見たことある？ ー monies

学校文法のおさらいです。

名詞にはいわゆる可算名詞（countable noun）と不可算名詞（uncountable noun）の2つの種類があるということは必ず教わることです。

お金を意味する"money"は、後者、即ち不可算名詞であり、"hundred moneys"などという表現はありません。英語のテストで、"moneys"などと書けば減点間違いなしです。

ところが！です。

"money"の複数形がちゃんとあって、そのスペルは"monies"というから驚きです。

きっかけは以下のCNNからの記事でした。

The newly-approved Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine is slowly making its way across the US. But those eagerly waiting their turn need to beware of dangerous scams and misinformation about the vaccine's distribution.

Several government organizations have warned against scammers promising access to the vaccine in exchange for sensitive personal information, as well as companies selling bogus treatments promising to cure or prevent Covid-19.

"The FBI has received complaints of scammers using the public's interest in COVID-19 vaccines to obtain personally identifiable information and monies through various schemes," the FBI wrote in a statement to CNN.

最後の段落に出てきますが、

scammers using the public's interest in COVID-19 vaccines to obtain personally identifiable information and monies 

というくだりの"monies"がそうです。

辞書にもちゃんと載っているので、またまた自身の不勉強を恥じました。

Merriam-Websterでは"money"のような不可算名詞が可算名詞的に複数形語尾を取るコンテクストについて下記のように説明しています。

However, like common mass nouns such as water and sand, there are occasions when money is inflected with a standard plural, like any count noun. It tends to occur when the reference is to discrete sums of money, obtained from a particular source or allocated to a particular cause.

とは言っても、“money”の複数形"monies"はそうそう目にする機会がない単語ではないかと思われます。

複数形のスペルとしては"moneys"もあるようですが、どちらかと言えば“monies”の方が多いそうです。

原形（単数形）が"money"であるところ、複数形のスペルが"monies"というのはこれまた奇異な感じがします。
