"de-transition"という言葉をご存知でしょうか？

私は初めてこういう言葉があるということを知ったのですが、性同一性障害により性転換を行った人が元の性に戻ることをいいます。

生物学的な性に違和感を覚えて、自認する性へと転換（transition）したものの、時を経て、やはり元の性へ逆戻り、という訳です。

The lead singer of the rock band Life of Agony is detransitioning more than a decade after coming out as transgender.

Mina Caputo, 50, revealed he will be living life as a male again, citing his gender dysphoria “has been cured” and announcing he has already started the process.

“Surgery has been booked to remove my fake breasts, and I will be lovingly living in my divine male self,” the rocker said in a video on Instagram, per Daily Mail.

引用した記事では、男性から女性へと性転換したロック歌手が、性同一性障害の身体違和感（gender dysphoria）を治癒し、再び男性に戻ることを公表したというものです。

トランスジェンダーの話はよく聞きます。また、性転換したことを後悔するケースもあるとは聞いたことがありますが、また元に戻るというケースは聞いたことがありませんでしたし、それを指す"de-transition"という言葉があることも知りませんでした。

手元の辞書にはもちろん載っていない単語なのですが、Oxford Dictionaryのオンライン版では以下のように定義されています。

Of a person who has undergone or is undergoing a gender transition: to halt or reverse the transitioning process.

同サイトによると、"de-transition"という表現は2004年からあるそうですから、かなり前から存在しているということで、知らなかったのは小生の無知であろうかと。

この記事を読んで、昨今の性多様性などの時流に乗って"transition"はもてはやされたり、喧伝されてはきたものの、その逆（"de-transition"）は・・・、というのが現実でしょうか。

primal scream

アメリカ大統領選は共和党のトランプ元大統領の圧勝という結果に終わりました。民主党のハリス副大統領を推していた有権者の落胆はいかほどでしょうか。

2016年のトランプ氏勝利の際にも起きたことですが、望まない大統領の就任を嫌ってアメリカ国外へ亡命するという人もいると聞きます。

亡命する訳にはいかない人はどうしたら良いのでしょうか？

The footage, which recently went viral on social media, was originally posted by a Facebook user named Tamara Gibbs. The event took place at Klode Park in Whitefish Bay on Nov. 9.

The extraordinary video shows around two dozen adult women screeching at the water. The screams eventually reach a crescendo, as video shows the shrieks getting gradually louder and louder until the group stopped.

トランプ氏の政策を支持できない、人柄が好かない、強権政治による支配への抵抗、ファシズムの台頭阻止、女性の敵・・・、等々、第二次トランプ政権への忌避感を説明する項目は枚挙に暇がないとも言えますが、その捌け口は叫ぶことだというのが、これも8年前と同様に、女性の間で拡がっているそうです。

記事のタイトルで"primal scream"とありますが、"primal"とは日本語で原初、原始、最初期の、という意味で、「原初の叫び」と呼ばれる精神療法の一種です。

原初療法（primal scream therapy）とは、幼少期における抑圧された衝動を解放させるもので、Merriam-Webster Dictionaryでは以下のように定義されています。

psychotherapy in which the patient recalls and reenacts a particularly disturbing past experience usually occurring early in life and expresses normally repressed anger or frustration especially through spontaneous and unrestrained screams, hysteria, or violence

「もしトラ」と呼ばれた事態がよりによって実現してしまったことへの怒り、フラストレーション、抑鬱感、これらを叫ぶことで解放しようということのようです。

walk the plank

第二次トランプ政権の閣僚指名が相次いで発表されていますが、司法長官の人事では揉めているようです。

というのも、指名候補のMatt Gaetz元下院議員に未成年者との性交渉疑惑が持ち上がっているためです。

最新のニュースによれば、トランプ氏としても適任ではないとの判断に至ったようで、Gaetz氏の指名はほぼ無くなった模様です。

以下に引用するのは数日前の記事です。

Numerous Republican lawmakers told Donald Trump and his team that they believe his pick to be attorney general, controversial Rep. Matt Gaetz, has little chance of being confirmed, according to multiple Senate Republican and people around Trump. And they’re privately hoping Trump doesn’t make them walk the plank.

Gaetz氏を司法長官に押そうとするトランプ氏に共和党上院議員らが懸念を表明していたということですが、問題のある人間を閣僚に据えることのリスクを説いて何とか思いとどまらせようとしていた訳です。

背景には上院議員の改選が2026年に控えているということがあります。脛に傷を持つGaetz氏の指名を支持したとなれば、自身の地位も危うい、かと言ってトランプ氏に反発すれば干されることも・・・、といったところでしょうか。

記事のくだり、

Trump doesn’t make them walk the plank

とあります。

"walk the plank"とは、目隠しをされて船の舳先から突き出した板の上を歩かせることで、昔海賊が捕虜をこのようにして死刑にしたことから来ており、

強制的に辞任（退職）させられる、詰腹を切らされる

という意味です。

接触事故 － clip

米ボストンの空港で2機の航空機が接触する事故があったそうです。

An investigation is underway after two planes operated by American Airlines and Frontier Airlines clipped wings on the tarmac at Logan International Airport in Boston on Monday.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), it happened around noon. An American Airlines Boeing 777 was being towed when it struck the wingtip of a Frontier Airlines Airbus A321 that was parked at the gate.

"While pulling into its gate at Boston (BOS), American Airlines flight 109, with service from LHR to BOS, made contact with a nearby parked aircraft," a spokesperson for American Airlines said in a statement to Fox News.

駐機中だったフロンティア航空機にアメリカン航空機が主翼を接触させたもののようです。

記事の写真を見ると、フロンティア航空機の主翼の端の部分が折れ曲がっているように見えます。が、Airbus A321は主翼の末端が上を向いており、この部分にアメリカン航空のボーイング777の主翼が接触したようです。

記事では、

clipped wings

と表現しています。"clip"には切り取る、刈るなどの意味があり、これらの意味が先に思いうかびますが、

掠る、接触する

という意味もあるんですね。（なお、「クリップで溜める」、「はさむ」というときの"clip"はまた別の単語です。）

クルマの接触事故の表現にも使われます。

Three women and four children were killed when their SUV crashed on Interstate 95 near Bangor. Investigators the vehicle clipped a car, plummeted down an embankment and slammed into trees and then flipped.

記事の事故は飛行機の翼が接触したもので、"clipped wings"ですが、以前取り上げた"clip

 the wings"には慣用句としての意味があります。

米国では感謝祭のホリデーシーズンですが、この事故の影響により事故機のフライトはキャンセルとなり、多くの旅行客に影響がでたとの事で、ある意味、"clipped the wings (of travelers)"とも言えます。

on the double

とある動画を観ていたところ、"on the double"という表現に出くわしました。

直ぐに、急いで、という意味で用いられていたのですが、辞書を引いてみるとまさにその意味で載っています。

コーパスで拾った用例をいくつか挙げます。（括弧内の日本語は拙訳。）

"on the double"というフレーズは慣用句として定着しているものと思われますが、命令文や聞き手に対する指示の文に続けて付加的に用いられることが多いようです。

Ms. Johnson, send Smith and Jones in here, on the double.

（ミズ・ジョンソン、スミスとジョーンズをここへ呼んで、至急。）

Take me to 10th Street. On the double.

（10番街にやってくれ。特急で。）

研究社新英和大辞典によると、"on the double"（また、"at the double"）という表現は軍事用語との説明（ラベル）があり、駆け足で前進（せよ）、という意味だそうです。
