次期アメリカ大統領選は2024年ですが、先日取り上げた記事でも触れたように、保守層においては未だトランプ元大統領への期待があり、共和党では指名を勝ち取るのではないかという見方が強いようです。

引用した記事のタイトルに着目してみましょう。

Think Trump is a lock for the 2024 GOP nomination?

とありますが、ここでの"a lock"という表現が意味するところ不勉強にして知りませんでした。

鍵を意味する名詞の"lock"に同じですが、確実視されているもの、という意味があり、

one that is assured of success or favorable outcome

(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

という定義を確認できます。（一方、手元にある研究社新英和大辞典には載っていませんでした。）

鍵にしても、安全装置としてのロックにしても、固定して動かないようにする、というのが原義としてありますから、その意味で「確実なものにする」という意味合いになるのは納得感があります。

cue card

ウクライナ問題でポーランドを訪問中のバイデン米大統領が、ロシアのプーチン大統領を名指しして、権力の座に留まるべきでない男、とコメントしたことが波紋を呼んでいます。

バイデン氏は後刻、怒りの余り出た言葉と説明し、取り消すつもりは無いとしましたが、米政府の政策としてロシアの体制変更を目標としている訳ではないとも釈明しています。

この一件は多くのメディアで失言と報道されています。事務方は相当慌てたようで、そのせいか、その後のバイデン氏はちゃんとメモを見ながら記者会見に対応するようになったようです。

President Biden held a "cheat sheet" of prepared answers for a key question during his White House news briefing Monday – a question about why his remarks on Saturday suggested support for regime change in Russia.

Several reporters asked the president to address his comment, "For God’s sake, this man cannot remain in power," which he made at the conclusion of a Saturday speech in front of the Royal Castle in Warsaw, Poland.

多くのメディア報道では写真付きで、バイデン氏が手に持っているメモがクローズアップしています。拡大したら何が書かれているか読めそうでもあります。

政治家が会見や議会の答弁で用いるこのようなメモを指して、

cheat sheet

と呼ぶのは知っていました。"cheat"というと不正、詐欺というネガティブなイメージがあります。実際、"cheat sheet"はカンニングペーパーのことでもあるのですが、

a written or graphic aid (such as a sheet of notes) that can be referred to for help in understanding or remembering something complex

という定義もあり、不正なものとは限らないようです。

ところで、引用したFox Newsの記事では、もうひとつ、

cue card

という表現が使われています。これは初めて見るものだったのですが、辞書を引くと、

テレビなどで視聴者に見えないようにセリフや指示・合図を書いて出演者らに示すカード

（研究社新英和大辞典）

とありました。

そもそも"cue card"の"cue"というのは、カタカナでも「キュー」と言いますが、合図とかきっかけという意味で、ラテン語のquando（英単語のwhenに相当）から来ています。つまり、タイミングを指示するものです。

ですから、舞台演劇などで、役者がセリフや動作に入る時の合図、きっかけとなるもの（仕草とか舞台照明とか）を指し、"cue card"というのは予め設定された展開を細かく記載したものだと言えます。

バイデン氏に渡された"cue card"には何が書いてあるのか分かりませんが、記者にこう聞かれたら、こう返す、みたいな内容なのかなと想像します。

alopecia

昨日から米アカデミー賞の発表と授賞式が話題です。

日本人監督の映画「ドライブ・マイ・カー」の国際長編賞の受賞がひとつ、もうひとつはアメリカ人俳優が妻を揶揄されたことに腹を立て、壇上で相手を平手打ちした騒動です。

平手打ちの瞬間を撮影した写真と共に、邦紙朝刊でも報道されていましたが、俳優の妻のヘアスタイルを揶揄する発言がきっかけであったようです。

具体的にどういう発言だったのか、その内容の何が問題なのか、について、USA Today紙の記事が参考になります。

Chris Rock's "joke" about Jada Pinkett Smith's hair hit different – and not in a good way.

The actress turned heads and garnered praise for her radiant Oscars look Sunday night, which featured an elaborate emerald gown and a shaved head.

Rock, however, used her lack of hair as the butt of a joke while onstage presenting the award for best documentary feature. The comedian said he couldn't wait to see Smith star in "G.I. Jane 2," referencing her shaved head.

Last summer, Pinkett Smith spoke about her journey with alopecia and severe hair loss, and revealed her daughter Willow Smith was the inspiration for her bold hair transformation.

Alopecia is a medical term for hair loss, which can include everything from common balding on the head to hair loss on the body and more, according to the Mayo Clinic.

