動詞の"guilt" ー guilt

チップ（心付け）についての話もこれまでも何度か取り上げてきましたが、今日もその「チップ」にまつわる話題です。

今春、米国旅行をした際に円安と物価高、そして米国文化である「チップ」の三重苦（！？）のために悲嘆に暮れたという話をしました。

またその話題かよ？と言わず、引用をお読み下さい。

One example of this is the touchscreen transaction with the cashier present. When a bunch of buttons pops up on the screen with various tip amounts to leave for services provided, even when no such service took place.

Have you noticed that whoever's at the register is looking right at you when that big tip screen comes up? It's almost like you must leave them something for doing nothing more but their job.

It seems to be getting out of control and many of us leave those tips when we really shouldn't because we were guilted into feeling like we had to.

I'm sure some New Jersey establishments that do this aren't even aware since the technology is set up that way. But I bet others are fully aware of it and they bank on subtly guilting you into leaving a few extra bucks.

先日も触れましたが、NYCのレストラン、カフェなどでは支払い時にタッチスクリーンの画面が示され、チップの金額をボタンで選択しなければならないという、客側にとって何とも悩ましいシステムになっています。

何も特別なサービスを受けた訳でもないのに、例えばコーヒーショップでは店頭でコーヒーを注文しただけなのに、チップを要求する画面が示されるのには閉口しました。

有無を言わせずというやり方ですが、ほとんどの客はチップを払わないのは気が咎めるような思いになるものです。

記事では、

because we were guilted into feeling like we had to

they bank on subtly guilting you into leaving a few extra bucks

とあります。

さらにこの記事のタイトルでは、

guilt a tip out of you

とも。

"guilt"という単語は名詞だとばかり思っていたので、動詞として使われるとは知りませんでした。（意味するところは話の流れから想像付くところですが。）

英和辞書に動詞の用法が載っていないのはどうしたことでしょう？

以下はAmerican Heritage Dictionaryでの動詞の定義です。

1. To make or try to make (someone) feel guilty: My roommate guilted me for forgetting to wash the dishes.

2. To cause (someone) to do something by arousing feelings of guilt: My roommate guilted me into washing the dishes.

引用記事本文の用例では2番目の意味合いが相当しますが、しばしば前置詞intoを伴って、into〜以下の行為を強いる、そうしないと気が咎めるような心持ちにさせる、という意味です。
