰まるとか、窮地に陥って、という意味です。イメージとしては、壁にぶち当たってしまった状況、物理的にそれ以上先に進めない、という感じでしょうか。

少し古い記事ですが、用例を引用します。

Bed Bath & Beyond also said Wednesday that sales at stores open for at least one year plunged 26% during its latest quarter.

(中略)

Bed Bath & Beyond is “financially up against the wall, so it’s going to be harder to stay in stock from key vendors,” she said.

手元にあるCollins Cobuild Dictionary of Idiomsでは、"come up against a brick wall"というフレーズで載っています。

If you say that you have come up against a brick wall, you mean that something is stopping you from doing what you want and preventing you from making any progress. Verbs such as 'run' and 'go' are sometimes used instead of 'come'.
