roofie

唐突ですが、"roofie"って何のことかご存知でしょうか？

下に引用する記事で初めて知ったのですが、"roofie"というのはロヒプノール（Rohypnol）という商標名で知られる睡眠導入剤（一般名flunitrazepam）を指すようです。

処方箋が必要な薬剤ですが、ドリンクに混入させ、それを飲んだ相手を前後不覚に陥らせて乱暴を働くなどする輩がおり、いわゆるデートレイプドラッグとも呼ばれているものです。

A new law will require many establishments that serve booze in California to provide drug test tools and post signage warning about drink spiking, starting July 1 this year.

The measure, AB1310, requires establishments with a Type 48 liquor license – granted to bars and nightclubs, without a requirement to serve food  – to offer patrons drug testing kits to test for common date-rape drugs, often referred to as ‘roofies,’ according to a press release. 

The required signage will include a message reading, “Don’t get roofied! Drink spiking drug test kits available here. Ask a staff member for details.”

カリフォルニア州では、バーなどにおいて"roofie"への注意喚起を掲示すること、また"roofie"を検出する検査キットを提供することなどを義務化する法律が制定されたそうです。

上述しましたように、"roofie"は薬剤の商標名Rohypnolが変化したものですが、引用記事中では、

Don’t get roofied!

のように、動詞化してもいます。

watering hole

会社の帰りにちょっと一杯引っかけて、ということがほとんど無くなりました。

パンデミックのせいで・・・、というのもあるんですが、外で飲むと最近はインフレもあって結構お金もかかるし、そもそも人付き合いも減ってきたということもあります。

外で飲むと言えば、居酒屋、呑み屋、バー、色々あるでしょうが、英語で、

watering hole

という表現があるのをご存知でしょうか？

"water(ing)"だと水ということになりますが、"watering hole"で出てくるのはもちろん水ではなくて、アルコールの類です。

A popular watering hole in England lost its “Pub of the Year” award after someone complained about a Nazi armband on display — although the item had been brought back by Allied soldiers celebrating victory in World War II, the owner said.

The Hole in the Wall in Bodmin had been named the best pub in the county by CAMRA Kernow, a local nonprofit, in part because of its peculiar ambience, according to Cornwall Live.

But the local joint, whose walls are lined with a stuffed lion, antique guns and a photo of Winston Churchill, lost the award after a complaint about the swastika armband, the outlet said.

"watering"には水を撒くとか、（動物などに）水をやる、という意味で使われるんですが、酒を提供するという意味になっているのは面白いですね。ビールを飲んで水分補給だと戯言を言うのに似ています。

また、"watering hole"であり、"watering hall"ではないことにも注目したいところです。

「ビアホール」は"beer hall"であって、"beer hole"ではありません。

"hole"は穴、くぼみやへこみのことですが、小さなむさ苦しい場所、狭い部屋、という意味があります。

"watering hole"が指すバーもビアホールのような広くて豪勢な場所というよりは、恐らくは数人も入れば一杯になるような狭いところを指していると思われます。

日本でいう、赤提灯をぶら下げた、こぢんまりした「呑み屋」みたいなイメージに近いかと。

drive stick

運転免許をお持ちの方ならば、クルマにはマニュアル式とオートマ（AT）の2種類があるというのはご存知でしょう。

以下に引用する記事は、スバル車をオイル交換に出したオーナーが、作業した整備工場を訴えたという話です。

Crandall Yopp Jr. is suing Dan Perkins Subaru of Milford, Connecticut. In a complaint filed on January 30th in New Haven, Connecticut, the suit alleges that after purchasing his new WRX from another local Subaru dealer in April 2023, Yoop took his WRX to Perkins Subaru for its second oil change in November 2023. He left the service department with strict instructions to not wash the car as he didn’t want the ceramic coating damaged. The oil change on the car was performed successfully and, perhaps to celebrate, the techs seem to have taken the car out for a joyride in order to learn how to drive a manual transmission.

