sew up last stitches

Hayley Jones, director of social at PR and digital agency the PHA Group, told MailOnline that the launch of Threads could 'sew up the final stitches in Twitter's demise.'

She said: 'Already, the app has surpassed 10 million sign-ups within hours of launch. The app is connected to users' Instagram accounts and can port all the information from their existing profile onto their Threads profile. This ease of use will pay dividends when battling Twitter for user share.

'The launch of Threads has been timed perfectly with the ongoing turbulence at Twitter HQ this week around viewing limits and begs the question – could this be the decline of legacy social platforms?
(Threads could 'sew up the final stitches in Twitter's demise'. The Daily Mail. July 6, 2023.)

the launch of Threads could 'sew up the final stitches in Twitter's demise.'

sew up(縫う)
stitch(一針、一縫い)

odometer

Thousands of second-hand car owners have found out their vehicles are worth a whole lot less than they paid for after discovering through a new online odometer check their speedos have been tampered with.

When Amy Barnwell handed over more than $10,000 for Nissan X-Trail, she expected it to at least start, but now she's "heartbroken, angry" and "just really frustrated" after finding out her odometer had been tampered with.

She'd barely made it home when she realised she'd bought a lemon.
(Dimity Clancey. Second-hand car sellers confronted over tampered odometers uncovered by new online tool. 9news. July 5, 2023.)

Orwellian

A federal judge in Louisiana ruled Tuesday that the Biden administration likely violated the First Amendment by censoring unfavorable views on social media over the course of the coronavirus pandemic, calling the efforts “Orwellian.”

U.S. District Court Judge Terry Doughty also issued a sweeping preliminary injunction barring numerous federal officials and agencies — including Surgeon General Vivek Murthy, Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre and all employees of the Justice Department and FBI — from having any contact with social media firms for the purpose of discouraging or removing First Amendment-protected speech.

“During the COVID-19 pandemic, a period perhaps best characterized by widespread doubt and uncertainty, the United States Government seems to have assumed a role similar to an Orwellian ‘Ministry of Truth,’” Doughty wrote in his 155-page opinion, which was released as most federal courts were closed for the Independence Day holiday.
(Judge limits Biden administration contact with social media firms. Politico. July 4, 2023.)

Orwellian

American Heritage Dictionary

Of, relating to, or evocative of the works of George Orwell, especially the satirical novel 1984, which depicts a futuristic totalitarian state.

score to settle

Why was Trump hoarding classified government documents?

What there is not, conspicuously, is a motive.

But what seems the most likely explanation is the simplest, stupidest, and most aggravating one: that Trump had no plan for the documents, except perhaps for use as souvenirs, trophies to be shown off, maybe as evidence for petty score-settling. That the documents that Trump smuggled out of the White House and squirreled away around Mar-a-Lago and Bedminster were not instruments in a coherent, well-formed plan, but instead mere ornaments to Trump’s ego.
(Moira Donegan. Why was Trump hoarding classified government documents? The Guardian. July 3, 2023.)

for use as souvenirs, trophies to be shown off, maybe as evidence for petty score-settling

pay one’s score

Chess(チェス)とCheckers(チェッカー)

Tesla delivered a record number of vehicles in the second quarter, as its strategy to cut prices drove a sharp increase in sales of its most popular electric vehicles.

“The price cuts [were] a smart poker move for Tesla and are paying major dividends in the field especially for the China market,” said Dan Ives, an analyst at Wedbush Securities. “Tesla continues to play chess while other electric vehicle players are playing checkers and this was another trophy case quarter for Musk and co.”

Tesla, which cut prices at the start of the year to boost demand, has set an ambitious target of increasing volumes by an average of 50% a year.
(Mark Sweney. Tesla delivers record number of cars as price cuts lift sales. The Guardian. July 3, 2023.)

Tesla continues to play chess while other electric vehicle players are playing checkers

X plays chess while Y plays checkers

When you're a drug dealer, you not only have to figure out how to do that, but you also have to figure out how to avoid getting shot by your competitors and how to avoid getting apprehended by the police. So it requires a level of, like, playing chess instead of checkers - thinking on multiple levels all the time and being extremely alert to everything around you that, I think, would serve a lot of these guys well in the business world.
(NPR, 2018)

In March, President Eisenhower founded NASA, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, a civilian agency devoted to space exploration. Spurred by what would soon become a wellworn phrase- "Soviet children are playing chess while American children are playing checkers" - politicians poured money into math and science education.
