トランク ー boot

同じ英語とは言っても、イギリス英語とアメリカ英語では違う単語（表現）を使うものがあります。

今日取り上げる"boot"はその一つです。

アメリカ英語では"trunk"と呼ぶものを、イギリス英語では"boot"と呼ぶというのは知りませんでした。

A family taking off on a road trip have seen their holiday plans hit a slight speed bump after they were pulled over by police.

The family was travelling along a major British motorway in their VW Arteon when police pulled them over and made a surprise discovery in the back of the car.

Seven people were travelling in the vehicle, according to Manchester's North West Motorway Police. The problem? The VW sedan is only a five seater, with two extra youngsters found lying in the boot while the car travelled at high speeds.

5人乗り自家用車に7人が乗っていたということですが、2人はトランク、つまり車両後部の荷室にいるのを警察官が発見したというものです。

日本語でもカタカナで「トランク」ですから、"boot"と言われてもすぐにはピンと来ませんね。

"boot"と"trunk"、どちらも同じく自動車の荷室を指しますが、歴史的には"boot"の方が古く、乗合馬車（stagecoach）の時代から使われているものだそうです。

ex

国内でも報道されていますからご存知の方も多いと思いますが、ツイッターは"X"（エックス）と改名しました。

青い鳥のアイコンで親しまれてきたブランドを捨ててモノトーン（しかもアルファベットたったの1文字・・・）のロゴに変えてしまうのは果たして正しい選択なのか？

競合となるメタ社の新しいSNSがリリースされたという状況から見ても、このタイミングでの変更は大きな賭けのように思われます。

言うまでもなく、アルファベットXの発音は“エックス”ですが、発音表記は"eks"となります。

そして、同じ発音で別の単語（すなわち同音異義語）は、

となり、その意味は、

A former spouse or partner.

ということで、多くのツイッターユーザーにとっては、Xと改名したサービスはもはやこれまで親しんだアプリではない、という訳です。

マスク氏はアルファベットのエックスがお好きらしく、同氏が創設した宇宙旅行の会社スペースX、PayPalの前身であるオンライン銀行のX.com、はたまた物議を醸した息子に名前、等々。

今回の改名に関しても、世間の声に対して本人はどこ吹く風、といったところでしょうか。

暑い！！ ー blistering

この時期月並みな言葉ですが、ほんとに毎日暑いですね〜。

毎年梅雨明けは暑いものですが、今年はまた身体にこたえる暑さだと感じます。（歳をとったせいもありますが。）

関東地方では40度に迫るところもあるということで、熱中症警戒アラートが毎日のように出ています。

さて、これまでにも当ブログでは「暑い！」と度々悲鳴をあげてきましたが、「暑い！」の表現に新たなコレクションが加わりました。

"blistering"です。

The heat wave that has scorched much of the American South and Southwest is now spreading through the Midwest, bringing temperatures above 100 degrees, dangerous conditions for millions of people and pleas from state and local officials to avoid spending time outdoors.

暑いのは米国でも同じく、連日報道を目にします。中西部では華氏100度（摂氏37.7度）を超える都市が続出、一部では110度と言いますからこれは異常事態です。

さて、

blistering heat

の"blister"というのは、水膨れ、水疱のことです。動詞"blister"は、その水膨れを引き起こすという意味であり、今夏の暑さは皮膚に水脹れを起こすくらいひどい、ということです。

実のところ、"blistering"は水膨れに関係無く、程度がひどいこと、強烈であることを意味する形容詞になっています。

ですがこの炎天下、外に出ると陽焼けを通り越して、本当に水膨れを作ってしまいそうです。

reorient

来年2024年の米大統領の共和党指名候補を目指すデサンティス・フロリダ州知事が苦戦しているようです。

トランプ元大統領、バイデン大統領という高齢の2人に対して若いデサンティス氏には期待が寄せられていますが、実際は共和党内での支持率ではトランプ氏に30ポイント以上遅れを取るなど、苦戦していると報じられています。

(Bloomberg) -- Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’s presidential campaign has now laid off a third of his staff, accelerating job cuts as he tries to get his struggling bid for the Republican nomination back on track.

