今朝のネットニュースのヘッドラインで、「バフムトで露失速　ウ反転攻勢へ」（ロイター）というのが目に留まりました。

その後、グーグルニュースでは同じ話題のNew York Post紙記事を見かけました。ロシア軍の「失速」を、

running out of steam

と表現しています。

"steam"（スチーム）は蒸気、水蒸気のことで、蒸気機関の動力の源となるものです。

したがって、口語的には、

力、精力、元気、気力

といった意味合いで用いられ、力を失う（losing steam）、精魂尽きる（ruuning out of steam）といった表現になります。
