今日取り上げるフレーズはちょっと長いですが、

know which side one’s bread is buttered on

というものです。

直訳すると、パンのどちら側にバターが塗ってあるか分かっている、ということになります。

何が言いたいのでしょうか？

昨日に引き続き、テキサス州で起きた銃乱射事件を受けたメディア論説記事から引用します。

The latest mass shooting at the Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas has once again elicited the “thoughts and prayers” from Congressional leaders in Washington, D.C. They are probably getting sick and tired of having to take time out of their busy schedules consolidating their power and financial gains to issue such boilerplate platitudes. After all, this was the 213th mass shooting in the first 144 days of 2022 in the USA (source: Gun Violence Archive).

The lobbyist loot that finds its way into their pockets via “campaign contributions” from firearms manufacturers and the National Rifle Association (NRA) compels them to avoid even attempting to pass legislation that might help alleviate this home-grown problem. They know which side their bread is buttered on and if it seems they value gun “rights” over human life, so be it. So far, luckily, it hasn’t been their children that have been slaughtered.

論説記事は、繰り返される銃乱射の悲劇にも関わらず米国内の銃規制が一向に変わらない現状を嘆き、その背景にあるのは銃器を製造、販売する側と、それらの利害関係者から献金を受ける政治家であると批判しています。

という部分の"they"は政治家を指しています。

手元にあるCollins Cobuild Dictionary of Idiomsによれば、このフレーズが意味するところは、

If you know which side your bread is buttered, you understand fully how you are likely to benefit from a situation, and you know what to do or who to please in order to put yourself in the best possible situation.

ということで、自らの利害に聡い、という意味です。

つまり、銃器製造メーカーなどから献金を受ける政治家らは銃規制を強化することなどあり得ない、なぜなら、そんなことをすれば自らの利害に関わってくることを知っているから、ということです。

ところで、パンのどちら側にバターが塗ってあるか、というのは面白い捉え方ではないでしょうか。

トーストの両面にバターを塗る人は例外として、普通は片方だけに塗るでしょう。塗った面を表にして食べますが、反対にしたらテーブルを汚してしまうかも知れませんし、うっかり膝にでも落としてしまったら汚れてしまって大変なことになります。

どちらにバターを塗っているかちゃんと意識して用心する、ということでしょうか。

欧米人にとって、パン（bread）は日本人にとってのお米と同じ、主食の位置付けですが、"bread"にまつわる英語表現も豊富です。新たに「パン」のラベルを追加しました。

no-brainer

今日取り上げたいと思っているのは、"no-brainer"という表現です。以前から気になっていたのですが、今朝読んだ記事で使われていたのでちょうど良いタイミングでした。

引用をどうぞ。

Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.) said on Sunday that raising the legal age for firearms purchases to 21 “is a no brainer” in the wake of the recent string of mass shootings in the U.S. 

During an appearance on ABC’s “This Week,” Kinzinger told moderator Jonathan Karl that raising the age to purchase firearms would be a good start, noting the alleged shooters in the massacres in Uvalde, Texas, Buffalo, New York and Parkland, Florida were all under the age of 21.

先週起きたテキサス州での銃乱射事件を受けて、銃規制に関する議論が高まってきています。

容疑者の18歳男性が「合法的に」ライフル銃を入手したとあって、果たして18歳に銃の所持を認めるというのは適正なのか、という議論になっているようです。

共和党議員は、銃規制の年齢を21歳に引き上げることは、

no-brainer

であると発言し、これが取り上げられています。

"no-brainer"は手元の研究社大英和には載っていませんでしたが、Merriam-Websterによりますと、

something that requires a minimum of thought

と定義されています。

考えることをほとんど必要としない事柄、と訳せますが、簡単なこと、という意味なのかな、と思いました。つまり、銃器購入の年齢制限を18歳から21歳に引き上げるのは簡単なことだ、またすぐにでも実行できることだ、と言いたいのだろうと思いました。

"no-brainer"という単語の初出は1950年代だそうです。

"no-brainer"の"brain"とは恐らく言うまでもなく脳（アタマ）のことでしょう。接尾辞-erがついているからには、また、no〜、というからには、"brain"を「アタマを使う」というような動詞として捉えているからでしょうが、"brain"にそのような動詞の意味はありません。

語源がよく分からない故に、"no-brainer"の含意するところもぼんやりしているように思われます。

いくつか用例を拾ってみました。

Elon Musk is trying to make it a no-brainer for you to move to Mars. Musk, the founder of SpaceX, shared his thinking on cost-effective space travel on Twitter over the weekend.

ここでの"no-brainer"が言わんとするところは、大事ではない簡単なこと、できて当たり前のようなレベルのもの、といった意味合いがあるように思われます。

One of the most stunning elements of the first iPhone, which turns 10 years old today, is that it jettisoned the idea of a physical keyboard in favor of a software one. The idea, in hindsight, feels like a no-brainer. この例においても、当たり前、言わずもがな、という感じが強くします。（実のところ、"no-brainer"が使われる文脈に"hindsight"（振り返ってみれば、後知恵では）という言葉が出てくる例がちらほら見られます。）