Roughly two dozen staffers have been let go as part of the changes as donors and supporters press DeSantis to salvage his campaign. He trails GOP frontrunner Donald Trump by a wide margin in polls.

どうやら選挙活動に伴う費用がオーバー気味らしく、前半戦にして資金繰りが厳しくなったということのようです。デサンティス陣営は人員の3分の1をクビにしたと報じられています。

スタッフを入れ替えて、体制を立て直し、ということなのだろうと思います。

引用した記事の冒頭部分で、"back on track"と出てきます。そして後半部分、

ともあります。"reorient"という動詞を取り上げたいと思います。

カタカナでも「オリエンテーション」（orientation）といい、新しい環境に不慣れな人に対するサポート、ガイド、といった意味で使われますが、"orient"という動詞の、方向付けを行う、適応させる、という意味から出たものです。

"orient"の語源は昇る、生ずる、起きるという意味のラテン語動詞oriorですが、陽が昇る東（東洋）を指すこともご存知かと思います。よって、"orient"という動詞は建物を東に向ける、配置する、というのが原義です。

さて、"reorient"は、再び、改めて、という意味の接頭辞re-が付いています。よって、再度方向付ける、改めて順応させる、という意味になります。

元々の目指していた方向（性）がズレていたのでやり直す、ということでしょう。つまり、体勢（体制）の立て直し、ということです。

AWOL

先日、韓国から国境を越えて北朝鮮に入国した米兵のことがニュースになりました。

北朝鮮側で拘束されたものと見られますが、その後の状況ははっきりしないまま時間が経過しています。

記事を引用しますが、ここで、AWOLという略語が出てきます。

The American-led U.N. Command in South Korea said Monday a conversation was started with Pyongyang about a U.S. soldier who ran into North Korea last week across, amidst nuclear-submarine movements in the area.

突然北朝鮮側へ越境するという奇行とも思える行動を取った米兵のことをAWOLと言っているものですが、これは、

absent without leave

を略したものです。（WOは"without"を略したもので、w/oと書かれることもあります。）

さて、その"absent without leave"とは、無断（無許可での）離隊、と辞書にありますが、いわゆる無断外出、無許可で持ち場（職務）を離れる、という意味です。

"absent"とはその場に居ないということ、「欠席」で、"leave"はここでは、許し、許可、の意味の名詞です。

辞書には軍事の用語として載っていますが、軍事か否かに関わらず用いられます。

ここでは無断欠勤の概念に近いでしょうか。

grumpy stayer

今日の1語、"grumpy stayer"は以前取り上げた"quiet quitting"のように、コンテクストとしては働く人、ワークプレイスに関わる表現です。"quiet quitting"と近い、兄弟関係のような表現です。

引用に出てくるIT関係の会社員が、

I'm very grumpy lately.

と発言しているように、"grumpy stayer"とは現在置かれている労働環境に不満があり、「不機嫌な」（grumpy）思いを隠せない人達です。

不満といっても、それは待遇面だったり、出世しないとか、同僚に恵まれないとか、忙し過ぎる、とか色々あるものですが、"grumpy stayer"の場合は自身が思い描く仕事とのミスマッチということが主な原因であり、仕事の質に関わるもののようです。

記事の社員は期待した新しい職務が実のところそうでなかった、という背景があるようです。

であれば辞めて新しい仕事を探すという選択肢もあるはずですが、今よりも良いと思われる仕事が見つからない、だから不満だけれども現状維持（stay）せざるを得ない、というところが"grumpy stayer"なのです。

労働市場が冷え込んでいるというような状況もあって、そう簡単に条件も良くて期待を満たす仕事も見つからないというのもあるようです。

certiorari

2020年にミネソタ州でGeorge Floydさんが警官に拘束され死亡しました。Floydさんの首を脚膝で押さえ付けて窒息死させた警官は殺人罪などに問われ有罪となり、Black Lives Matter運動を全米、また世界的に引き起こすきっかけとなったものです。

22年と6ヶ月の実刑が確定したDerek Chauvin被告の弁護士は再審を求めて上訴するようです。

CNNの記事から引用です。

Derek Chauvin, the man who killed George Floyd, will take the appeal of his state murder conviction to the Supreme Court after Minnesota’s top court denied the request to hear his petition.