心無いコメントの対象になった女優のJada Pinkett Smithさんは脱毛症（alopecia）に悩まされていたそうです。

病気に苦悩に思い遣りを寄せるどころか、それを揶揄するような発言は冗談で済まされる話では無い、ということです。また、女優である当人はヘアスタイルには特別な文化的背景や思い入れを持つ黒人であるところ、同じ黒人のコメディアンが今回のような失言を犯したことに関係者は衝撃を受けているということです。

"alopecia"は禿頭（とくとう）の意で、脱毛症を指す病名でもあります。

この単語はギリシャ語でキツネを意味するalopexに由来しますが、意外というか、キツネと何の関係が？と思われるでしょう。

ギリシャ語alopexが意味するキツネや他のイヌ科の動物は疥癬などの皮膚病を患う傾向があるそうで、alopexが変化したalopekiaは皮膚症状による脱毛を意味するようになったようです。後、ラテン語を通じて英語になり、"alopecia"という単語が定着しました。

airbrush

アメリカでトランスジェンダーの水泳選手が取り上げられている記事をここ数ヶ月間で何度か目にしました。

元は男性なのですが、性自認が女性ということで競技会では女子選手として参加しており、不公平であるとの批判を浴びています。

そして、最近の競技会では優勝。その報道で、メディアによる当該選手の写真が編集されているのではないかとの疑惑がもっぱらです。

An image of controversial transgender swimmer Lia Thomas that aired on The Today Show was manipulated to make her appear more feminine, experts said.

“The edited image has definitely undergone some sort of softening and smoothing effect,” Jonathan Gallegos, a former White House director of digital content for President Trump, told The Post. “It’s clear this job was not done by a professional. This level of skin smoothing is a hallmark sign of an amateur job.”

NBCニュースによる編集後と思われる写真は当該選手の表情、雰囲気がオリジナルの写真と比較するとかなり女性らしく見えるものです。

この編集について、記事中いくつかの表現が使われていますが、記事のタイトルでは、

airbrush

と表現されています。

エアブラシというのは絵画や模型製作で使う噴霧器のような道具で、圧縮した空気の力で対象に色を吹き付けて着色したり、ぼかしたりするものです。

この道具を用いることが即ち対象に手を加える行為、さらに修正、改竄という不名誉な意味合いで用いられるようになった経緯はよく分かりません。

American Heritage Dictionaryでは、以下4つの定義に見られるように、写真に限らず、文書等に対する改竄も含まれるようです。

a. To alter (an image, especially a photograph) by means of an airbrush or other technique in order to increase its attractiveness or conceal an unwanted part.

b. To alter or obscure (an unwanted part) in an image, especially by using an airbrush.

c. To alter (a report, for example) in order to conceal or obscure unpleasant details.

d. To obscure or delete (unpleasant details) in a report or other document.

いずれにしても、表に出したくないことを隠すのが目的という含意があるようです。

トランスジェンダーのスイマーについて、メディアは何を隠したかったのでしょうか。

Abigail Shrier, an author who has written critically on trans issues, accused the network of trying to “pull the wool over the eyes of the public” by pushing the misleading image.

“NBC is protecting a cheater by cheating. Doctoring photographs is a violation of everything journalism stands for,” she said.

男性が女性であると主張し、他の選手よりも有利な立場に立つことが問題視されている中、当該のトランスジェンダーの選手の男性的なものを隠すのが目的であったと思われても仕方がありません。

真実を報じるべきジャーナリズムとしての姿勢が問われているというところでしょうか。

サブスク ー subscription

アップル社がiPhoneの"subscription service"の導入を検討しているという記事を見かけました。

iPhoneの端末は他機種に比べて高額というイメージがあります。"subscription service"の中身が気になるところですが、"subscription"とは具体的に何を意味するのでしょうか。

Apple is preparing a hardware subscription service for iPhones that could launch as soon as the end of this year, Bloomberg reported Thursday.

The service would allow customers to buy an iPhone through monthly payments, similar to how users currently subscribe to iCloud, according to the report. Apple declined to comment.

引用した記事にもありますように、端末を購入するのに、（一括払いではなく）月次の分割払いで支払う（through monthly payments）ことであると解釈できます。

そうすると、"subscription"とは分割払いのことなのか、という疑問が。

"subscription"という名詞は、動詞の"subscribe"から来ており、そもそもは下に（sub-）書く（scribe）という意味です。書類の一番下に署名して、内容に同意する、というのが原義です。

これが転じて、商品やサービスを一定期間購入する（という契約に同意する）、という意味で使われるようになりました。

Merriam-Webster Dictionaryでは、

to enter one's name for a publication or service

to receive or have access to something (such as a periodical or service) as part of an arrangement to receive a certain number of regular deliveries or a certain period of continuous access especially by prepayment

と定義されています。

新聞や雑誌などの「定期購読」（予約購読）というのが代表的な"subscription service"ですが、最近では「サブスク」なるカタカナの日本語が浸透しており、飲食店のサービスや自家用車、衣料品までもが"subscription service"を導入して話題になっています。

これらは全て、あらかじめ料金を支払った上で、一定の期間サービス提供を受ける権利を得るというものです。

iPhoneの"subscription service"に関しては、端末代金の分割払いということではなく、端末を利用する権利を一定期間契約して、その料金を月次で払うというもののようです。