こちらは、文字通り、「アタマを使わなくとも」、悩まずとも思い付くような、特に苦心の必要も無い、というようなニュアンスです。

"no-brainer" passwordというのは、やはり何にも考えていない、セキュリティ意識のかけらも無いような単純なパスワードのことを言うのでしょう。

こうして見てみますと"no-brainer"の意味するところ、そのニュアンスはコンテクストによって微妙に違ってくるようです。

冒頭取り上げた議員の発言に戻りますと、規制年齢を引き上げることは"no-brainer"だ、と発言したそのニュアンスには、規制年齢引き上げが簡単である、すぐにでも実行できる、という実際的なステートメントであると解釈はできます。深読みすれば、それが誰でも思い付くようなレベルの対策であるけれども、（悲劇を防ぐという意味での）実効性があるかは疑問だ、というニュアンスを含んでいるのかも知れません。

"eulogizer in chief"

今年に入ってから果たして何件目でしょうか。銃社会アメリカでは銃乱射事件が絶えません。

今週火曜日、テキサス州の小学校で18歳の男が銃を乱射し、生徒19人を含む21人が犠牲になりました。

アジア外遊から戻ったばかりのバイデン大統領ですが、銃規制への対応の鈍さを批判されています。

In the roughly 48 hours since yet another mass shooting, President Joe Biden has deliberately tried to stay out of the legislative and political scrum.

He’s refused to chastise Republicans explicitly for standing in the way of passing new gun laws and has given no outward indication of a type of bill he’d like to see pushed. Instead, he’s allowed Senate Democrats to set the tone of the public debate while he offers comfort to the families of victims and explores his options.

The approach has left some in the advocacy world nervous and wondering why the most powerful man in the country isn’t adequately using the bully pulpit on such an emotionally wrought issue.

“He can’t just be the ‘eulogizer in chief.’ He also needs to put the full force of his office into the legislative process. Otherwise it will seem like he’s lost hope.” said Peter Ambler, executive director for the gun safety group Giffords. “I think he can have an impact if he and the whole White House swing into action.”

銃規制に関する法案については、具体的な進展が見られず、規制強化を訴える人たちから批判の声が挙がっている模様です。

バイデン大統領を指して、

"eulogizer in chief"

とのことですが、"eulogizer"とは何でしょうか？

以前、"eulogy"という単語を取り上げたことがありますが、"eulogy"というのは亡くなった人を悼むメッセージのことで、いわゆる弔辞のことです。

その"eulogy"が動詞化したものが"eulogize"、さらにその行為者ということで名詞化したのが"eulogizer"、と解釈されます。つまり、死者を悼むメッセージを読み上げる人、ということです。

"eulogizer in chief"の"in chief"は、"commander in chief"（最高司令官）や"editor in chief"（編集主幹）といった語に見られるように、役職名に使われる定型表現で、特に位の高い役職を指します。

敢えて言うまでもなく、"eulogizer in chief"などという役職は存在しません。皮肉を込めた表現だと言えるでしょう。

銃乱射事件が起きる度、死者を悼み、また被害者家族に寄り添い、犯人を、銃を憎む、といったメッセージを飽きるほど聞いてきた人々にしてみれば、具体的な施策（銃規制法案）がついてこないから悲劇が繰り返される、と言いたいところで、そんなフラストレーションが透けて見える言い草です。

この例のように、皮肉を込めて"〜in chief"を使った言い回しを目にすることはよくあります。

いくつかコーパスで拾ってみました。

いずれも米大統領に触れての表現であるのは興味深いところです。

上記の他、Authenticなソースではありませんが、

liar in chief

など、殆ど侮蔑そのものの用例も見られます。

proud as punch

オーストラリアで先週末に行われた国政選挙の結果、政権交代となりました。

政権与党であった保守は9年間に渡る政権を失い、モリソン首相が退陣、新しく左派労働党の党首アルバニージ氏が第31代首相に就任しました。

環境問題への政策が勝敗を分ける大きな潮目となったと報じられています。

一方、アルバニージ氏は自らの出自を、シングルマザーの息子と明かし、選挙戦中も大いにアピールしたそうです。

Albanese often refers to his background as the son of a single mother to demonstrate his commitment to making life better for struggling Australians.

His mother, Maryanne, suffered rheumatoid arthritis and lived on disability benefits while she raised him alone in council housing in the 1960s.

"It gave me a determination each and every day to help the people like I was growing up to have a better life. And I think that's what Australians want," he told the National Press Club in January.

Albanese repeatedly credited his mother for her strength during his campaign, most recently on Friday when he paid tribute to a "incredible woman."

"She'd be proud as punch because she made the courageous decision in 1963 to keep a child that she had out of wedlock," he said.

経済的に豊かとはおよそ言えない境遇でアルバニージ氏を育て上げ、首相にまで昇り詰めることが出来ることを証明したという訳です。

アルバニージ新首相が自身の母親について触れた発言が引用されています。その中に、

She'd be proud as punch 

と出てきます。

変わった表現だなぁと思いました。"proud"は敢えて説明の必要もないでしょうが、それを修飾する、"proud as punch"の"punch"とは何を指しているのでしょうか？

ボクシングの「パンチ」でしょうか？それとも、穴あけ機の「パンチ」、あるいは飲み物の「パンチ」？

興味深いことに、"proud as punch"はかつて、"proud as Punch"と書いていたそうで、大文字で始まる"Punch"は固有名詞、人の名前だそうです。

