旧ソビエト連邦において、最後の書記長、大統領を務めたゴルバチョフ氏が91歳で死去しました。

同氏が東西の冷戦を終結し、ソ連邦の終焉をもたらしたリーダーとして歴史に刻まれることは間違いありません。

ある意味で、型破りなリーダーであったと言えるかもしれません。引用した記事においても、

と評されています。

"broke the mold"の"mold"（mould）というのは型、鋳型のことです。

まだ学生であった小生は、ゴルバチョフ氏のニュース映像を、当時テレビで目にすることがしばしばありました。穏やかにも見える表情（と特徴的な頭頂部）に、コワモテのロシア政治家には無い親しみやすさのようなものも感じられました。

cavalier

次期首相を決定する英・保守党の党首選は、今週末投票、週明けには結果が出るということで注目を集めています。

優勢とされるトラス氏は、予定していたBBCのインタビュー番組への出席をキャンセルすると一方的に伝えたようですが、関係者の落胆と波紋を呼んでいます。

時間が取れなくなったというのが表向きの理由のようですが、インタビューで質問攻めに遭うのを回避したとも取られています。

Liz Truss has pulled out of a BBC One interview with Nick Robinson that was due to air on Tuesday evening.

Ms Truss' team said she could no longer spare the time for the one-on-one programme, the BBC said in a statement.

BBCの番組のインタビューが候補者の情勢にどの程度の影響を与えるのかよく分からないところではありますが、トラス氏は投票直前の最終盤で揚げ足を取られるのを避けたかったのかも知れません。

さて、記事の続きに以下のようなくだりがあります。

Former BBC broadcaster Andrew Neil said he feared Ms Truss' decision would be the "final nail in the coffin" for political leaders interviews, calling it a "cavalier way to behave".

メディア側の意見を述べたものですが、有権者の立場からすると、予定されていたインタビューはやはり一国のリーダーの資質を見極める上で重要な位置付けだという思いがあるようです。

ところで、

calling it a "cavalier way to behave"

という部分に着目したいと思います。

"it"が指すのはトラス氏の出演キャンセルに他なりませんが、それを"cavalier way to behave"と評しているというのはどういう意味か、一瞬戸惑いました。

つまり、"cavalier"の意味するところなんですが、"cavalier"から「騎士道精神」という日本語を思い浮かべて、頓珍漢な感じがしたものです。

勿論、辞書にもそう載っています。騎士道精神とは、婦人に丁重な態度、紳士的な振る舞いのことです。しかし、女性であるトラス氏に対して、また番組出演キャンセルを批判されているコンテクストで、騎士道精神というのも変な話です。

改めて辞書で"cavalier"の意味を確認し、否定的な意味合いとしては、

尊大な、横柄な、傲慢な

という意味があることが分かりました。（不勉強・・・。）

相反する意味合いを併せ持つ単語ということになります。

all-hands-on-deck

今日の単語、"all-hands-on-deck"は船乗りの表現です。

"deck"というのは船の甲板のことで、"All hands on deck!"というのは、その甲板に乗組員全員が集合せよ、という意味です。

そこから、緊急時などに総動員で事にあたることを意味するフレーズとして使われます。

デトロイトで無差別銃撃事件が発生し、容疑者がまだ捕まっていません。FBIを始めとする当局関係者を総動員した捜索が行われています。

The jury is out.

英・保守党の党首選は来月5日には雌雄を決するそうで、候補の2名、トラス氏とスナク氏の論戦が報じられています。

今日読んだ記事によると、海を渡った隣国であるフランスとの関係について、両者のスタンスが話題のようです。

フランスのマクロン大統領は敵か味方か、という問いに対して、迷わず「味方」と答えたスナク氏ですが、一方のトラス氏は、

The jury’s out.

と答えました。これはどういう意味でしょうか？

UK Foreign Secretary Liz Truss, front-runner to become Britain’s next prime minister, said the “jury’s out” on whether French President Emmanuel Macron is a friend or an enemy.

“President Macron, friend or foe?” Truss was asked by host Julia Hartley-Brewer in a quick-fire round at a Conservative Party hustings event in eastern England on Thursday night.