“We will petition the United States Supreme Court via a Writ of Certiorari and ask them to review the lower court’s decision on behalf of Mr. Chauvin,” attorney Gregory M. Erickson said in a statement Wednesday.

Chauvin被告の弁護士はミネソタ州裁判所が被告による請願を棄却したことなどを不服として最高裁に上訴するということのようですが、記事中、

via a Writ of Certiorari 

という言葉が出てきます。

"Writ of Certiorari"とはなんぞや？ということなのですが、いかにも法律用語、またラテン語という感じがします。

"writ"は命令（書）のことで、"certiorari"とは事件（書類）移送命令書、という意味で、上級裁判所が下級裁判所に命じるものなんだそうです。（研究社新英和大辞典）

"certiorari"はやはりラテン語で、意味的には"to be informed"という説明が見えます。

ラテン語のスペルからは英単語の"certain"、あるいは"certify"が見てとれますね。

米国の裁判や法律について詳しいことは分かりませんが、"certiorari"においては上級裁判所（ここでは最高裁）がその裁量により下級審の見直しをするということのようです。

quagmire

ロシアのプーチン大統領が、来月8月にアフリカで行われる予定のBRICS会合に出席しない意向であると報じられています。プーチン氏に対しては、ウクライナに対する戦争犯罪の罪で国際刑事裁判所（ICC）から逮捕状が出ていますが、BRICSが開催される南アフリカ共和国はプーチン氏が入国した場合、ICC加盟国としてプーチン氏を逮捕する義務が生じるということで、行方が注目されていました。

最近の報道を見ていますと、ウクライナのNATO加盟に纏わる議論の進展、ロシアへの禁輸措置の強化、等、包囲網は狭まってきています。

ロシアもウクライナ産穀物の輸出に関する合意から離脱するなど対抗措置に出ていますが、西側諸国との対立の状況は悪化する一方です。

引用した記事では、プーチン大統領の置かれている状況を、

diplomatic quagmires

と言っています。

"quagmire"というのは、ぬかるんだ土地、沼地のことですが、比喩的に、苦境、窮状を意味します。

いわゆる「泥沼化した」状況ということであり、果たしてどのような形で戦争の終結を迎えることになるのでしょうか。

"quagmire"という単語ですが、quag（廃語）は沼地、ぬかるみ、そして"mire"も泥沼、苦境の意味です。同じような意味の言葉を重ねた単語ということになります。

weekend warrior

運動習慣のある人はそうでない人に比べて健康的だというのはそうだろうと思います。

ところで、運動習慣とは言っても、ほとんどの方は日々のお勤めの傍ら、運動の時間を捻出しているのが現実であろうと思われます。勤めのある平日はとても時間が取れないので休日にまとまった時間を取って運動する、という方もおられるでしょう。

今日目に留まった記事によりますと、週末にまとめて運動する人が得る健康面でのベネフィットは、毎日運動を継続する人と比較してもほぼ同等という研究成果が得られたそうです。

People who fit an entire week’s recommended exercise into a couple of days have a similarly low risk of heart disease and stroke as those who spread out their physical activity, researchers say.

The results from a major study on “weekend warriors” against more regular exercisers suggest that even when people are too busy to exercise in the working week, making up for the inactivity at the weekend can still improve cardiovascular health.

週末にまとめて運動をする人のことを、

weekend warriors

と表現しています。

直訳すれば、週末の戦士、となりますが、こんな表現があるのか、と思って辞書を引いてみると、ちゃんとあるんですね。

American Heritage Dictionaryでは、

One who enthusiastically engages in an activity or hobby on the weekends outside of regular employment

と定義されており、勤めが休みとなる日（主に週末）に運動や趣味に没頭する人を指すようです。

色々な用例を見てみると、"weekend warriors"が指すのは、ランニングやサイクリング、テニスに水泳、などなど、やはり運動系が多いようです。

私はランニング派でして、平日もなるべく時間を探して走りますが、このところは猛暑で・・・。（言い訳です。）

catamaran

太平洋の大海原を彷徨うこと2ヶ月、オーストラリア人男性と犬が救助されました。

男性はこの4月に、メキシコからポリネシアを目指してボートで出発したそうですが、暴風でボートが壊れ、雨水と魚を取って生き延びていたそうです。

Sydney resident Tim Shaddock, a 51-year-old cancer survivor, and his pooch Bella set off from La Paz, Mexico, in April on a catamaran journey to French Polynesia, but their vessel was damaged in a storm several weeks later, Australia’s 9News reported.