と言っても、実在した人物の名前ではなく、Punch and Judy showという操り人形劇の登場人物の名前です。

子供向けのPunch and Judy showに出てくるPunchはどちらかというと自惚れ屋で粗暴なところのあるキャラクターだそうですが、この操り人形劇は非常に人気を博したそうで、Punchのキャラクターに当てて、

pleased as Punch

という表現が流行したそうです。（Merriam-Webster オンラインの語源解説による。）

Punch and Judy showをネットで検索してみると、動画で見ることができます。軽妙な掛け合いの中、Punchはそれほどまでに"proud"か、と問われると、よく分からないというのが正直な感想です。

今日取り上げる表現、

put one’s money where one’s mouth is

ですが、己れの口のあるところにお金を置く（賭ける）、というのが直訳になろうかと思います。

この表現を知らなかったのですが、口（mouth）がここで指すのは、自身の信ずるところ、信条、といった意味合いで、そこに金を置く（賭ける）というのは、自らの信条に沿った行動を取る、という意味になります。（元々、ギャンブルのコンテクストでの言い草のようですが、自分が勝てると思えば、そこにお金を賭けるものだ、ということです。）

American Heritage Dictionaryではこの表現をスラングとした上で、

To live up to one's words; act according to one's own advice.

と定義しています。

パンデミックですっかり主流となったリモートワークの継続か、それともオフィス勤務への回帰か。労使の対立が取り上げられることが多くなりました。アップル社でのゴタゴタを取り上げた記事からの引用を読んでみましょう。

Throughout the pandemic, many workers have said they'd quit if employers forced them back to the office. In March, Robert Half, a global recruiting firm, released a survey that revealed 50% of US workers would rather resign than be forced back to the office full-time.

これまでの記事でも何度か触れたように、アップル社では週3日以上のオフィス勤務を義務付けており、反発する従業員が退職する動きも見られています。

そのような状況の中、機械学習分野の研究責任者であったIan Goodfellow氏が同社を退職して競合するグーグルに移籍したことが波紋を拡げました。

同氏自身、リモートワークの多大な恩恵を感じていたのでしょう、働き方の柔軟性を認めることが重要であると主張して憚らなかったようです。社の方針に反発して退社の道を選択したというのは、自らの信ずるところに正直であった、ということです。

口先だけではなく、という含意も感じられる表現です。

a haul

来日中のバイデン大統領ですが、記者会見でアメリカ経済の先行きについて問われ、コメントしました。

President Biden on Monday admitted that the United States’ economy has “problems” and that it will be “a haul” before Americans see total relief from inflation and soaring prices.

During a press conference in Japan following his meeting with Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, Biden insisted that he does not believe a recession is inevitable, pointing to key economic growth in the US compared to other countries. 

“Does that mean we don’t have problems? We do,” the president said. “We have problems but less consequential than the rest of the world has because of our internal growth and strength.”

On recovery, Biden said “this is going to be a haul. This is going to take some time.”

ガソリン価格の高騰や生活必需品のインフレに見舞われる米国内経済ですが、景気後退とまでは行かないものの、好ましくない状況であることは認めたということです。

そして、これらの問題から回復するには少し時間がかかるであろうとの見通しを述べた模様です。

大統領のコメントは、

it will be “a haul”

というものでしたが、この"a haul"の意味がピンときませんでした。

"haul"という動詞は、引っ張る、手繰る、という意味で、（貨物として）輸送するという意味もあります。

ゆえに、名詞としての意味も、運搬、輸送、またその距離や貨物の物量といった意味があります。

コンテクストからして、"it will be a haul"の言わんとするところは、（インフレ等の経済状況からの脱却には）道のり（距離）があり、また時間がかかるだろう、ということなのだと想像はつきます。

辞書を引いてみると、long haul（長い距離、long-hauler）、short haul（短い距離）などの表現があり、時間的な含意もあることが分かりますが、ここでは"a haul"であり、longともshortとも言っていません。

コーパスを検索してみますと、同様な用法がいくつか確認できます。

Lucky spectators who don't mind walking to the cargo area, quite a haul from the main terminal, may be able to glimpse some exotic beast.

"a haul"は特にlongであるとも言っていませんが、ある程度の距離があることを言っているもののようです。つまり、それなりの距離であり、「それなりに」時間がかかる、ということを示唆しているようです。

要は簡単ではない、というところでしょうか。

keep one’s arms around

欧米などで"monekypox"（サル痘）の症例が増加しているとニュースになっています。

More cases of a rare disease have been reported worldwide, including in the United States -- where one health official said he expects more cases in the days ahead.

As of Saturday, 92 confirmed cases and 28 suspected cases of monkeypox were under investigation in 12 countries, the World Health Organization said in a news release.

新型コロナの収束もままならない中、今度はサル痘か、と思わされます。サル痘については治療法も確立されており、ワクチンもあるため、感染拡大を食い止めることは可能と見られています。

引用した記事中に、米・ホワイトハウスのパンデミック対策班の担当者のコメントがありますが、

we're going to be able to keep our arms around it

とある部分に注目しましょう。

"keep our arms around"というフレーズの意味するところは、恐らくit（ここではサル痘）を抑え込む、というような意味合いだと思われます。

両腕を拡げて内側に囲い込むようなイメージでしょうか。恐らく慣用句の類だと思うのですが、"keep one’s arms around"という表現を取り上げている辞書は見当たりません。小生がよく参考にしているCollins Cobuild Dictionary of Idiomsにも載っていませんでした。

あまりメジャーではない表現なのかも知れません。

コーパスで確認できた用例を下記に挙げます。

de-Arching

マクドナルドがロシアからの撤退を正式に表明しました。

ソビエト時代に第一号店をオープンして30年以上、現時点では600店がロシア国内に存在するそうですが、全ての店舗を他の事業者に売却する方向だそうです。

McDonald's said Monday that it will sell its business in Russia, a little more than two months after it paused operations in the country due to its invasion of Ukraine.

