トランプ前大統領が今週火曜日にも「逮捕されるかも知れない」とSNSに投稿し、騒然としています。

トランプ氏が過去に不倫関係にあったとされるポルノ女優に対して口止め料を支払ったとされる疑惑の捜査が行われていることに関係するようです。

大統領経験者の逮捕となると前代未聞の事態ですが、果たして明日・・・？

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) sought to tamp down former President Trump’s call for protests in response to a possible arrest of the president in connection to a Manhattan District Attorney investigation.

Trump said on Truth Social on Saturday that he could be arrested on Tuesday in connection with the Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg’s investigation into a hush-money payment made to adult film star Stormy Daniels during his 2016 campaign.

“Protest, take our nation back!” Trump said, sparking worries about potential violence.

“The last thing we want to have is somebody putting their thumb on the scale simply because they don’t agree with somebody else’s political view. That is what’s wrong, and that’s what infuriates people. And this will not hold up in court,” McCarthy said.

トランプ氏はSNSの投稿で、逮捕の動きには政治的背景があると批判し、支持者に抗議することを呼びかけましたが、関係者には2021年1月6日の連邦議事堂襲撃事件がフラッシュバックします。

共和党の下院議長McCarthy氏はそのようなことが繰り返されてはならないと、トランプ氏の言動と支持者を牽制するコメントをしています。

ところで、同氏の発言に、

The last thing we want to have is somebody putting their thumb on the scale simply because they don’t agree with somebody else’s political view.

というくだりがあります。

ここで使われている、

putting their thumb on the scale

というフレーズは手元の辞書には載っていないようなのですが、検索すると、

自らに有利になるように操作する、誤魔化す

というような意味なのだそうです。

肉屋が肉の量り売りをする際に親指を秤の皿に載せて目方を増やし、多く見せかけるごまかしをすることから生まれた表現だそうです。

で、このニュースの文脈としてはどういう意味なのでしょうか？

McCarthy氏の発言は、支持者に抗議を呼び掛けるトランプ氏の投稿内容に関してではありますが、"putting their thumb on the scale〜"という部分については、トランプ氏の訴追を検討しているニューヨーク州検察に向けられているようです。

"because〜"以下が補足となっていますが、政治信条が異なるという動機で不正なことをするべきでない、というのは民主党サイドであるニューヨーク州検察には、敵対するトランプ氏を貶めようとする意図があるのだ、と言っているのと同じでしょう。

実にMcCarthy氏は、逮捕については政治的背景があるとして、抗議は真っ当なものとも言っています。