The pair survived by drinking rainwater and eating raw fish as they waited for a miracle while adrift in the Pacific.

On Wednesday, a helicopter conducting surveillance for a tuna trawler spotted the tiny catamaran bobbing in the middle of the vast ocean.

他メディアの記事では、男性が乗っていたのは"boat"、また"vessel"なのですが、引用した記事では、

catamaran

という単語が出てきます。

初めてみる単語だったのですが、これは双胴船と呼ばれる船の一種を指すのだそうです。

双胴船というのは、船体が並行して2つ並べられたものに甲板を渡した構造になっているもので、丸太を2本並べてロープなどで縛って繋いだような筏船も含まれます。

語源はタミル語で、丸太を繋げた（もの）、という意味だそうです。インド南部で話されるタミル語を語源とする英語というのはあまり記憶にありません。

man-of-war

今日は海の日の祝日です。昨日より関東地方は良く晴れて気温上昇、危険な暑さと報道されています。既に梅雨明けしたような空模様です。

さて、夏本番といったところですが、海開き、プール開きの季節ですね。海水浴にはここ数年行っておりませんが、海水浴につきものなのがクラゲではないでしょうか。

クラゲを英語で"jellyfish"と言いますが、別名"man-of-war"（man o’ war）とも言います。

Sharks are getting all the bad press, but race for the arrival of another ocean danger — the Portuguese man o’ war, experts told The Post.

The jellyfish relative can show up now through August — depending on offshore winds from the tropics — and can surface from Montauk to the Jersey Shore.

Portuguese man o’ war

と出てきますが、これはカツオノエボシ属のクラゲの総称、俗に言う電気クラゲを指します。

クラゲになぜこのような名前が付けられているのでしょうか？

実は、"man-of-war"というのはフリゲート艦、つまり軍艦を指すのですが、海面を漂うクラゲの姿態にフリゲート艦との類似性を見た人がクラゲを"man-of-war"と呼ぶようになったと言われています。（"man"には、"ship"の意味があります。）

「ポルトガルの」（Portuguese）という形容が付いているのは、ポルトガルのフリゲート艦に似ていたから、ということらしいです。

ちなみに小生が"Portuguese man-of-war"という言葉に最初に出会ったのは、ヘミングウェイの「老人と海」（The Old Man and the Sea）を読んだ時でした。

8 ball

先週、米大統領官邸（ホワイトハウス）のウエストウィングでコカインが発見されたという事件で、シークレットサービスは捜査の終結を発表しました。

発見時は現場からの一時退避措置がとられる騒ぎだったようですが、一般見学者もアクセスできるというエリアの監視カメラ映像解析やコカインが入っていた袋の指紋採取も、犯人の特定には至らなかったようです。

麻薬物の名称には隠語、俗語が付き物です。

コカイン（cocaine）を"coke"と言うことはよく知られていると思いますが、記事中、

8-ball

ともあります。

"8-ball" (eight ball) の数字「8」は実は、eighth (one-eighth) のことだそうです。つまり、8分の1を指すのですが、何の8分の1かというと、1オンスの8分の1（3〜3.5ミリグラム）ということです。恐らくはこのような少量で取り引きされることが多い麻薬物を指す代名詞のようになったものと思われ、"8 ball"と言う場合、コカインに限らず他の麻薬物も指すようです。

Merriam-Websterオンラインによれば、初出は1980年代だそうで、比較的最近の俗語ということになります。

bumper

「バンパー」（bumper）と言うと、クルマの前後に付いている、衝突事故時の衝撃を和らげるための部品のことですが、"bumper"という英単語にはそれ以外の意味があると知りました。