託されたクルマを整備作業員が乗り回した上に故障させてしまったということでトラブルになっているというものです。

そのクルマはマニュアル車だったのですが、引用記事で、

the techs seem to have taken the car out for a joyride in order to learn how to drive a manual transmission

というくだりがあり、作業員がマニュアル車の運転に慣れていなかったと分かります。

ところで、記事のタイトル、リードには以下のようにあります。

The suit claims dealer technicians burned out the clutch, ground down the gears and then attempted to hide the damage

実はこの記事のタイトルの

drive stick

という部分で躓いたのですが、この表現を知りませんでした。

"drive (a) stick"というのはマニュアル車を運転する、という意味なのです。

"stick"は"stick shift"とも言い、ギアを変速するシフト（日本語だと「シフトレバー」などと言いますね）を指します。

小生の自家用車はオートマ車（AT）です。マニュアル車は絶滅危惧種になりつつあるところ、練習が必要ですね・・・。

carveout

フロリダ州で16歳以下の子供がSNSアカウントを持つ事を禁止する新法が可決されました。画期的な法制化だと思います。

デサンティス知事肝入りの政策のようですが、米国ではSNSの過剰な利用が原因で精神を病んだり、自殺する子供の数が増えていることなどが社会問題になっています。SNSでのやり取りを通じて未成年者を狙う犯罪も後を絶ちません。

来年2025年1月から施行されるという法律では、14歳未満のSNSアカウントは禁止され、15〜16歳では親の同意が必要になるとのことです。

特定のSNSを名指ししたものではないようですが、フェースブックやツイッターなどの大手は対応が求められるのは必至で、16歳以下の既存アカウントは停止しなければならないということになっています。

ところで、

The legislation also features carveouts for email and other messaging programs.

というくだりがあるのですが、ここでの"carveout"の意味が分かりませんでした。

実際のところ、辞書にも意味を載せているものが見当たらないのですが、他メディアの記事なども参照してみたところ、ここでの"carveout"は、

例外（exemption）

という意味で用いられてられいると分かりました。

"carve"には切り分ける、刻むという意味があります。故に経営の用語として、事業の切り出し（事業分割）という意味でも用いられるそうですが、法律のコンテクストでは法文、規定の内容における例外を指すのに用いられるようです。これもある意味、分ける（分けて考える）という事かと思います。

ということで、今回のフロリダ州の新法はSNSアカウントは禁止、但しメールやメッセージングアプリは例外的に許容される、ということになります。

米国の他の州が追随するのか、また他国や日本はどう対応するのか、個人的に関心があるところです。

stooge

今日の1語、"stooge"という単語ですが、その意味は、

手下、手先、操り人形

と辞書にあります。

ガンであることを公表した英王室のキャサリン妃に関しては様々な憶測が飛び交っていましたが、根拠の無い陰謀論の多くはロシアが関与しているという記事に出てきました。

いくつかの辞書で"stooge"を引いてみましたところ、語源不詳、となっていますが、"student"という単語が変化したという説について触れられています。

つまり「生徒」ということですが、"stooge"には喜劇などにおけるボケ役、引き立て役、という意味もあり、主役に対して一段低い立場にある、という意味合いのようです。

iPhoneやAndroidスマホの最新機種には詳しくありませんが、グーグルの廉価版スマホといわれるPixelはPixel 8が現時点の最新のようです。

それで次期バージョンのPixel 8aの登場が期待されている訳ですが、公式発表はまだのところ、関係者が最新バージョンの存在をうっかり認めてしまった、というのが引用した記事の内容です。

記事のタイトルに、

Google just let the Pixel 8a cat out of the bag

とあります。

ここで使われている、

let the cat out of the bag

というのは、うっかり秘密を漏らすという意味の慣用句です。

ランダムハウス英和辞書によれば、「昔、田舎の市場で猫を袋に入れて生まれたての小豚と偽って売っていたが、中を調べる者がいて秘密がばれてしまったことから」、という解説があります。

taoiseach

アイルランド首相が突然の辞任表明と報じられています。

Leo Varadkar is resigning as taoiseach (Irish prime minister) and Fine Gael leader after a turbulent number of weeks for his party. 

He says his decision to step down is for both "personal and political" reasons.