上記の引用を読むとお分かり頂けると思いますが、"The jury’s out."というのは、まだ決定していない、という意味で使われているようです。

このフレーズは慣用句で、Merriam-Websterによれば、

informal

—used to say that something has not yet been decided or has not yet become clear

と説明されています。

ご存知のように、"jury"というのは裁判で評決を裁判長に答申する陪審員のことです。その"jury"が"out"（外にいる）、というのが文字通りの意味です。「外」とはどこかと言うと、法廷の外であり、陪審員室ということになります。

つまり、陪審員室でまだ協議をしているところで、評決がまだ出ていない、確定していない、ということを言わんとしている訳です。（結論が出たら法廷に戻り、裁判官に評決を答申。）

"The jury is still out."とも言うと、ランダムハウス英和にありました。

英仏間には不法移民の問題があり、これを意識したトラス氏の発言だったようです。

decoy

カナダ、オタワの有名ホテルのロビーに飾られていた英・チャーチル首相の写真が盗まれたそうです。

有名写真家が1941年に撮影したものだそうですが、偽物にすりかえられているのが分かったということです。ホテルの利用客が記念に写真におさめることも多いらしく、「本物」を撮影した宿泊客の情報提供などから、盗まれたのは恐らく昨年のクリスマスから年始にかけてのことと推察されるそうです。

半年以上、偽物の写真が掛かっていた訳です。ホテルのスタッフが写真がやや傾いているのに気が付いて直そうとしたことから発覚したものですが、オリジナルよりやや小さいことや、写真家の署名が偽造であることなど、偽物であることを示す事実が次々と明らかに。

さて、今日の一語です。本物そっくりの偽物を、記事のタイトルでは、

decoy

と表現しています。

デコイ（decoy）と聞くと、囮（おとり）、罠（わな）という日本語を思い浮かべますが、ここでは偽物のこと、

A replica or imitation of something, especially when intended to deceive by obscuring the number or location of the actual objects being imitated

(American Heritage Dictionary)

という意味です。

他の記事では、"fake"と表現しており、こちらの方が馴染みがあるかも知れません。

ところで、"decoy"という単語はオランダ語から来ています。

オランダ語で、de kooiというのは英語では"cage"に相当する単語で、鳥などをおびき寄せて捕えるための仕掛け（捕獲のための網を巡らせた池、凹地）を指すものだったようです。

オランダ語de kooiの"de"というのは英語の定冠詞 the に相当し、英語に取り入れる際に単語の一部と誤解されたため、"decoy"となってしまったという話です。

sturm und drang

唐突ですが、"sturm und drang"という表現をご存知でしょうか？

スペルからして英語にはちょっと見えません。"und"とあるのでドイツ語でしょうか？。

以下に引用する記事では普通に使われているので面食らってしまいますが、実際、"sturm und drang"はドイツ語そのものです。

Listen, I’m sure there will be a lot of sturm und drang about what the whistleblower disclosures mean for Elon Musk’s Twitter deal, but I want to focus on something dumber and pettier: Jack Dorsey.

研究社の新英和大辞典には、

Sturm und Drang

と、エントリが載っています。

ドイツ語なので、"und"の前後の名詞は大文字で始まります。辞書では、

シュトルムウントドランク（1770年代のドイツに起こった激越なロマン主義的文学運動）

とあります。ドイツ文学に明るくないため、正直なところ詳細はよく分からないのですが、そこから発展した意味としては、

動乱、動揺、革命（turmoil）

ということで、引用した記事で意味するところはこちらの方でしょう。

なお、英語では、ドイツ語からの直訳で、"Storm and Stress"というそうです。

英語は多くの外来語をそのままの形で吸収していますが、この"sturm und drang"もそのひとつだと思います。

もう少し用例を見てみたいと思い、コーパスを検索しますと、多くの用例がヒットし、このドイツ語がほとんど英語として定着していることが窺えます。

最初に引用した記事のように、名詞の語頭を大文字で始めるというドイツ語のルールではなく、小文字で"sturm und drang"としているものも多く見られます。

enthuse

今日取り上げる単語、"enthuse"はあまり見慣れない単語かもしれません。

"enthuse"は動詞で、

熱狂させる、感激させる

という意味です。

と、聞くと、"enthusiasm"（熱狂、熱中）や"enthusiastic"（熱烈な）という単語を思い出すのではないでしょうか。

実のところ、"enthuse"は"enthusiasm"という単語から派生したもので、言語学で「逆成」と呼ばれるものです。

以下に引用する用例は、本日見かけたThe Hillの記事から。

That being said, given how polarizing a figure Trump is — and how deeply divided the country is — the search likely will not change many voters’ minds when it comes to deciding which party to support in November’s midterm elections, especially given that Trump himself is not on the ballot. 記事の内容はというと、先日よりトランプ元大統領の私邸にFBIの捜索が入っている件に関するものです。

トランプ氏に対する熱狂的な支持者がいることはよく言われるところです。アンケート調査によれば、元大統領に対する嫌疑による捜査にも、共和党の支持者は揺らぐことがないようです。

The same poll found that, following the search, Republicans have a 14-point voter enthusiasm advantage over Democrats this year — as two-thirds (66 percent) of Republicans say they are “more enthusiastic” about voting in this year’s midterms compared to previous years, versus 52 percent of Democrats.