Linkedin、Google、Meta、という名だたるネット大手を渡り歩いてきた女性の話なんですが、人も羨む給料とボーナスの額に興味がある方は記事をどうぞ。

さて、この女性は羨ましいような稼ぎを捨てて自営になったようなのですが、引用した最後の部分で、

とあり、ここで"bumper"という表現が使われています。

ここでの"bumper"は無論、クルマのバンパーなどではなく、非常に大きな、豊富な、という意味の形容詞なのです。こんな意味があるとは知りませんでした。

先日"bump"という単語を取り上げた際にも触れましたが、"bump"という動詞にはぶつかる、衝突するという意味に加えて、価格などを吊り上げるといった意味があります。ぶつかったり、衝突することで膨らむ、というのが原義にあり、故に形容詞としての意味にも繋がるわけです。

非常に大きな、豊富な、という形容詞の意味合いは、"bumper crop"、"bumper harvest"（豊作）という表現にも見られます。

grievous bodily harm

オーストラリアで、95歳女性が警官にテーザー銃を使われてその後死亡したという事件で、女性の遺族が州政府を相手取って訴えを起こしました。

女性は認知症を患っていましたが、介護施設でナイフを持っていたところを警官がテーザー銃を使って制止しようとした模様です。女性は転倒して頭を強く打ち、1週間後に死亡したというものです。

この件は5月のニュースで読んだので記憶に残っています。

訴えられている警官が問われているのは、95歳という高齢に加えて歩行器に掴まるか弱い老女にテーザー銃を使うことの正当性というところでしょうか。

女性は転倒し、頭を強く打った結果亡くなりましたが、記事では、

grievous bodily harm

という表現が使われています。

ちょっと変わった言い回しだなぁと思って辞書を引いてみると、実は立派な法律用語なのでした。

研究社新英和大辞典では「重傷」、「重大な身体傷害」という訳語になっています。また、手元にOxford Dictionary of Lawがあるのですが、"grievous bodily harm"は略してGBHとも言うそうです。

"grievous bodily harm"のgrievousは"grieve"という単語、またgrieveは"grief"（不幸、不運、またそれらによってもたらされる悲嘆、悲しみ）と関連があります。いずれも、ラテン語gravis（重い）から来ています。

脱炭素社会の実現という取り組みの下、電気自動車の導入が進んでいます。先進国はガソリン車の新車販売を20xx年までに禁止するなどといった目標を掲げ、電気自動車の購入に対しては補助金を支出するなどしていますが、電気自動車はまだまだ高価格帯にあり、庶民にはなかなか手が出ないという現実を耳にします。

オーストラリアの事情も同じようなところでしょうか、リサーチによれば電気自動車テスラを保有する人というのは、シドニー郊外などの富裕層エリアに多いという調査結果があるそうです。

記事に出てくる形容表現、"well-heeled"というのは、金持ちの、富裕な、という意味です。

"heel"（ヒール）とは足の踵のことですが、動詞の"heel"にはお金を持たせるとか武器を供給する、また情報を提供する、といった意味合いがあり、受身で用いられます。

また、"heel"は靴の踵部分でもあります。擦り減った踵の靴を履いたサラリーマンは貧乏臭いと言われます（苦笑）。

on the back burner

"on the back burner"という表現があります。"burner"というのは、ガスストーブの火口のことを言いますが、調理器具のコンロをイメージすると分かりやすいでしょう。

"back burner"は手前にあるバーナーに対して、奥の方にあるバーナーです。よって、差し当たっては調理しないで少しの間除けておくための場所ということです。

Collins Cobuild Dictionary of Idiomsでは下記のように説明されています。

If you put a project or issue on the back burner, you decide not to do anything about it until a later date, because you do not consider it to be very urgent or important.

sew up last stitches

SNS大手のメタ社がフェースブック、インスタグラムに次ぐ新しいサービス、Threads（邦紙ではカタカナで「スレッズ」）を公開しました。

Threadsはツイッターの競合となるものですが、イーロン・マスク氏は早速反応したようで、同社の知財を侵害していると主張し、裁判に訴える可能性について言及したようです。

メタ社のThreadsは公開間も無く登録ユーザーが1千万を超えているとの報道もあり、今後どのくらい拡がるか、ツイッターとの競合がどうなるか注目されます。

Hayley Jones, director of social at PR and digital agency the PHA Group, told MailOnline that the launch of Threads could 'sew up the final stitches in Twitter's demise.'

