とあるくだりの“bump”とは、ここで昇給、賃上げ（タイトルでは"pay hike"）を指しています。

 

“bump”というのは出っ張りとか隆起のことで、road bump (bump on a road) は道路の凸凹、隆起です。

 

英和辞書で“bump”のエントリを眺めていると色々な意味で使われていることが分かりますが、名詞の定義では「昇進」（promotion）を意味する一方、「降格」（demotion）の意味もあるそうで、ひとつの単語に相矛盾する定義があることに驚きました。

 

手元にあるOxford Dictionary of Euphemismには“bump” (the) の意味合いに、

 

 

peremptory dismissal from employment

 

 

とあり、こちらは突然仕事をクビになってしまうことですが、そうすると「降格」の意味合いがあるというのもうなずけるところかと。

 

“bumped off”とも表現するそうですが、動詞の“bump”には押しやる、追い出す、またそうすることで自分がその場所やある立場に入るという意味がありますので、「クビ」や「降格」の意味合いはこのような動詞の用法と関連があるのでしょう。

 

降格の意味での用例は見つけられていないのですが、また追って・・・。

 

なお、昇給、賃上げの“bump”は多数の用例が確認できます。