投資家の間では、"subscription service"の導入によりアップル社の収益構造が改善すると期待されているらしく、同社の株価が2%程度上がったそうです。

最後にどうでもいいような話です。

クラシックの定期演奏会のパンフレット（プログラム）を見ると、この「定期演奏会」を"subscription concert"と表記しているのをよく見かけます。昔から疑問でした。

"subscription"の意味するところから考えるならば、予め演奏会（複数回に渡る定期的なイベント）の代金を払い、全ての演奏会を聴きに行けるという趣旨だと考えるのが妥当でしょう。

しかしながら、多くの定期演奏会というのはそのうちの1回の演奏会のチケットを購入するもので、これは"subscription"とは言えない（つまり、"subscription concert"というのには無理がある）のではと思う次第です。（勿論、プロのオーケストラ演奏会などで、複数回の定期演奏会の"subscription service"というのも存在はしますが。）

因果応報 ー own medicine

ネコを飼っています。オスですが、気性が荒くなることがあり、噛まれたり、引っ掻かれることが度々あります。

アメリカライオン（cougar）もネコ科ではありますが、こちらは噛みつかれたらタダでは済まないように思われます。

元ヘビー級チャンピオンのマイク・タイソン氏はペットにしているそうですが、噛みつかれて数針を縫う怪我を負ったそうです。

マイク・タイソン氏と言えば、試合で相手選手の耳に噛み付いた事件が有名です。故に、

One lion gave Mike Tyson a taste of his own medicine.

ということなのですが、"taste of one’s own medicine"とは直訳すれば、己自身の薬の味、となり、この表現が意味するところは自分がやったのと同じやり口にしてやられる、同じ目にあう、というものです。

因果応報とでも訳すのが適当でしょうか。

私は飼い猫に噛まれるようなことをした訳でもなく、餌をやり、トイレを掃除して、と献身的に世話をしていますが、何故攻撃されるのか、不可解なところです。

もしかしたら子供の頃に猫をいじめたことでもあったのかなぁ、その因果かなぁ、などと思うこの頃です。

pump and dump

米・フロリダ州で、ガソリンスタンドの給油機に不正な装置を仕掛けてガソリンを盗んだ容疑で男らが逮捕されました。

決して許されることではありませんが、高騰するガソリン価格に耐えかねた上の実力行使かと思いました。（実際のところは、価格高騰に目を付けた悪巧みでした。）

It’s a pump-and-dumps scheme.

Four Florida men were busted for installing devices inside gas pumps that dropped prices down to nearly nothing — an alarming trend that officials said will only spread with fuel costs soaring.

The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services said the suspects installed sophisticated “pulsators” inside pumps that regulate price and fuel flow.

The devices sent per-gallon costs plunging down to just pennies and allowed pumpers to fill up almost for free.

一体どんな仕掛けをしたのか素人にはよく分からないのですが、給油の流量とそれに応じた価格を計算するのはポンプ部分にあるパルセーターという仕組みが関連しているらしく、そこに何らかの仕掛けを施して1ガロン当たりの価格をほとんどゼロに近い値段で盗み取っていたようです。

記事の冒頭では、

It’s a pump-and-dumps scheme.

と表現されていますが、"pump and dump"というのは、株価操作などのコンテクストで使われるスラングらしく、価格を吊り上げて（pump）、高値で売り抜ける（dump）不正売買を指すそうです。

逮捕された男らは自らがガソリンを安い価格で買いたかったというのではなく、大量に安い価格で買い付け、それを通常価格で売り、差益で私服を肥やすというものでした。

ガソリンスタンドを舞台にした事件なだけに、"pump"とはシャレでもあります。

allergy

3月も半ばに入って暖かい日が増えました。今日などは真冬のような気温ですが、三寒四温を繰り返しながら春は着実に進むのでしょう。

暖かくなるこの季節、困るのは花粉の飛散です。

気温上昇が始まると共に、小生の鼻もムズムズ、目も痒い、という始末。

最近の研究によると、花粉の飛散は年々早まり、終わりも遅くなっているのだそうです。

つまり、アレルギーに悩まされる期間が長くなっているというのですが、これには地球温暖化と関連があるという話です。

The seasonal sniffling and sneezing could last longer for allergy sufferers. A recent study published in the journal Nature Communications suggested that climate change will lengthen allergy season. 

Two scientists from the University of Michigan examined climate data and pollen data and found that pollen emissions later this century would likely start 10-40 days earlier in the spring and end up to 19 days later in the fall.