She said: 'Already, the app has surpassed 10 million sign-ups within hours of launch. The app is connected to users' Instagram accounts and can port all the information from their existing profile onto their Threads profile. This ease of use will pay dividends when battling Twitter for user share.

さて、引用しましたのは、デーリーメール紙の記事からです。

the launch of Threads could 'sew up the final stitches in Twitter's demise.'

という部分に着目しましょう。

メタ社の新サービスの名称がThreads（糸）というだけに、

sew up（縫う）

stitch（一針、一縫い）

とはシャレが効いています。

"sew up"は縫うという意味のほか、比喩的に、確実にする、とか確保する、決定する、という意味合いがあります。

そして、"last stitches"は最後の一針、一縫いということですが、こちらも仕上げ、最終的なトドメというようなニュアンスがある言葉です。

マスク氏がツイッターを買収して以降、サービス面で様々な変更が行われたことによる混乱もあり、広告主も離れていったという経緯がありますが、そうした状況下、Threadsはツイッターの終焉にトドメを刺すかも知れないというところでしょうか。

odometer

クルマを運転する人ならばオドメーター（odometer）という言葉を聞いたことがあると思います。

クルマの総走行距離を示すものです。

中古車ではしばしば距離を少なく見せかけて高く売るために改竄されることがあります。

Thousands of second-hand car owners have found out their vehicles are worth a whole lot less than they paid for after discovering through a new online odometer check their speedos have been tampered with.

今日読んだオーストラリアの記事からの引用です。

"odometer"という言葉は知っていましたが、何故そういうのか、どういう語源なのか、漠然と気になりながらも、調べずにいました。

-meterというスペルは明らかに「メーター」ですから、odo-が何を指すのかという話ですが、どうしても"odor"（臭い）がイメージされてしまうのです。

改めて辞書を引いたところ、odo-はギリシャ語で道（road）を意味するhodosから来ているのでした。

ギリシャ語hodosのhが取れてしまっているのが英単語の"odometer"となりますが、hを保持した、hodometerというスペルも存在します。

ということで、長年ぼんやりとしていたことがハッキリしました。

ちなみに、クルマにはタコメーター（tachometer）というものも付いていますが、こちらもギリシャ語で速いことを意味するtakhosから来ています。

クルマのタコメーターは車軸の回転数（回転速度）を示すメーターとなっています。

Orwellian

ルイジアナ州裁判所が、バイデン政権の政府関係者がソーシャルメディア運営会社等に接触することを制限する命令を出した、と報じられています。

対象はホワイトハウス報道官や保健相などで、新型コロナウィルスを巡ってSNS上で展開される議論などに政府関係者が介入することを、言論の自由を侵害する検閲行為と見做したということです。

A federal judge in Louisiana ruled Tuesday that the Biden administration likely violated the First Amendment by censoring unfavorable views on social media over the course of the coronavirus pandemic, calling the efforts “Orwellian.”

U.S. District Court Judge Terry Doughty also issued a sweeping preliminary injunction barring numerous federal officials and agencies — including Surgeon General Vivek Murthy, Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre and all employees of the Justice Department and FBI — from having any contact with social media firms for the purpose of discouraging or removing First Amendment-protected speech.

この裁判所命令の背景には政治的なものが多分にあるようです。

ルイジアナ州は共和党地盤であり、裁判所判事はトランプ前政権による指名と言われています。

パンデミック下、感染防止抑制策やマスク着用の義務化など巡って、民主、共和両党が対立しました。

さて、保守派判事の言葉によれば、バイデン政権関係者によるソーシャルメディアへの働き掛けは、

Orwellian

であるということです。

"Orwellian"というのは、英国の作家のオーウェル（George Orwell (1903 - 1950)）の名前から来ています。

オーウェルの代表作「1984」は、言論や行動が政府当局の監視下に置かれた登場人物を描く、全体主義的な未来社会をテーマにした反ユートピア小説です。

American Heritage Dictionaryの定義を引用します。

Of, relating to, or evocative of the works of George Orwell, especially the satirical novel 1984, which depicts a futuristic totalitarian state.

