 今日取り上げる単語、"aught"は誤解から生まれた単語です。

以前に「異分析」というテーマでいくつかの単語を取り上げたことがありますが、言語学的にはそれに相当するものです。

"aught"はゼロ（零）という意味なのですが、元々は"naught"という古期英語の単語から生じたものです。

不定冠詞との組み合わせで"a naught"とあったものが、"an aught"と間違って解釈されたために、"aught"が生まれた、とされています。

ところで、この"aught"という単語の用法に少し変わったものがあります。

A lot of these iconic brands are never coming back. I would loosely describe the 1990s and the aughts as the brand era.

複数形になっていますが、上記のように年代に続いて出てくる場合は、下記のMerriam-Websterの解説にあるように、

The noun aught means “zero,” or, when used in the plural as “the aughts,” a way of referring to the decade between 2000 and 2009.

2000年から2009年の10年間を指す表現として用いられています。