アレルギーという言葉はカタカナでも定着していますが、英単語の"allergy"は実のところ造語なんだそうです。（知りませんでした。）

オーストリアの小児科医であったClemens von Pirquet医師が20世紀初めに抗原となる物質に対する過敏反応を指す術語としてギリシャ語から作ったと言われています。

接頭辞allo-は、他の、異なる（other）という意で、-ergyは仕事（work）を意味するギリシャ語ergonから来ています。（エネルギーenergyに同じ。）

つまり、外部要因（抗原）によってもたらされる反応、ということです。

keep one’s card close

出口が見えないロシアとウクライナの戦争。日米欧による経済制裁は効果をもたらしているのかわかりませんが、親露的な姿勢を取っている中国が抜け穴になっているという指摘があります。

アメリカのバイデン大統領が中国の習近平主席と首脳会談を行いました。

バイデン氏は中国に対する制裁も辞さないという態度で臨んだようですが、会談の詳細は明らかにされていません。

The Biden administration provided few details about President Biden's nearly two-hour video call with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Friday following the talks, leaving more questions than answers about where things stand between the two nations amid rising tensions over China's cozy relationship with Russia.

The Biden administration said publicly leading up to the call that China would face "consequences" if it extends a lifeline to the Kremlin, but it has been careful not to utter the word "sanctions" or describe what those consequences might be.

引用記事の最後の部分で、

という箇所があります。

ここでの"hold its cards close"というのは恐らくトランプのゲームになぞらえて、自らのカード（手の内）を隠す、という意味だと想像がつくのですが、このフレーズを辞書に求めると、

hold one’s cards close to the chest

あるいは、

hold one’s cards close to the vest

というフレーズに行き当たります。（動詞はholdの他、keepの場合もあります。）

米中両首脳が会談内容を明らかにしないという話ですので、意味合いとしてはすんなり入ってきますが、"close"の意味合いが違うのではないかと気になりました。

つまり、"keep one’s cards close"においては、"close"の意味するところは「隠す」です。

一方、"keep one’s cards close to the chest"（あるいは、to the vest）における"close (to)"は「〜に近く、〜に密接して」という意味であると解釈されます。（カードを胸元に引き寄せて見えないように隠す、という結果では同じですが。）

Merriam-Webster Dictionaryでは"close to the vest"は以下のように定義されています。

close to the vest

in a reserved or cautious manner

She tends to keep her opinions close to the vest.

色々調べてみましたが、"keep one’s cards close"と"keep one’s cards close to the chest"というフレーズが異なるものという典拠はありませんでした。

ブックエンド ー bookend

スターバックスのCEOが退任するという記事からの引用です。 

Starbucks CEO Kevin Johnson is retiring after five years on the job.

Howard Schultz will return as interim CEO, once again taking the helm of the coffee chain he elevated to a global brand while the company searches for a long term successor. This will be his third tenure as Starbucks' chief executive.

CEO本人のコメントが引用されていますが、その中で、

I feel this is a natural bookend to my 13 years with the company

とある部分の、"bookend"という言葉遣いに注目したいと思います。

「ブックエンド」はご存知のように、本を立てておくのに用いられる支えの道具です。底面と直角をなす、板状の仕切りを思い浮かべますね。

コメントは自身のCEOとしてのキャリアに触れているものです。退任する訳ですから、一つの区切り、またお終い、ということでブック「エンド」は特に違和感もないところですが、単に"end"と言わず、敢えて"bookend"と言うのには、"bookend"がこのようなコンテクストでの典型的な言い回しとして定着しているのかと気になった次第です。

ところが、手元の英和辞書を引いてみたのですが、"bookend"のエントリには単に道具としてのブックエンドという意味が載っているだけで、その用法についてこれといった説明はありません。

それで、コーパスを使って"bookend"の用法を検索してみました。想定外なことに、正直に言って、思わぬ沼にハマってしまったような気がしています。

コーパスで見る用例の中には当然ながら道具としてのブックエンドもありますが、それ以上に今回取り上げたような比喩的な意味での用例が多数見られます。

いくつか拾ってみました。

Obama's speech is also a bookend to a more ambitious speech he delivered in Prague in 2009. Then, Obama said the United States would seek a new treaty that verifiably ends the production of fissile materials intended for use in state nuclear weapons.

この用例は核廃絶についてオバマ元大統領が行ったスピーチについての記事からですが、2015年のスピーチを、2009年のものと並べて、"bookend"と言っています。

Merriam-Webster Dictionaryによると、"bookend"の意味合いとして、

one of two usually similar things that begin and end something

という定義があり、"bookend"とは道具としてのブックエンドがそうであるように、それが支えている両端を指すものであることが分かります。両端で挟まれているのは時間軸であり、あるものの始まり（始端）から終わり（終端）という観点で捉えている訳です。

もう一つ。

He has been with CBS for the last 15 seasons, a strong bookend to his network broadcast career that began there in 1985. Then two years later he was lured to what is one of the biggest stages in the history of American sports television - ABC's "Monday Night Football."