引用したのは（アイルランドのお隣）イギリスBBC Newsの報道ですが、

taoiseach

という見慣れない単語が使われています。

括弧書きで"Irish prime minister"とありますから、意味は分かります。他メディアも同様に"taoiseach"（大文字で始まるTaoiseachとしているものもあります）という単語を使っています。

英和辞書には載っていませんが、American Heritage DictionaryやMerriam-Webster Dictionaryは"taoiseach"を載せています。アイルランドにおける首相を意味する語で、アイルランド語（Irish Gaelic）で長（chief）、リーダーを意味する語に由来するとしています。

発音は少し変わっていて、カタカナにすると、ティーシャク、もしくはティーショク、のように聞こえます。

辞任表明したレオ・バラッカー首相はインド出身で、同性愛者であることを公表した初めての首相としても話題になりました。

先日米国ホワイトハウスを訪問したばかりとあって、サプライズ辞任となりました。

tip of the spear

アメリカにおいて、自動車の排気ガス規制に関する最終案が取りまとめられていると報じられています。

温室効果ガス削減策の一環として、ガソリン車から電気自動車への置き換えを推進していくというものですが、その目標は例えば2032年までにセダンやSUVの新車販売の7割近くを電気自動車とするといったアグレッシブなもののようです。

このような新しい規制について、引用した記事の冒頭では、

considered the tip of the spear in its efforts to electrify the transportation sector

と表現しています。

ここで使われている"tip of the spear"という表現は手元の英和辞書やイディオムの参考書に載っていないのですが、

a person or group of people that is the first to do something considered difficult or dangerous, especially a group of soldiers, etc. who are the first to enter a battle area

というような意味であると、Cambridge Dictionaryのサイトに説明があります。

"tip of the spear"とは直訳すれば槍の先端ということですが、その意味するところは戦さにおいて先陣を切って敵地に切り込んで行く兵、部隊であると言えます。

日本語でも一番槍とか先鋒などという表現がありますが、上記のCambridge Dictionaryの説明にもありますように、困難な課題や試みにおいて果敢に挑戦する最初の人を指すのに使われます。

ここでの困難な課題とは言うまでもなく地球温暖化であり、温室効果ガス削減ということですが、アグレッシブ過ぎる電気自動車導入目標はエネルギー産業や消費者を置き去りにしているとの批判もあり、結局はバイデン政権の選挙対策ではないかとの批判もあるようです。

bloodbath

トランプ元大統領の発言が物議を醸しています。

問題になったのは発言の中で出てきた"bloodbath"という単語。

トランプ氏は、自身が大統領に選出されずバイデン氏が勝つようなことがあれば、"bloodbath"になるだろう、と発言。

映像などを見た訳ではありませんが、議論が白熱して、同氏が激高している様子が想像されます。

Rep. Mike Turner said Sunday it was clear that former President Donald Trump’s reference to “a bloodbath” should he lose the November election pertained to the auto industry, not to a surge of political violence.

At a rally in Ohio on Saturday, Trump said, “Now, if I don’t get elected, it’s gonna be a bloodbath. That’s going to be the least of it. It’s going to be a bloodbath for the country.”

それにしても"bloodbath"とは穏やかではありません。血の海、血の池、大量の血を浴びるということです。辞書を引くと、最初に出てくる定義は、

大量殺人、大虐殺

です。

俺が負けたら支持者らの暴動が発生し、多数の死者が出るぞ、そんな風に聞こえても仕方ありません。2021年1月6日に発生したワシントン議事堂襲撃事件を彷彿とさせます。

民主党のペロシ議員らはトランプ氏の発言に強く反発し、11月の大統領選は絶対に負ける訳にはいかないとコメントしたということです。

ところが、引用記事にありますように、トランプ氏擁護の関係者らは、"bloodbath"という言葉はアメリカ自動車産業の保護というコンテクストで出てきたもので、その意味合いは経済の大不況というものである、と援護しています。

なるほど、American Heritage Dictionaryを引くと、

A situation, such as a stock market crash, in which many investors suffer great losses

という定義がみえますし、ランダムハウスにおいては従業員などの大量解雇という意味も載っています。

"bloodbath"という言葉が、著しい経済不況とか、市場の混乱による経済への大打撃、という意味合いで使われるというのは確かなようです。

トランプ氏の発言はアメリカの自動車産業を守るため、海外からの輸入車に100％の関税をかける、という主張を展開する中で飛び出してきたようですが、同氏の過激、苛烈な性格故、人の血が流されるというイメージが先行してしまうのも仕方ないのかもしれません。

token

ロシアで大統領選挙が行われていますが、現職のプーチン氏が圧倒的な勝利を収める模様だとメディア各社がトップで報じています。

Shortly after the last polls closed in Russia, early returns pointed to the conclusion everyone expected: that Putin would extend his nearly quarter-century rule for six more years. According to Russia’s Central Election Commission, he had some 87% of the vote with about 60% of precincts counted.