マクドナルドによれば、撤退表明後、

"de-Arching"

というプロセスがスタートするのだそうです。

興味深い言葉遣いです。

"Arch"（アーチ）は弓形の形状を言いますが、マクドナルドのロゴのことで、同社ロゴは"the golden arch"とも呼ばれます。

"de-Arch"を解釈すれば、アーチをかけるという動詞に、分離・離脱を意味する接頭辞de-を付加したもので、アーチを外す、という意味になります。既存店舗を売却するにあたり、マクドナルドのロゴや店舗標識を取り除くことを言っています。

勿論、こんな単語は辞書に載っていません。

以下は、マクドナルド社のプレスリリースからの引用ですが、"de-Arching"という表現は同社が作った表現であることが分かります。

As part of McDonald’s decision to exit, the Company is pursuing the sale of its entire portfolio of McDonald’s restaurants in Russia to a local buyer. The Company intends to initiate the process of “de-Arching” those restaurants, which entails no longer using the McDonald’s name, logo, branding, and menu, though the Company will continue to retain its trademarks in Russia.

何かと発言が取り上げられるテスラCEOのイーロン・マスク氏ですが、今回はバイデン政権を批判とのことです。

記事の引用をどうぞ。

Tesla CEO Elon Musk, whose purchase of Twitter remains ongoing, slammed President Biden in a podcast interview Monday and warned that if the government continues printing money, inflation will get worse and the U.S. might follow the path of Venezuela.

米国内でインフレ傾向に歯止めがかからない状況を嘆いての現政権批判のようです。

バイデン大統領に対し、

something of an empty suit

と言っていますが、この"empty suit"という表現を知りませんでした。

"suit"は恐らく背広（スーツ）のことだと思いましたが、果たして、

格好ばかりで内容のない人

（ランダムハウス英和辞書）

ということでした。

Merriam-Websterによれば、

an ineffectual executive

という定義で、初出は1950年ということですから、比較的最近の言葉です。

身なりは立派なスーツで固めていても、実力が伴わないのは露見してしまう、といったところでしょうか。

up one’s game

アイルランドの格安航空会社Ryanairの社長が、航空機メーカーのボーイング社にご立腹のようです。

The CEO of Ryanair let loose a scathing, obscenity-laden attack on Boeing management Monday, saying company executives need either an immediate "reboot, or a boot up the a**."

O'Leary said Boeing makes great planes, but it might be time to change management.

"Either the existing management needs to up its game, or they need to change the existing management, would be our view of life," he said. "We're very happy to work with existing management but they need to bloody well improve on what they've been doing delivering to us over the last 12 months. ... We're a willing customer, but we're struggling with slow deliveries and an inability to do a deal on new aircraft despite the number of white tails they have sitting on the f***ing ground in Seattle."

ご立腹の度合いはコメントに散りばめられた口汚い表現が物語っています。それらの表現は大手メディアの規制に引っ掛かるのでしょうか、伏せ字にされています。

それらについてはいずれ取り上げるとして、今日は、

up one’s game

という表現に注目したいと思います。

Ryanairの社長が怒っているのは、注文した航空機の納入が遅れに遅れていることが原因だそうですが、ボーイング社の体制がなっていないと批判し、経営陣の一掃が必要とまで言っています。

というコンテクストのなかで、

Either the existing management needs to up its game, or they need to change the existing management

と出てくる訳ですが、"up one’s game"というフレーズがどのような意味なのかピンときませんでした。手元にある英和辞書、イディオムの参考書にも見当たりません。

"up one’s game"において、upは動詞で使われていることは明らかで、これは向上させるとか増やすという意味で用いられていると思われます。

一方、gameの解釈ですが、これは多数の意味合いがあるところ、テレビゲームとかスポーツの試合のことではなく、仕事、商売を指すと考えるのが妥当であろうと思われました。

つまり、ボーイング社に対し、経営陣を一掃するか、（納期が遅延するような体制、オペレーションを）大幅に改善するか、という要求です。

"up one’s game"という表現の意味合いをもう少し探るべく、用例をコーパスに求めてみました。

The company's changing focus opens up opportunities to millennials, those people ages 22 to 37 who might change their perception of GM from that of a stodgy carmaker bankrupt a few years ago to a technology company that offers some advantages over that of a start-up, Wayne State's Masters said. これらの用例から浮かんでくる訳語は、スキルアップ、自身の持つ能力や技術の底上げ、というような意味合いでしょうか。

枚挙に暇が無いのですが、"up one’s game"は主に口語表現として定着しているようですが、upは動詞として使われているところ、いくつかの用例では、step upであったり、ramp upであったりするようです。

想像ですが、元々は"step up one’s game"だったものが約まったのかも知れません。

play a long game

昨日の投稿では民主党のペロシ氏がトランプ前大統領を"creature"呼ばわりしたという記事を取り上げましたが、同じ記事でもうひとつ気になる表現がありました。

その表現というのが、"long game"というものです。一見スルーしてしまいそうですが、何と訳すのが適当でしょうか？

"So this is not about long game," she said. "We played a long game. We won Roe v. Wade a long time ago, we voted to protect it over time. We have elected a Democratic House of Representatives that is pro-choice. Again, you have the 60 vote thing in the Senate and lack of clarity on top – part of some of the Republicans who say they’re pro-choice and then voted against a woman's right to choose."