この例はキャリアの話題で、最初の引用とコンテクスト的に近いものですが、転身や転職といった変化をキャリアの中で捉えた時、ひと区切りと認識できる一定期間のキャリアを"bookend"と捉えているようです。

枚挙に暇がないのですが、最後にもう一つ。

古い記事ですが、クリントン元大統領が中国のWTO加盟を推進する目的で提出した米中間の貿易正常化の法案が下院を通過したという記事からです。米中関係におけるクリントン元大統領の功績のひとつとされますが、様々な取り組みを行なってきたところ、下院通過というのがひとつの区切りとなったというのが、"bookend"の意味するところであろうと思われます。

こうして見てきたのですが、"bookend"が意味するところはコンテクストによって微妙にニュアンスが異なるようで、何と訳す？と言われると少し頭を抱えてしまいそうです。

そうした難しさもあって、英和辞書には載っていないのかも知れません。

長くなるのでこれくらいにしておきますが、"bookend"には動詞の用例もあり、物理的に両端を区切るものを指す意味で使われることもあります。それらについてはまたいずれ。

draw a line

スポーツ選手、音楽家、フィギュアスケーター、そしてバレリーナ・・・。

ロシアによるウクライナ侵攻は、各界で活躍する著名人のキャリアにも影を落としています。

ボリショイ劇場バレエ団のバレリーナでプリマを務めるスミルノワさんは、侵攻に反対して同劇団を退団するという選択をしました。同劇団ではバレエを続けることが出来なくなった、というのが正しいかも知れません。

The prima ballerina Olga Smirnova, one of Russia’s biggest dance stars, has quit the Bolshoi Ballet company in Moscow after denouncing the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

ウクライナ人の祖父を持つスミルノワさんにとって、ロシア軍の侵攻が始まって以降、耐えがたい状況が続いてきました。

"draw a line"とは線を引くという意味ですが、慣用句として、

という意味合いがあります。

つまり個人の中で、許容される限度として引かれる「一線」がここでのライン（a line）です。

スミルノワさんの場合、ロシアによる軍事侵攻は、彼女の中では一線を越える出来事であったということでしょう。

新型コロナウィルスがもたらしたパンデミックによる、個人消費や流通への打撃、原油価格高騰、加えて、ロシアによるウクライナ侵攻がもたらしている政情不安と世界経済への影響・・・。

様々な要因が重なって、我々一般消費者の懐具合にも直接的な影響が出始めていますが、その実感は？

今日は、"shrinkflation"という単語を目にしました。

John Catsimatidis, the billionaire owner and CEO of New York City supermarket chain Gristedes, urged Americans to "buy" now because food inflation will only get much worse.  

"I've seen price increases coming through for the month of March. I've seen them coming through April and May. Between price increases and shrinkflation -- where it used to be 32 ounces, now it's going to be 28 ounces – it's anywhere from a 12 to a 20% increase in food prices," Catsimatidis told Brian Kilmeade on "Fox & Friends," Tuesday.

アメリカ国内では今後益々のインフレが見込まれるということで、スーパーマーケットチェーンのCEO自らが、買えるものは今買っておくべき、などと発言しているようです。（買い占め行動を煽るのではないかと個人的に思うのですが。)

ここで"shrinkflation"という言葉が出てきます。何のことか、よく分からなかったところ、32オンス（900g）だったものが28オンス（650g）に、と続き、内容量の減少の話であることが分かります。

つまり、直接的に価格が上がるのではなく、商品の内容量が減ることで、実質的に高い買い物になる、ということです。

上昇する生産・物流コストにどのように対処するか、は製造業者の悩みの種です。価格に転嫁すれば消費者離れを引き起こします。よって、価格は据え置きでも、内容量を（消費者には分からないように）減らす、という残された手段に出ざるを得ない、というのです。