プーチン氏は9割に迫る得票率で勝利するとみられており、2000年5月の就任以来、四半世紀にも及ぼうかという独裁体制を築くことが確実です。

反体制派リーダーのナワリヌイ氏が刑務所で死に追いやられたというニュースが記憶に新しいところですが、ロシアという国では圧政に対する抵抗もやはり無力であると証明されたようなものです。

記事中、

とあります。

ここで"token"という表現が使われていますが、ここでは、

名目上の、名ばかりの

という形容詞の意味合いで使われています。

日本語でもカタカナで「トークン」といいますが、コイン（硬貨）の形をしたモノを思い浮かべるのではないでしょうか。辞書には代用硬貨と載っていますが、乗り物などの料金を支払った「証拠」として用いられるのが「トークン」で、"token"には象徴とかしるし、証拠（品）、といった意味がまずあります。

この"token"が形容詞として、

serving or intended to show absence of discrimination

done or given as a token especially in partial fulfillment of an obligation or engagement

(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

つまり、名目上、見かけ上（の目的で）、という意味を持つに至ったという訳ですが、その意味合いには多分にネガティヴなものがあります。

time-and-a-half

サラリーマンの多くは（と十把一絡げにすると非難されそうですが）週5日勤務、即ち週休2日、という勤務体系かと思います。これを週4日勤務、週休3日にするという案が近年日本でも検討されており、試験的に導入している企業もあるとか聞いた覚えがあります。

同じ構想は海外でもあるようで、ニューヨーク市では法制化が進められているという記事を読みました。

The four-day workweek is gaining momentum in Congress: Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., introduced legislation Wednesday that would reduce the standard workweek to 32 hours without a pay cut.

The act would shorten the standard workweek over four years by mandating that overtime pay kicks in after 32 hours worked in a week, down from the current 40. Those who work more than 8 hours in a day would get overtime pay at time-and-a-half, and those who work more than 12 hours in a day would be entitled to double their regular pay.

日本で議論されている週4日勤務では、1日減る分の労働をどう補うかという話、つまり残業が不可避になるとか、賃金を減らさざるを得ないとか、そんな話もあり、それならば今のままの週5日勤務のがマシ、というような議論にもなっていると聞きます。

が、米国NYCで進められている議論は違うようです。

お読みいただければ分かるように、賃金は変わらず、しかも8時間労働として4日間トータル32時間をキープする（但し、即座にというのではなく、4年間をかけて）というのです。さらに、

Those who work more than 8 hours in a day would get overtime pay at time-and-a-half

というのですから、労働者側は両手を挙げて賛同するのではないでしょうか。

数量の「〜倍」をいうのに、five times（5倍）やten times（10倍）と表現するのはご存知と思います。

"time-and-a-half"というのは1.5倍、即ち5割増、という意味です。

honey wagon

飛行機のトイレを利用したことがある人は直ぐに思い浮かぶと思いますが、地上のトイレと違い、水洗ではなく、結構大きな音を立てて吸引する仕組みになっています。

その仕組みについて取り上げた興味深い記事を読みました。

あの強力な吸引力は空高く飛行する航空機内部と外部の気圧差を利用したものだそうですが、上空で水洗というのは不都合があり使えないために考案された特許技術なのだそうです。

