tighten the screws

アメリカとイランの関係が険悪なことになっています。

イランの米大使館にロケット弾が撃ち込まれた事件を受けて、トランプ大統領は、米国と戦争になったらイランはお終いだ！とツイートしたそうです。

戦争にならなければ良いですが・・・。


President Trump is "doing the right thing" by warning Iran against taking military action against the United States, calling recent moves by the administration a way of "tightening the screws" on the government in Tehran, according to Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Lindsey Graham.

"If Iran wants to fight, that will be the official end of Iran. Never threaten the United States again," Trump tweeted Sunday.

The tweet came shortly after an apparent rocket attack inside Baghdad's heavily fortified "Green Zone," which is home to the American embassy.

という部分がありますが、”tighten(ing) the screws”というのは文字通りにはネジを締める、という意味です。

日本語でも緩んだネジを締め直す、と言いますが、この表現が比喩的に使われるコンテクストとしては、ルールや規律などが時間を経てあまり省みられなくなった状態において、改めて規律が遵守されるようにするというようなものかと思います。

英語の”screw(s)”には、辞書を引いてみると、