お分かりのように、"shrinkflation"は"shrink"（縮小する）と"inflation"（インフレ）を合成した、かばん語です。

Jane Campionさんという名前に聞き覚えはありました。

映画監督と知っていましたが、検索して代表作「ピアノレッスン」というタイトルを見て思い出しました。小生は大学生の時に劇場公開を観ました。

最近発表した作品で賞を受賞するなど、脚光を浴びているようです。

そのJane Campion氏について、記事では、

helmer

と表現していますが、この単語に映画監督の意味があるとは知りませんでした。

辞書を引いてみたのですが、手元にあるどの辞書にも載っていません。

唯一見つけたのが、Cambridge Dictionaryのオンライン版で、

a person who is in charge of a film and tells the actors how to play their parts

と定義されています。

そもそも"helm"とは舵柄（だへい）と呼ばれる、船を操縦するための装置です。

舵を取る、とは比喩的に集団の「指揮を取る」という意味でも用いられますので、"helmer"が映画監督を意味するのも納得ではあります。

アメリカ英語のインフォーマルな用法らしいですが、コーパスでも実例は見当たりませんでした。

decal

「デカール」って何のことかご存知でしょうか？

プラモデル世代、などというものがあるのか知りませんが、子供の時、ガンダムのプラモデルが流行った私には懐かしい響きがあります。

デカールというのは、エンブレムやロゴなどのデザインが印刷されたシートなんですが、これをプラモデルの本体の指定位置に綺麗に貼り付けるのは子供には難しい作業でした。

シールみたいなものですが、デカールの場合は転写する仕組みになっています。

さて、ガソリン価格高騰に喘ぐアメリカで、バイデン大統領を揶揄する「デカール」が給油所に貼り付けられるケースが相次いでいるそうです。

スタンドの価格表示部分に貼り付けられたデカールには、ガソリン価格高騰はバイデン政権のせい、という嫌味が込められています。（ロシア問題と原油調達、ガソリン価格の高騰問題は政争の具と化しており、バイデン大統領に直接の責任があるか否かは難しいところです。先日の記事もご覧下さい。）

さて、「デカール」の英語は"decal"というスペルです。

実のところ、"decal"は、"decalcomania"という長い単語のスペルが短縮されたものです。

この単語はフランス語に由来しており、複写するという意味の動詞decalquerから来ています。ラテン語calcareは踏む、踏みつけるという意味の動詞で、踵を意味するcalxという名詞とも関連があります。（少し話が逸れるようですが、英語のinculcateやrecalcitrantといった単語もこれらラテン語のcalcare、calxに由来しています。）

では、後半部の接尾辞、-maniaとは？

日本語でもマニアと言えば何かに熱狂的に取り憑かれた状態を言いますが、デカールもそうした流行りがあったそうです。

デカールを発明したのはフランス人だそうですが、イギリスでその技術を確立、後にアメリカにも広まってかなりの人気を博したようです。

バイデン氏批判のデカールはアマゾンで注文できるそうですが、1日に80セットの注文が入ることもある、結構な人気商品（！？）だとか。

bat an eye

"bat an eye"という表現をご存知でしょうか？

ここでの"bat"は、目、まぶたを瞬かせる、という意味の動詞です。

"bat an eyelid"、"bat an eyelash"と表現されることもありますが、否定文で用いられ、眉ひとつ動かさないで、驚きもせず、動じず、という意味合いで用いられます。ある意味、強意表現といえます。

A man was spotted Tuesday night urinating on an F train passing through Brooklyn – while several straphangers didn’t even bat an eye.

またそれがほとんど常識になっているからか、浮浪者が車内で小便をしようと、乗客は気にも留めないというのには驚愕します。

夫婦喧嘩は犬も喰わぬ、と言いますが、30年間連れ添って口論ひとつしたことがないという非常に珍しいカップルを取り上げた記事を目にしました。

夫婦間のコミュニケーションを良好にする7つの秘訣が明かされています。

小生はなるほどとは思うものの、とても実行できそうにありません。

その秘訣については記事をお読み頂くとして、今日取り上げる表現に入りますと、記事の出だしにある、

With more than 30 years of marriage under their belt

という箇所です。

"under one’s belt"という慣用句を知らなかったのですが、Merriam-Webster Dictionaryによると、

in one's possession; as part of one's experience

とあります。30年という長い結婚生活を経験として、自らのものにしている、ということでしょう。

ところでこの慣用句には、

（飲食物などが）胃袋の中に入って（収まって）

（ランダムハウス英和辞書）

という意味でも用いられます。この意味合いは腹部を締め付けるベルトをイメージするとすんなり頭に入りますね。経験して、所有して、という意味合いよりも分かりやすく思います。

恐らくは胃袋に収まるという意味が先にあって、経験して、所有して、という意味合いは後から発展したのではないかと想像します。

食べて胃袋に収まったものはやがては消化されるもの。"under one’s belt"の所有する、経験する、という意味合いも単に所持している、持っているとか、体験した、というよりは、それらが糧になっている、十分に身についている、というようなところまでを含意しています。

記事のカップルの話に戻ると、ただただ結婚してから30年の歳月が過ぎたということではなく、お互いをよく理解し、その関係を唯一無二のものとしている、自分達の糧にしている、ということでしょう。

かく言う小生は今日もつまらないことで妻と口論したのでした。

David vs. Goliath

ロシアがウクライナに軍事侵攻して明日でちょうど2週間となりますが、プーチン大統領への批判は高まる一方、ゼレンスキー大統領は危機のリーダーとして評価を高めています。

メディアでは、両者をダビデ（David）とゴリアテ（Goliath）の対立になぞらえた論評がいくつか見られます。

ダビデとゴリアテの話は旧約聖書のサムエル記上に出てきます。

ペリシテ人のゴリアテは巨人で、その威容にイスラエルの民は恐れおののくばかりでしたが、そこに現れたダビデは体躯が劣るにも関わらず、石投げ紐とたった一つの石でゴリアテを倒します。