上記引用は、昨日の投稿で引用した記事に続く部分で、ペロシ氏の発言を引用したものです。

いきなり、"long game"と出てくると分かりにくいですが、実のところこのペロシ氏の発言はCNNのアンカーとのやり取りの一部であり、アンカーのDana Bash氏のコメントで"long game"という表現が出てくるので、それに応える形で出てきたものです。

CNNアンカーのDana Bash氏のコメントは、CNNのニュース映像で確認できます。以下、文字起こししてみました。（不正確な部分があるかも知れません。）

Many Democrats are angry, I know you are one of them... a lot of people in the grass roots are despondent of this draft ruling, one reason why they’re upset is because conservatives have played the long game here, you know this. They have said over and over for decades that this was their goal, to overturn Roe v. Wade, and that Democratic leaders should have seen this coming. I’m sure you’ve heard this, too.

お分かりのように、CNNアンカーは、

conservatives have played the long game here

と言っています。

"conservatives"（保守派）とありますが、つまりは共和党のことです。

"long game"とは、共和党がRoe v. Wade判決を覆すために周到な準備を行なってきた、ということを言っているものと思われます。

"long game"を辞書で引いてみましたが、しっくりとくる訳語は見当たりません。

ゴルフの用語として、打球の飛距離が勝敗を左右するようなゲームや局面のことを言うそうですが、小生はゴルフをやらないせいか、いまいちピンと来ません。（逆に、飛距離ではなく、パットなどの短い距離の打球が重要となるゲームは"short game"というそうです。）

また、Merriam-Websterオンラインでは投資のコンテクストで使われる表現として、以下のような解説がありました。将来の株価上昇を期待して株を買い付けることをlongと言うということです。理解が少し深まりました。

If an investor has a "long position," it means that they own or have accumulated securities, goods, or commodities in anticipation of a rise in prices. Such a person is sometimes referred to as a long.

Golfers will know long game as the term for the phase of golf in which placement of long shots, such as drives, is important.

longとshortの対比は明らかで、短期的な、目先の利益や短期的な成果を求めるのはshort、長期的な視野で臨む姿勢がlongである、と言えそうです。

添えられた例文がまた分かりやすいと思ったのですが、果実を得るために時間をかけて取り組むのが"playing a long game"である、と言えるかと思います。

CNNアンカーとペロシ氏のやり取りに話を戻します。

アンカーが、共和党はRoev. Wade判決を覆すべく何十年間にも渡って（したたかに）準備を進めてきた（play the long game）、それに対して民主党は何をしてきたのか、と暗に批判を込めたのに対し、ペロシ氏は民主党こそが1970年代にRoe判決で女性の妊娠中絶の権利を勝ち取り、"long game"をしてきたのだ、と返したという格好でしょうか。

米下院議長のペロシ氏が、トランプ前大統領を"creature"呼ばわりした、という記事を読みました。

きっかけは、このところ議論沸騰している妊娠中絶の是非を巡る論争で、連邦最高裁が女性の中絶の権利を認めたRoe v. Wade判決を見直すことについて言及した文書のリークについてでした。

CNNのニュース映像を見ましたが、今回のような事態が起きることを予想できたのでは、という民主党としての対応姿勢を尋ねるキャスターに対し、ペロシ氏は多少の苛立ちを見せながら

Who would ever suspected that a creature like Donald Trump would become president of the United States

と発言したものでした。

"creature"とは生き物のことですが、侮蔑の意味合いが込められていることは明らかです。

辞書を引くと、形容詞を伴って、愛情や同情を込めて用いられることはあるものの、軽蔑の対象に用いる表現です。

ここでは形容詞は使われていませんが、日本語の「奴」（やつ）という訳語が当てはまるかと。

トランプみたいな奴が大統領になるなんて想像できなかった、そんな感じでしょうか。

前大統領による最高裁判事の人選に問題があったという批判でもあります。

burn the midnight oil

ツイッター社の買収で話題のイーロン・マスク氏ですが、本業の電気自動車メーカーテスラCEOとして、中国人の勤勉さを賞賛、対してアメリカ人の怠惰を指摘したコメントが話題です。

Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, said he expects China to produce "some very strong companies" because of the country's workforce.

"There's just a lot of super-talented, hardworking people in China who strongly believe in manufacturing," Musk said in an interview with the Financial Times on Tuesday.

"They won't just be burning the midnight oil. They will be burning the 3 a.m. oil," he continued. "They won't even leave the factory type of thing, whereas in America people are trying to avoid going to work at all."

テスラの上海工場では先日生産ラインに問題が生じたそうですが、現地従業員の努力により回復したようです。

同氏の発言に出てくる、

burn the midnight oil

とは、夜遅くまで頑張って働く、勉強する、という意味の成句です。

オイルを燃料とするランプを灯していた時代の表現が残っているものです。

日本語だと、蛍雪（の功）という表現が近いですかね。

flashpoint

先日の投稿でも、妊娠中絶の権利を巡る歴史的な判決をひっくり返す可能性があるという文書がリークされた問題に関して取り上げましたが、その後、与党民主党を中心に中絶の権利を法制化する動きがありました。

しかしながら、同法案は上院で否決。中絶の権利を擁護する立場と反対する立場の対立は益々先鋭化しそうです。

US Senate Democrats have failed to pass a bill to make the right to abortion a federal law, as the nation's top court is poised to curtail it.