故に、離陸前や着陸時には機内のトイレは利用できないということになるのですが、そんなこと考えてみたこともなかったです。

ところで、トイレ利用後、結局のところ、アレはどうなるのか？という、これまた多くの人が関心を持っていると思われる話題では、以下のようなくだりがあります。

小生も漠然と高度何万フィートという上空だから、撒き散らしているのではなどと思っていましたが、そうではないそうです。

ちゃんと航空機前後部にタンクがあり、そこに溜め置かれるのです。

そして着陸後は、

honey wagon

に・・・、ということなのですが、この表現を知りませんでした。

"honey wagons"とはバキュームカー、すなわち屎尿運搬車を意味する単語なんですね。

なぜ、"honey"（ハチミツ）なんでしょう？

アレの色がハチミツの色に似ているからだそうです（笑）

この他、記事では、機内トイレがトラブったらどうなるか、高度何万フィートで撒き散らされるアレは氷点下の外気温でたちまち凝固し、業界では"blue ice"と呼ばれる、など興味深い内容です。

welfare check

航空機製造大手のボーイング社の杜撰な品質管理を内部告発した男性が不審死を遂げるという事件が大きく報じられています。

A former longtime Boeing employee who had raised serious concerns about the company’s production standards was found dead in Charleston, South Carolina, over the weekend, according to the Charleston County Coroner’s Office.

A news release from the Charleston County Coroner’s Office said John Barnett, 62, died on March 9, from “what appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.” The city’s police department says detectives are investigating the case and “awaiting the formal cause of death, along with any additional findings that might shed further light on the circumstances surrounding the death of Mr. Barnett.”

ボーイング社の品質管理部門で30年以上に渡る勤務した男性は近く証言台に立つ予定だったそうですが、駐車場の車の中で死亡しているのが発見されたということです。拳銃による自殺と見られるということですが、その理由が見当たらず、当然怪しいということになります。

男性の死亡が確認されるに至った経緯について、以下のくだりがあります。

A police incident report says officers were dispatched to conduct a welfare check at a Holiday Inn in Charleston shortly before 10:20 am on Saturday. When they arrived, responding officers found Barnett in the driver’s seat of a truck in the parking lot, with a gunshot wound to the head. He was holding a handgun. Barnett was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

ここで引っ掛かったのが、

welfare check

という言葉です。

"welfare"という単語を福祉、厚生といった日本語で暗記しています。この日本語が邪魔をするのか、どうもコンテクストに照らしてしっくりと来ません。また、この"welfare check"なる表現は英和辞書に載っていないようです。

ここでは、"welfare check"を警察が行なった（conduct）、とあります。"dispatched"ともありますから、警察は要請を受けて"welfare check"のために男性の元に駆けつけ、その死亡を確認するに至った、と解釈することができます。

そうすると、"welfare check"に意味するところはいわゆる安否確認、生存確認のことであろうと思われます。

ネットを検索してみると、"welfare check"は"wellness check"とも言うらしく、

A welfare check, also known as a wellness check, is when police stop by a person’s home to make sure they are okay. Requests for welfare checks are made by friends, family, and neighbors, typically after someone unexpectedly stops answer their phone or getting in touch with others.

との解説があり、やはり動静が不安視される人の安否確認を意味するようです。

報道によれば、"Rob"という人物から、男性の"welfare check"を要請する電話が警察にあった、ということで、男性の安否を気にかけていた人がいたことが分かっています。

kill notice

英王室が報道機関にリリースした写真に改竄の疑いがあるとして、APやロイターを始めとする報道各社は写真の配信を取り消しすると発表しました。

写真はイギリスのMother‘s Dayに合わせて、キャサリン妃を囲む3人のお子様を写した微笑ましいものですが、英王室から公式にリリースされた写真に改竄の疑惑が持たれ、そして報道機関によって取り消されるというのは極めて異例ではないでしょうか。

キャサリン妃は昨年末より動静が不明であったところ、今年1月に腹部の外科手術を公表という経緯があり、SNSを始めとしてネット上であらぬ噂などを呼んでいました。

といった表現を使っているのですが、APやロイターによる配信取り消しの公式発表は、

となっており、これらは"kill notice(s)"と呼ばれています。

"kill"（殺す）とは随分と物騒な言い方ですが、動詞の"kill"には、

（記事、文章などを）没にする、削る

という意味があるんですね。これは知りませんでした。

問題となった写真をメディアがリリースした直後から、ネット上では不自然な箇所が複数指摘され、合成したのでは無いかという疑惑を生み、却ってキャサリン妃と王室に対する憶測を掻き立てるような結果になったようです。

キャサリン妃は自身がPhotoshopを使って写真を編集したことを認めましたが、どのような編集を行ったのか、またそれが何のためだったのかは分かっていません。

言われてみれば確かに不自然と思われる箇所はあるのですが・・・。

写真に詳しくない小生にはよく分からないというのが正直な感想ですが、報道各社が今回出した"kill notices"という表現は学びでした。

white flag

ロシアの侵攻を受け抗戦しているウクライナに対して、降伏すべきという趣旨の発言をしたローマ法皇に国際社会が一斉に反応しました。

ROME (AP) — Pope Francis said in an interview that Ukraine, facing a possible defeat, should have the courage to negotiate an end to the war with Russia and not be ashamed to sit at the same table to carry out peace talks.