圧倒的な軍事力でキエフを攻めて立てるプーチン大統領をゴリアテに、軍事力で劣りながらウクライナ国民に勇気を与え、抵抗するゼレンスキー大統領をダビデになぞらえるのは妥当かもしれません。

ダビデとゴリアテの話を聞いたせいもあるでしょうが、プーチン氏の強面はゴリアテに、元俳優でまだ44歳と若いゼレンスキー氏は優しく、姿の美しい少年であると描かれるダビデに重なって見えます。

ゼレンスキー氏は攻め入るロシア軍にも怯まず、逃げも隠れもしないと、首都キエフに留まっています。

ロシアはこの戦争の勝利者たり得ないとの記事も見かけますが、ウクライナ国民の命がこれ以上犠牲にならないことを祈るばかりです。

drag one’s feet

ウクライナに軍事侵攻したロシアに対して、各国の制裁が日増しに厳しいものになっています。

一方、先日のブログ記事でも取り上げましたが、米国は原油等の禁輸措置には二の足を踏んでいるようです。

President Biden kept mulling a possible ban on Russian oil imports Monday as a bipartisan alliance in Congress moved to force his hand — while the White House argued the Keystone XL pipeline wasn’t needed to offset the effects of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

“No decision has been made at this point by the president about an import — a ban on importing oil from Russia,” White House press secretary Jen Psaki said during a briefing. “Those discussions are ongoing internally and also with our counterparts and partners in Europe and around the world.”

引用した記事のタイトルに着目したいと思いますが、

Biden drags feet on Russian oil ban

という部分の"drag (one’s) feet"とは、辞書を引くと、

（わざと）ぐずぐずする、のろのろやる；非協力的である；頑強に反抗する

（研究社新英和大辞典）

とありました。

文字通りには、足を引き摺る、という意味ですが、前進することに消極的、もしくは拒む、ということだと解釈されます。

冒頭では「二の足を踏んで」と書きました。この日本語表現にも消極さがほのめかされていますが、"drag (one’s) feet"の場合には「わざと」（故意に）という意味合いがあるようで、ニュアンスが違ってくるものと思われました。

手元にあるCollins Cobuild Dictionary of Idiomsによると、

If you say that someone is dragging their feet or dragging their heels on something, you are criticizing them for deliberately delaying making a decision about something that is important to you.

と解説されており、"deliberately"（意図的に）という含意がやはりあるようです。

ちなみに「二の足を踏む」の「二の足」とは、一歩目につづく第二歩目のことで、何かに取り組もうとして一歩は進んだものの、続く二歩目が続かないということで、足を引き摺るイメージにも重なる部分があるようには思えますが、それが故意であるかというと、どちらかと言えば、心理的な葛藤などを原因として、踏み出したくとも踏み出せない、そんなイメージではないでしょうか。

そうすると、バイデン大統領は原油の禁輸措置に二の足を踏んでいるというよりも、やはりそのような措置を取ることに頑なに抵抗している、という解釈がふさわしく思われます。

では、何故バイデン大統領は頑なに禁輸措置を取ることを拒んでいるのでしょうか？

記事にもありますが、その背景にはカナダと米国を繋ぐKeystone XLと呼ばれるパイプラインの建設を巡る是非があるようです。

このパイプラインを巡っては、環境活動家が反対運動を展開し、バイデン氏は建設をストップすることを大統領選の公約とした背景があります。

ロシアからの原油の禁輸措置は米国内のガソリン価格高騰に繋がる懸念がありますが、バイデン大統領はそれがパイプライン建設問題に飛び火することを恐れているものと思われます。ガソリン価格を安定させるためにパイプラインを認めることになれば、公約違反との突き上げを喰らうことは目に見えています。

ウクライナ問題が、全く次元の異なる米国内の環境問題（あるいは、野党共和党との政争の具と言っても良いでしょう）と絡み合っていると言えます。

hooliganism

「フーリガン」というカタカナをどこかで聞いたことがあるように思ったので検索したら、サッカーの試合で暴徒化する観客を指すのに使われるとあり、少し前のサッカーブームの時のことだったと思い出しました。

"hooliganism"という単語は、暴力団などのゴロツキを意味する"hooligan"から来ていますが、この"hooligan"は人の名前から来ているそうです。

アイルランド人一家の姓であるHouliham（辞書によっては、Hoolihan、もしくはPatrick Hooligan、とするものも）に因むそうなのですが、19世紀後半、ロンドンに住み、無法者の一家として知られたそうです。

Russia's "hooliganism" law could put the more than 13,000 anti-war protesters arrested throughout the country into jail for up to eight years.

The Criminal Code of the Russian Federation's section on "hooliganism" states that it is "is defined as grave violation of public order, which expresses open disrespect to society."

