eye-watering

新型コロナによる、いわゆる「巣ごもり需要」を受けて、ビデオゲーム業界は今年は記録的な売り上げを達成したようです。

Global video game revenue is up 20 percent in 2020, and will finish the year at an eye-watering $180 billion according to data from IDC. That figure beats the pre-coronavirus $100 billion that movies brought in 2019, and the $75 billion brought in by the major sports leagues around the world.

その収益は、スポーツと映画を足した2019年興行収入を上回って、1,800億ドルに達するそうですが、記事中、

とある部分の、"eye-watering"という形容に目が留まりました。

コンテクストからこの表現が、程度を強調しているのであろうということは分かるのですが、初めて見る表現でしたので、辞書を引いてみるのですが、載っていないのです。

似た表現の"mouth-watering"(涎が出そうな)を思い起こすに、"eye-watering"とは、涙(が出そうな状況)を連想させます。涙が出るほど高い、高額である、と言いたいのだろうと思われます。

涙が出るのは、辛いからでしょうか、それとも嬉しいからでしょうか?

(Merriam-Webster Onlineを始め)オンライン辞書にもほとんど見当たらないのですが、Collinsのサイトでは、


painful or extremely unpleasant


とありました。こちらは、買い手にとって高額すぎるという、つまり辛い場合を指しているようです。

引用した記事の場合は、ゲーム業界関係者には歓喜の涙を催すような状況だと言えます。

同様な表現に、"eye-popping"(目玉が飛び出るような)があります。