The pope made his appeal during an interview recorded last month with Swiss broadcaster RSI, which was partially released on Saturday.

ローマ法皇の発言は、

というもので、"white flag"、即ち「白旗」を揚げる勇気をウクライナは持つべきだ、ということのようです。

日本語においても白旗、"white flag"、は停戦や降伏の意思を現す表現として定着しています。

ローマ法皇の真意はウクライナに対して停戦交渉のテーブルへ着くよう呼び掛けたものとも思われますが、侵攻をやめるべきはロシアであるとの批判が西側諸国から出ています。

"white flag"はハーグ条約においても停戦の意思表示として定義されていますがその起源は古く、ウィキペディアによれば漢の時代（25〜220年）に遡るそうです。

インフレにより色んなモノやサービスの値段が上がっていることは周知の事実ですが、特にアメリカ国内におけるカフェやレストランの食事代は異常といわれるのもむべなるかな。

そんな価格がまかり通るのか、と怒りのSNS投稿が拡散したようです。

ここで出てくるのが、

highway robbery

という表現なんですが、文字通りの意味はハイウェイでの強盗、追い剥ぎ、ということになりますが、まるで強盗のように法外な値段をふっかけること、即ち、

ぼったくり

という意味で用いられる表現です。

enshrine

女性の中絶の権利を巡っては、米国においては国を二分する問題となっていますが、フランスにおいては、中絶の権利が憲法で認められることになったと先日報じられました。

そして、このタイトル、また記事中で使われている、

という動詞を取り上げたいと思います。

単語のスペルからお分かりのように、"shrine"、即ち神社という単語に接頭辞en-が付いたものとなっており、動詞としての意味は、

宮に納める、祭る

というものです。

が、ここでの意味合いは、

明文化する、明記する

というものであり、国内でも、女性の中絶の権利が世界で初めて憲法に明文化された、と報道されています。

研究社新英和大辞典はこのような意味を載せていませんが、ランダムハウス英和辞書には載っていました。

ところで、"shrine"という単語はラテン語scriniumに遡るとされ、その意味は文庫、本や書類を入れる箱、というものです。

そこから、"shrine"とは聖人などの遺物、また遺骨などを大切に保管する場所、つまり聖廟や神社を指す言葉になったとされます。

さて、"enshrine"という動詞に戻りますと、やはり"shrine"ですから、聖なるものとして厳かに取り扱うというニュアンスがあるかと思います。

憲法の内容を軽々しく変更したりはしませんから、"enshrine"（明文化）される対象にはそれなりの重みがあることが前提となっていると思われます。

コーパスで検索してみると、

苦痛を与える、心をうづかせる、苛む、という意味なのですが、この単語の語源には興味深いものがあります。

スペルはRで始まりますが、遡るとラテン語dracunculusに辿り着き、これは小さな蛇という意味だそうです。

ラテン語dracoが蛇、または竜（dragon）を意味するのですが、小さな蛇（あるいは竜）が人を憤慨させる、苦痛を与える、という意味になるのは不思議ですね。

ここに語源の妙味と言いますか、面白さがあるんですが、小さな蛇というのはそれこそ蛇に噛まれてできた傷、また化膿したり腫れたりした部分を言ったものなんだそうです。ミミズ腫れのようになった傷から小さな蛇の姿を連想したものとか。

そこから動詞rankleは、化膿した傷のように苦痛を与える、うづくような不快を与える、という意味になったということです。

そう言えば今年は辰年でしたね。

myopia

スマホを始めとする、デジタル端末の使用時間が増えるに従い、目の不調に悩まされる若者の数も急増しているとの記事を読みました。

自然光によらず、デジタル端末の人工的な光源に長時間晒されることが近視を始めとする様々な目の不調を引き起こしているものですが、失明にもつながりかねないと専門医は警鐘を鳴らしています。

