on-again, off-again

トランプ元大統領に性的暴行を受けたと主張する女性が起こした裁判の記事を読みました。

 

事は1990年代に遡るそうなのですが、トランプ氏側は否定しており、出廷を拒否しているというものです。

 

記事の引用をどうぞ。

トランプ氏は出廷しないという姿勢を取っていましたが、直前になって、やっぱり出廷すると言った、とあります。（が、結局のところ出廷しなかったもようです。）

 

引用の最後の部分で、

 

 

Trump’s on-again, off-again approach to testifying...

 

 

とありますが、“on-again, off-again”という見慣れない表現が目に留まったので取り上げました。

 

ランダムハウス英和辞書を引くと、

 

 

始まったと思ったら終わり終わったと思ったらまた始まる、断続的な、とぎれとぎれの

 

と載っており、さらに、

an on-again, off-again romance（熱したり冷めたりの恋愛）

という例文が紹介されています。

この言い回しですが、“on-again-off-again”、あるいは“on-again/off-again”と綴ることもあるようですが、要は、オン（on）になったり、オフ（off）になったり、状態が度々変わるさま、一定の状態が長続きしないことを指す表現なのだろうと思われます。

この「オン、オフ」は、上記の例文にもあるように、恋愛の話で使われることが多いようで、コーパスの検索では、

on-again, off-again relationship

on-again, off-again boyfriend/girlfriend

on-again, off-again affair

on-again, off-again romance

といった用例が上位に見られます。（つまり、くっついたり、離れたり、ということですよね。）

トランプ氏の記事での“on-again-off-again approach”の方は、どっちつかずの、ということだと解釈されます。

恋愛にしろ、態度にしろ、一体どっちやねん！？というニュアンスもありそうです。