The move, meant to counter the Supreme Court's expected ruling that abortions can be banned, was seen as doomed from the start.

今日は"flashpoint"という表現を取り上げましょう。

と出てきます。

"flashpoint"とは物理化学の用語で引火点という意味です。ある問題を巡る対立が激しくなったり、議論が過激なものになってくる状況を指して、問題に火が付く、などと言いますね。

一触即発などとも言いますが、大きな変化をもたらしかねない状況、その転換点を指すのが"flashpoint"です。（偶然ですが、昨日取り上げた"tipping point"と意味合いが近いです。）

ということで、"flashpoint"になるのは、今回引用の記事で言えば、妊娠中絶という「問題」です。

tipping point

米・イリノイ州にあるLincoln Collegeが157年という長い歴史に幕を下ろすそうです。

記事見出しによりますと、ランサムウェアによる被害が原因で大学運営が立ち行かなくなったことが原因とあります。

サイバー攻撃が原因で大学が潰れるとは驚きを禁じ得ません。

Lincoln College says it will close this week in the wake of a ransomware attack that took months to resolve. While the impact of COVID-19 severely impacted activities such as recruitment and fundraising, the cyberattack seems to have been the tipping point for the Illinois institution.

記事本文、また他紙の報道も読んでみますと、パンデミックの影響で入学者数減少などによって経営が圧迫される要因があったところ、昨年12月に起きたランサムウェア被害が決定的な打撃を与えた模様です。

今日取り上げるのは、"tipping point"という表現なのですが、

the cyberattack seems to have been the tipping point for the Illinois institution

というくだりで用いられています。

上記では「決定的な打撃」と書きましたが、"tipping point"とは、

the critical point in a situation, process, or system beyond which a significant and often unstoppable effect or change takes place

(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

と定義され、物事の局面が変わるポイント、というような意味合いです。

"tip"という動詞は傾く、傾ぐ、ひっくり返る（返す）、という意味ですが、"tipping point"はある出来事が対象をひっくり返してしまうほどの影響力を及ぼす点、ということになります。

ところで、Merriam-Websterオンラインで定義をチェックしておりましたら、"tipping point"という表現の意外なルーツを解説しているものがありました。

それによりますと、1950年代に現れたこの表現は、米国社会において住民に占める黒人の割合が一定レベルを超えることを意味するのに使われたのが最初だそうです。

白人は生活圏に黒人の割合が増加することを忌避し、"tipping point"を超えると郊外へと居住地を移す"white flight"と呼ばれる現象が見られます。

人種差別的な背景を持った表現だとはつゆ知らず、ある意味で新しい発見でした。

impervious

ゴールデンウイーク明け、大方の予想通り、新型コロナウィルスの新規感染者数が増加に転じています。今後の行方が心配されます。

ところで、コロナウィルスに感染しない人というのもいる訳ですが、最近ではなぜ一部の人は感染を免れることができるのか、という関心が寄せられているそうです。

記事に出てくる米国人のように、感染者と生活を共にしながらも、感染を免れているという事例があり、世界各国の科学者はそのような事例に関心を寄せているという事です。

はっきりしたことは分からないようですが、コロナウィルスに関連する受容体が他の人に比べて少ない、また免疫系統が異なるといったことが考えられるそうです。

さて、今日の一語ですが、

why some people might be impervious to the coronavirus

というくだりにある、"impervious"です。

（液体などを）透過させない、不浸透性の、という意味の形容詞です。また、影響を受けない、無感覚の、鈍感な、という意味もあります。

記事では、コロナウィルスに影響を受けない、即ち感染しにくい、という意味合いで用いられています。

ほとんどの場合、前置詞toを取ります。

接頭辞im-は、否定の接頭辞です。-perviousの部分については、"pervious"という形容詞も英単語にあり、こちらは、透過させる、という意味です。

ラテン語perviusから来ている単語ですが、viaは道の意味であり、通過できる、というのが原義となっています。

小生も幸いなことに、家族も含めてコロナウィルスに感染していません。抗体検査等も行ったことはないので、感染しているけれども無症状、という可能性はあるかもしれませんが・・・。

hybristophilia

先日読んだニュース記事で印象に残っているのが、米アラバマ州の刑務所から連続殺人犯の受刑者が脱走したというニュースです。

しかも、脱走を手助けしたのが、同刑務所の女性看守らしいという話しであり、受刑者と女性看守の写真が並列されていました。

その後の報道によりますと、監視カメラの映像などから、女性看守が受刑者と共に逐電したことはほぼ間違いないようです。

(CNN) More than a week after an Alabama corrections officer disappeared with an inmate accused of murder, authorities say officer Vicky White, 56, and inmate Casey White, 38, may have had a romantic relationship.

