Twitter has locked the account for Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's (R-Ky.) campaign after it shared a video of a protester's profanity-laced rant outside the senator's home.

記事のタイトルと本文に出てくる、"profanity"という単語はあまり馴染みがない単語かもしれません。

辞書を引くと、

といった日本語が載っています。

この"profanity"は形容詞の"profane"から来ているのですが、その"profane"の意味もやはり、冒涜的な、とか下品な、という意味です。

根本的には神を汚す、神聖なものを冒す、という意味があるのですが、語源に目を向けてみると、pro-は「～の前に」を意味する接頭辞、そして-faneはラテン語のfano（fanum）から来ており、寺院、神殿という意味だそうです。

つまり神殿の前（にいる）というのが字義通りの意味で、ランダムハウス英和によれば、神聖な神殿の中に入らず外に留まっていることから、神を冒涜するという意味に発展したということです。

ちなみに、同じくラテン語のfanum（寺院、神殿）を語源とする単語に"fanatic"（狂信的な）があります。