ロシアのウクライナ侵攻に対しては、ロシア国内でも批判が高まっており、ロシア国民による反戦デモにもなっていますが、ロシアの国内法には"hooliganism" を処罰する規定があり、逮捕されると最大8年の禁固刑となると言われています。

国家元首が"hooliganism" 以上のとんでもない行状に及んでいるところ、それに反発する国民を処罰するとは、悪法に違いありません。

不器用な人; ばか、でくのぼう

という意味です。

イディッシュ語で木の塊、角材を意味するklotsから来ているということです。ドイツ語Klotzにも、田舎者とか間抜けの意味があります。

ちなみに、英語のclot（塊、また、ばか、のろま、の意）も語源を同じくします。

word salad

ウクライナに軍事侵攻したロシアへの経済制裁の話題は昨日も取り上げましたが、アメリカは実のところ原油の輸入をロシアに頼っているという事情があります。

１日当たり60万バレルという量の原油の輸入について、ホワイトハウスはキッパリと止めるという姿勢を示していません。

バイデン大統領の一般教書演説の後行われたマスコミのインタビューで、カマラ・ハリス副大統領はホワイトハウスの立場を説明するのに苦しい弁明に終始したようです。

Several Twitter users mocked Harris' answer as a "word salad" that failed to explain why the White House hasn’t considered cutting off Russian oil imports.

苦しい弁明についての詳細は記事をお読み頂ければと思いますが、ニュースキャスターの質問は単純に、ロシアからの原油の輸入を止めるか否か、を聞いているのですが、ハリス氏は直接的な回答を避けて、日本の年寄り議員などに見られるような、いかにも回りくどい、状況説明的な回答に終始していました。

ハリス副大統領の弁明は"word salad"だ、という批判と嘲笑がSNSで起きているそうです。

"word salad"を辞書で引くと、精神医学の用語とあり、精神障害で思考が混乱し、単語の断片的な羅列が起きる状態（研究社新英和大辞典）を指すとあります。

勿論、ハリス副大統領は精神障害を患っているはずはなく（もしそうだとしたら職務遂行できません）、ここでは弁明の内容が支離滅裂だということを言っているものです。

Merriam-Webster Dictionaryでの、

a string of empty, incoherent, unintelligible, or nonsensical words or comments

という定義に見られるように、一般的なコンテクストでも用いられるようになったもので、特に政治家の空疎な、回りくどい発言を"word salad"というようになりました。

"salad"という単語自体、ごちゃ混ぜ、の意味があります。健康的な食べ物のサラダに失礼な気もしますが。

all bets are off

ロシアによるウクライナへの軍事侵攻に対し、欧米諸国を中心に制裁措置が取られています。我が国もロシアの金融資産の凍結を始め、金融面での制裁が発動したと報道されています。

こうした制裁措置は大統領のプーチン氏にとって痛手には違いありませんが、「仕返し」が懸念されています。

世界第2位の産油国であるロシアが、西側諸国に対する天然ガス、原油の供給を遮断するのではないかという懸念です。

記事のタイトルで、

という言い回しが使われていますが、これは慣用句で、Collins Cobuild Dictionary of Idiomsによると、

と解説されています。何が起きるか分からない状況、ということですね。

日本語では、

"bet"というのは賭けること、また賭け金ですが、物事の見込みとか可能性のことを言うのに使われます。

賭けるという行為自体がそうですが、ある見込み（結果）や可能性に期待しているところ、それらが外れてしまう状況、見込み違いになってしまう状況を"all bets are off"というのでしょう。

日欧米を始め西側諸国は金融、経済面での制裁がロシアにとって打撃になると踏んでいる訳ですが、天然ガス、原油の供給を脅かす対抗措置に出られると、制裁措置の効果という点では目論見が危うくなる訳です。

既にガソリン価格の高騰が懸念されており、日本でも中小企業の経営に与えるダメージが心配されています。

ところで、今日取り上げる単語自体は特に18禁でもないと思うのですが、"patootie"という見慣れない、ちょっと変わったスペルの単語です。

記事中、"patootie prophylactics"と出てきますが、"patootie"というのは"potato"が訛った（？）ものだそうで、アメリカ英語の俗語では尻を指し、また"sweet patootie"というと、若い魅力的な女性という意味だそうです。

アメリカ人には尻がジャガイモに見えるのでしょうか。

記事の話題に戻りますと、いかがわしく、またいささか不謹慎にも思われる新商品ではありますが、大真面目であることは、FDAの認可がちゃんとした臨床試験の結果に基づいているということからわかります。

臨床試験では、同性間性交をする男性のグループと、異性間性交をする男性のグループに分けられ、各グループ252名がコンドームを着用して耐久性を比較した結果、同性間性交グループにおけるコンドームの故障率が異性間性交の場合に比べて低いことが確認されたそうです。

このことが認可する上でどのような意味を持つのかよく分からないでいますが、既存製品は異性間性交を想定して製造されており、アナルセックスでの使用では故障率が高いという問題があったそうですが、そこをクリアした初めての製品という位置付けのようです。