女性看守はその働きぶりが信頼されていたそうで、故に関係者のショックは大きいものがあります。

ところが、看守が受刑者と親密な関係に陥ってしまうことは起き得ることで、歴史を振り返ると、事例に事欠かないそうです。

犯罪者に対し好意を抱く、このような心理について、"Bad Boy Syndrome"と言い、

という専門用語が存在するそうです。

初めて見る単語です。-philiaという接尾辞に愛好の意味があることは分かりましたが、"hybristophilia"自体は手元の辞書には載っていませんでした。

ネットで検索すると、ウィキペディア等において、「犯罪性愛」という和訳が見られます。

先に、接尾辞について触れましたが、前半のhybristo-が何を指すかというと、英語のhubris（傲慢、横柄、思い上がり）に相当するようです。

make hay of

女性の中絶を巡る問題はアメリカにおいては常に議論が絶えない、また政治問題と化したテーマですが、最近リークされた連邦最高裁判所の内部文書が論争に火に油を注いでいるような状況です。

大まかに言って、現政権である民主党は中絶を女性の権利として認める立場ですが、野党共和党は妊娠中絶に対して慎重な立場です。

リークされた内部文書というのは、女性の中絶を合衆国憲法で認められた権利であるとする、1973年の歴史的な判決（Roe v. Wade decisionと呼ばれています）について、見直しを示唆するもので、中絶賛成派と反対派の論争を再燃させているという訳です。

民主党側としては、中絶の権利を擁護すべく、法制化を急ぐ動きのようですが、共和党が立ちはだかります。

共和党のフィリバスター（妨害戦術）が想定されているからですが、

とあります。

ここでの、"make hay of…"というフレーズを取り上げたいと思います。

このフレーズを知らなかったのですが、辞書を引くと、

to make use of a situation or circumstance especially in order to gain an advantage

(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

とあり、置かれた状況を自らの有利になるように利用、活用する、という意味です。

つまり、民主党側は中絶の権利擁護の法案を通したいところ、それに反対し、妨害、決議遅延を試みる共和党を衆目に晒すことが自党に有利になる、と踏んでいるようです。特に、11月に予定されている中間選挙を意識してのことのようです。

ところで、"hay"は干し草のことですが、干し草を作る（make hay）ということが何故このような意味になるのでしょうか？

研究社の新英和大辞典によると、

Make hay while the sun shines.

という諺を参照せよ、とあります。

これは陽のあるうちに草を干せ、というもので、即ち、「好機を逃すな」、という意味です。

チャンスは逃すべきではありませんが、"make hay of〜"という表現は、状況を巧みに利用しようとする狡猾さみたいなものをほのめかす意味合いがあい、批判的なコンテクストで用いられることがあるそうです。（Collins Cobuild Dictionary of Idiomsの解説による。）

引用した記事は保守派とされるFox Newsのものであり、なるほどさもありなんと思わされます。

意味合いは異なりますが、干し草に関連する表現については、以前取り上げた、"haymaker"もどうぞ。

サイアク ー from hell

記事の引用からどうぞ。

"a family from hell"という表現を取り上げたいと思います。

"hell"とは地獄のこと、また口語では強意表現としても用いられますが、"from hell"は、

being the worst or most dreadful of its kind

(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

という意味なのだそうです。

つまり最悪、最凶（！？）の部類に入る、という意味です。記事の内容ですが、とんでもない家族が居たもんだ、というところでしょうか。

先行する名詞を、後に続く前置詞句で修飾するというパターンは珍しいのではないかと思います。

"from hell"は慣用的に用いられ、先行する名詞も様々で、多くの用例を確認することができます。典型的な用例としては、とんでもない経験をしたとか、酷い体験をしたというようなコンテクストで、話者の主観を表現するのに使われるようです。

Recently I returned from a trip by CTA bus that became the trip from hell. I boarded at 2600 East on a bus headed west to Ford City. After a few blocks, the driver informed us that he was going only as far as Wentworth. We had to get off near the CTA bus barn on 79th.

新型コロナの出口は見えてきているのでしょうか、今年のゴールデンウィークは3年ぶりに行動制限のない大型連休ということで行楽地などの混雑が報道されています。

連休明けの新規感染者数が注目されるところですが、感染者数の減少傾向が続くとすれば・・・、と思ったりします。

米国では最近、パンデミックは新局面に入った、また、終わりが見えてきたというような見方があるようです。

米国人の勤労者にとって最大の関心事は"Return to Office"（オフィス回帰）の行方です。

アップルでは週3日のオフィス勤務を義務とする方針が打ち出されており、従業員側は反発しています。

A group of Apple employees is demanding more flexibility from the tech giant ahead of its planned return to office work later this month. In an open letter, the group, calling itself Apple Together, said the company's plan for many employees to be in the office three fixed days a week offers "almost no flexibility at all" and could be damaging to diversity.

Apple Togetherという、従業員組合のような団体でしょうか、その声明に以下のような内容があります。

"The Hybrid Working Pilot is not an increase in flexibility, it is a smokescreen and often a step back in flexibility for many of our teams,"

会社側が推進するHybrid Working Pilotを批判して、"smokescreen"と言っています。

あまり見かけることのない単語かと思いますが、"smokescreen"とは字義通りには煙幕というもので、敵の目を眩ますためのもののことです。

そこから、

という意味、つまり、偽装とかカムフラージュという意味合いで使われるようになったものです。まやかし、と言っても良いかもしれません。

週3日のオフィス勤務を命じる代わりに、残る2日の裁量を従業員の裁量に委ねる経営側と、そのようなモデルをまやかしと批判する従業員側の溝は深そうです。

フレキシビリティーを重視する従業員の中には転職を決意する人も少なくないといいます。今後の展開が注目されるところです。

stick with

ギネスブックと言えば、色々な事を対象に世界一の記録を認定していますが、同一の会社に勤務する期間の長さが世界一と認定されたブラジル人男性がニュースになっています。

齢100歳となった男性の勤務歴は、15歳で勤め始めた時から一貫して変わらず、84年（と９日間）という世界最長記録として認定されたそうです。

There's finding a career and then there's finding a company you stick with for so long, it breaks a world record, as Walter Orthmann of Brazil broke the world record for longest tenure at the same company, all while turning 100-years-old.