同じくオーウェルの「1984」に由来する表現に、

Big Brother

があります。

score to settle

機密文書の持ち出しで訴追されているトランプ元大統領。

機密であるという認識がありながらそれを側近にひけらかしていたとされる録音テープが暴露された件については先日も取り上げました。

そもそもトランプ氏は何故、機密指定の書類を自身の別荘に持ち運んだのでしょうか？

に興味を覚えたところです。

色々細かな事実分析はあるのですが、印象に残ったのは以下のようなくだりです。

What there is not, conspicuously, is a motive.

But what seems the most likely explanation is the simplest, stupidest, and most aggravating one: that Trump had no plan for the documents, except perhaps for use as souvenirs, trophies to be shown off, maybe as evidence for petty score-settling. 動機は何だったのか？

シンプルな答えは、単に自慢したかったから、だそうです。さもありなん！？

上記のくだりでは、"score-settling"という表現も出てきます。

ここでのスコア（score）は恨み、怨恨、という意味があり、"score to settle"とは晴らすべき恨み、という意味です。

トランプ氏の恨みが具体的に何であったのかは触れられていませんが、腹立ち紛れに機密文書を我が物顔で持ち出したという感じでしょうか。

ところで、スコア（score）というのは以前も取り上げましたように、数えたり記録したりするためにつける刻み目のことです。これが転じて、ゲームやスポーツの試合で記録する得点（表）の意味になった訳です。

一方、やはり記録する意味合いで、酒場の勘定書という意味もあって、

pay one’s score

は勘定を清算する、ツケ（借金）を払うという意味でもあります。

"settle〜"も同様の意味がありますが、こちらは報復の意味合いに変化したもののようです。

Chess（チェス）とCheckers（チェッカー）

2023年も半分が終わり、7月に入りました。

イーロン・マスク氏が率いる電気自動車メーカーのテスラは第二四半期の業績を発表しました。

新車の生産台数、販売台数共に前年同期比から大幅増加した模様です。

Tesla delivered a record number of vehicles in the second quarter, as its strategy to cut prices drove a sharp increase in sales of its most popular electric vehicles.

“The price cuts [were] a smart poker move for Tesla and are paying major dividends in the field especially for the China market,” said Dan Ives, an analyst at Wedbush Securities. “Tesla continues to play chess while other electric vehicle players are playing checkers and this was another trophy case quarter for Musk and co.”

Tesla, which cut prices at the start of the year to boost demand, has set an ambitious target of increasing volumes by an average of 50% a year.

業績好調はテスラの販売戦略が効いているというアナリストの見方があるようです。

同社の電気自動車は決して安くはありませんが、今年始めに値下げを断行、これが販売台数を押し上げたようです。特に、電気自動車メーカーがしのぎを削るとされる中国で売上げを伸ばしたようです。

記事中、興味深い表現が出てきます。

Tesla continues to play chess while other electric vehicle players are playing checkers 

というくだりです。

直訳するならば、他社がチェッカーをプレイする中、テスラはチェスをプレイしている、となりましょうか。が、何を言わんとしているのでしょうか？

何となく慣用表現のように思われ、そのパターンとしては、

X plays chess while Y plays checkers

というところかと思われたのですが、手元にある辞書にはそれらしき表現は見当たりません。

そもそもチェスやチェッカーにあまり馴染みがないとちょっと分かり難いかも知れませんが、チェスとチェッカーではゲームのルールも複雑さも異なるということがまずあります。

チェッカーは自分の駒を動かして、相手の駒を飛び越えることで奪うというゲームです。これに対してチェスは6種類の異なる駒を駆使して相手のキングを詰ませるゲームであり、チェッカーに比べてより複雑、かつ戦略が要求されるゲームであると言えます。

挟み将棋と将棋の違いと言い換えても良いでしょうか。

従って、他社がチェッカーをしている中、テスラがプレイしているのはチェスである、というのは、同社の経営戦略が他社を凌駕している、そのレベルが一段も二段も上である、ということを言わんとしているものと思われます。

「チェス」と「チェッカー」の対比による比喩は英語ではよく見られるもので、以下のような用例にも見て取れます。

When you're a drug dealer, you not only have to figure out how to do that, but you also have to figure out how to avoid getting shot by your competitors and how to avoid getting apprehended by the police. So it requires a level of, like, playing chess instead of checkers - thinking on multiple levels all the time and being extremely alert to everything around you that, I think, would serve a lot of these guys well in the business world.
