ブレーキとアクセルを踏み間違えてしまって・・・、という日本でもよくある交通事故は海外でも変わらないようです。


An elderly man was killed when a motorist mistakenly hit the gas and plowed into him on a Queens sidewalk, dragging him into the street, cops said on Saturday.

Kenlyn Franklyn, 60, was attempting a U-turn from eastbound to westbound Rockaway Beach Boulevard near Beach 117th Street in Rockaway Park around noon Wednesday when he accidentally hit the gas, cops said.

Franklyn’s 2001 Ford F150 then mounted the north sidewalk, striking 88-year-old Patrick Kenny and then dragging him into the street.

ですが、アメリカ英語では、


gas pedal


がよく用いられます。記事では、"hit the gas"と出てきますが、単に"gas"がアクセルのことを指しています。

"step on the gas"という成句もあり、意味は同じくアクセルを踏む、という意味です。