さて、今日の一語。

同じ勤務先に奉公することを、

stick with

という動詞句で表現しています。貼り付けるもの、ステッカー（sticker）の動詞、stickです。

くっつく、引っ付く、つまり、離れない、という意味で、動詞句の"stick with"は目的語となる対象に対して忠実である、忠誠である、という意味があります。

なお、目的語が人の場合は、"stick by"になることが多いようです。

"stick to"となる場合もあります。意味合いは、諦めずやり通す、というようなものになります。

世界一の勤務記録を認定された男性は、明日を悲観せず、毎日やるべき事を着実にこなしてきた、とコメントしています。言うは易し、行うは難し、で、なかなかできることではありません。

小生はと言えば、これまでに2度ほど転職を経験しています。現在勤めている会社が最も長いですが、それでも勤続15年といったところです。

前の会社で海外勤務を経験させてもらいました。その際、米国人の上司に、Masahiroは会社のお蔭で公私に渡って得難い体験ができたのだから、この会社でずっと頑張らないと、と言われました。その時の言葉が、

You have to stick with the company.

というものでした。結局、帰国後1年後くらいに、大きな組織変更などもあって、私は転職してしまいました。件の上司に申し訳なく、詫びのメールを入れました。

不遜な部下だと思われたでしょうが、理解を示してくれ、新天地での活躍を祈念してくれました。その後、無沙汰をしていましたが、2年半程前だったか、偶々再会した当時の同僚から、その上司が他界したことを知りました。

爾来、アメリカに行く機会があればお墓に参りたいと思いながらも果たせていません。

"stick with"というフレーズを聞くと、そんなことを思い出します。

ferocity

ペロシ米下院議長がウクライナを訪問し、ゼレンスキー大統領と面談したと報じられています。

事前には公表されず、電撃訪問だったようです。同氏がウクライナを離れて隣国ポーランドに移動後になって明らかにされました。

WARSAW, Poland (AP) — A top-level U.S. congressional delegation led by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi praised the “ferocity” and resolve of Ukrainians face to face with their leader in a weekend visit to Kyiv undertaken in extraordinary secrecy.

APの記事の冒頭部分から引用しましたが、"ferocity"という単語に目が留まりました。と言いますのも、小生が知る"ferocity"の意味ではコンテクストにそぐわないように思われたからです。

この箇所を５回くらい読み直し、また"ferocity"は"ferocious"の名詞形だよな、などと改めて確認もしつつ、辞書を引いたりもしました。

冒頭部分を解釈しますと、ペロシ議長（以下、米議員のウクライナ訪問団）はウクライナ国民の"ferocity"を称賛した、ということになります。

果たして、"ferocity"は褒め言葉（！？）になるのでしょうか。

辞書で確認できる訳語は、

獰猛さ、凶（狂）暴性、野蛮さ、残忍さ

などです。

ロシア軍に対する非難の言葉にはなりそうですが・・・。正直なところ、誤植を疑いました。

ところで、記事を読み進めると、もう一箇所、"ferocity"が使われている箇所があります。

同行したコロラド州議員の発言中に出てきます。

“We have to make sure the Ukrainians have what they need to win,” he said. “What we have seen in the last two months is their ferocity, their intense pride, their ability to fight and their ability to win if they have the support to do so.”

やはり、"ferocity"はウクライナ国民のことを言っていることが確認できました。誤植ではないということになります。

議員の発言であることからでしょうか、あるいはやや特殊な言い回しであるからでしょうか、冒頭部分では引用符付きとなっている背景とも思われます。

念の為、ペロシ議員団のウクライナ訪問に関する他紙の報道もチェックしてみましたが、"ferocity"という表現が出てくるのはAPの記事（また、APを引用元としているもの）だけで、他では見当たりません。

ところが、APを引用元と明示している記事において、"ferocity"という単語を置き換えたものが見受けられます。

APの記事で、

praised the “ferocity” and resolve of Ukrainians

とある部分が、

praised the courage of the Ukrainian people

となっているのです。

これが何を意味するのか、確定的なことは言えませんが、"ferocity"という単語の意味合いがコンテクストに沿うものなのかという疑問があったのではないかと想像します。

"ferocity"と"courage"とでは、意味合いから受ける印象が180度違うといっても過言ではないかと。

改めて"ferocity"をいくつかの辞書で引きましたが、現代英語の用法として褒め言葉になるような意味合いは見当たりません。（尤も、私の調べ得る範囲の限りですので、ご存知の方はご教示下さい。）

語源を辿りますと、"ferocity"は"fierce"という単語と関連があることが分かります。

この"fierce"は野獣を意味するラテン語ferus、またそこから生まれた形容詞feroxに由来しています。このラテン語feroxには、凶暴なという意味と共に、大胆不敵な、勇敢な、という意味があるようです。（研究社羅和辞典）

また、手元にあるオックスフォード英英辞典では、"ferocity"を"fierceness"と定義しており、"fierce"にも獰猛なといった意味はありますが、感情・行動の激しさ、熱心さ（intensity）という意味合いもあり、"ferocious"と比べると中立的です。

当の議員が"ferocity"という表現を使ったのは、恐らくは"courage"と同義、またはウクライナ国民の強さに共感してのことに違いないとは思いますが、興味深い表現だと思いました。