口語で"near-sightedness"とも言いますが、医学用語としては"myopia"が用いられます。

"myopia"の語源に着目してみましょう。

まず、-opiaという部分はギリシャ語で眼を意味するopsに由来します。そして、myo-という部分ですが、これは同じくギリシャ語mueinから来ており、閉じる（to close）という意味なのだそうです。

つまり眼を閉じる、眼をしばたかせる、というのが原義なのですが、これは近視の人が対象をよく見ようとして眼を細める様子を指しているそうです。近視、"myopia"については紀元前、アリストテレスの時代から、近視の人は対象物が像を結ぶようにするため眼を細めるということが知られていたそうです。

myo-という接頭辞には筋肉の意味が思い出されるのですが（例えば、心筋を意味するmyocardiaや、筋肉の障害を指すmyopathy）、"myopia"においては異なる語源であるというのは改めて確認したというところです。

surgical

アップルのスマホ、PCを使うならば否応無く利用することになるiCloudストレージは他のクラウドストレージサービスの参入を不当に阻んでいるとして、集団訴訟が提起されているという記事を読みました。

"surgery"は外科手術のことで、"surgical"はその形容詞形であることは言わずもがなです。

しかし、集団訴訟が提起する、iCloudサービスの独占を可能にしているアップル製品の"surgical restraint"、とは一体どういう意味でしょうか？

外科手術的な制約（事項）？とは分かったような、分からないような・・・。

記事で引用符付きで用いられていることから、通常の意味では無さそうです。

訴訟文書が公表されていますが、"surgical"が使われている箇所は以下の通りです。

"surgical"の意味を改めて英和辞書で確認してみたのですが、それらしき用法は見つからなかったところ、Merriam-Webster Dictionaryには以下のような定義がありました。

characteristic of or resembling surgery or a surgeon especially in control or incisiveness

ここで言わんとしているのは、外科手術、また外科医に見られるような高い技術、正確性を持った、また特徴とした、ということであると思われます。

即ち、アップル社が自社のクラウドストレージに誘導すべく、非常に精緻なやり方でデバイスを設計した、ということなのでしょう。

このような"surgical"の用法について初めて知りました。

以下はコーパスから拾った用例ですが、軍事技術のコンテクストで用いられるようです。

これらの用例に見られる"surgical bombing campaign"、また"surgical military strike"とは、敵地において攻撃対象となる施設等に対して行うピンポイントでの攻撃を意味し、故に正確無比な高い技術、コントロールが要求されるものです。

こうぢて見てみると、アップルによる"surgical technological restraints"も何となくその意味するところが見えてきますが、さて何と訳したものでしょうか？

clap-back

一昨日の投稿で、Wendy’sが混雑時間帯の価格を上げる"surge pricing"を導入予定という記事を取り上げましたが、これに対し、競合するハンバーガーチェーンのBurger Kingが早速反応したようです。

Burger Kingは、お腹を空かせているお客さんに追加料金を払わせるなんて考えられない、とSNSに投稿し、Wendy’sの"surge pricing"導入を暗に非難、さらにはハンバーガーの無償提供（一定額購入客が対象）を行うとも発表しました。

という表現が使われているのですが、初めて見ました。英和辞書にエントリが見当たりませんが、Merriam-Webster Dictionaryでは、アメリカ英語のインフォーマルな表現ということで、

: a quick, sharp, and effective response to criticism

と定義されています。

日本語にすると、非難に対する応酬、しっぺ返し、といったところでしょうか。

今回の件で言えば、Burger Kingは非難された訳ではなく、Wendy’sの値上げ構想とそれに対する顧客の反応（その多くがWendy’sに批判的であることは言うまでもありません）を好機と見て自社ブランドの認知向上の一手を打ったというところです。この一手は当意即妙と言って良いでしょう。

"clap"は手を叩く、強く打つ、という意味ですが、Burger KingのSNS投稿、つまり"clap-back"を受けて、Wendy’sはそもそも価格吊り上げの意図は無かったとの苦しい釈明に追われているようです。