むしろ、今回の捜査をきっかけとして、共和党支持者は今秋に予定されている中間選挙への投票行動に意欲を見せているとも分析されており、これについては、

などと表現されています。

ここでも、"enthusiasm"、"enthusiastic"が出てくる訳ですが、"enthusiasm"という単語の-thu-という部分はギリシャ語で神を意味するtheosから来ており、"enthusiasm"の原義は神にインスパイアされた、取り憑かれた（ような熱狂）、という意味です。

deplatform

女性蔑視の甚だしい著名人のユーザーアカウントが、ティックトックなどのSNSで凍結されるに至ったそうです。

元キックボクシングのチャンピオンは、自ら"mosogynist"と公言して憚らず、男性優位の主張や女性を男性の所有物と見做すような発言を繰り返していましたが、こうした発言の内容がSNSのポリシーに違反すると判断されました。

In videos splashed across the internet, Andrew Tate, a onetime kickboxing champion turned self-styled men’s-help guru, has argued that women are the property of their husbands and should “have kids, sit at home, be quiet and make coffee.”

He has claimed that he needs authority over the women he dates, saying, “You can’t be responsible for a dog if it doesn’t obey you.” He has said he would attack a woman who accused him of cheating and described himself as “absolutely a misogynist.”

His fans have called him the king of toxic masculinity.

ここで、

"deplatform"

という動詞が使われています。アカウント凍結、またサービスからの除外、利用停止を意味していると思われます。

よく知られるようになったGAFAを始めとして、 SNSやメジャーなウェブサイトのことを「プラットフォーマー」（もしくは、"frightful five"とも）と呼ぶようになったのは、最近のことと思います。その"platform"という名詞に、分離や除外を意味する接頭辞de-が付されて動詞になったものです。

"deplatform"なる単語が存在するとは知らなかったのですが、Merriam-Websterオンラインではエントリがちゃんとあり、

to remove and ban (a registered user) from a mass communication medium (such as a social networking or blogging website)

と定義されていますので、まさにインターネット時代の単語だと思いました。

ところが、初出については1998年ということなので、SNS全盛のごく最近という訳ではなく、割と昔からあったということのようです。

さらに、Etymology Onlineによれば、攻撃的な発言をする人を阻止しようとすることを表現するのに、"no platform"という表現を用いる例が1970年代から確認されているということで、そうなるとネット以前の概念ということになります。

手元にあるハードカバーの辞典ではエントリ自体見当たりません。

nemesis

米国では今秋11月に予定されている中間選挙の予備選挙（primaryと呼ばれています）が各州で行われていますが、中でも最も注目されていたワイオミング州での予備選挙が先日開票されました。

注目されていたのは、共和党のチェイニー氏とヘイグマン候補の争いで、2021年1月に起きた議事堂襲撃事件をきっかけに反トランプを旗幟鮮明に打ち出したチェイニー氏に対して、トランプ氏が刺客として対抗馬に立てたヘイグマン氏、という構図でした。

結果として、ヘイグマン氏が大差の得票数で勝利し、チェイニー氏は負けを認めましたが、トランプ氏を阻止すべく、大統領選への参戦を検討しているとも報じられています。

Defeated Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney confirmed Wednesday that she is “thinking about” running for the White House to keep her nemesis, former President Donald Trump, “out of the Oval Office.”

チェイニー氏は、元副大統領のDick Cheney氏を父に持つ、政治家としては言わば名門の出とされる立場ですが、共和党の地盤でRed Stateとも呼ばれるワイオミング州でトランプ氏を敵に回した状況では苦しい立場での戦いだったようです。

チェイニー氏にとって、トランプ氏は、

nemesis

とされています。

Nemesisというのは、ギリシャ神話に出てくる応報天罰の神（女神）です。

不正を働く人間に対しては必ず罰を与えるというNemesisの名前は、正義の象徴であり、一般名詞化して、懲罰を加える人という意味で使われるのは納得です。

しかしながら、どういう訳か、

勝てない相手、ライバル

という意味で用いられるようになり、引用した記事の文脈ではこの意味が相当します。仇敵という日本語がぴったりでしょう。

"nemesis"が仇敵の意味を持つに至った経緯はよくわからないのですが、因果応報を受ける立場の者にとっては、その罰を回避することも出来ず、どうしようもない、敵わない、ということからこのような意味が生まれたのだろうかと思ったりします。

チェイニー氏にとってトランプ氏が"nemesis"だとすれば、大統領選でも結局勝てないのでは、と思ったりします。

in a heartbeat

"in a heartbeat"という表現を時々見かけます。

"heartbeat"は心臓の鼓動、心拍のことですが、"in a heartbeat"とはその1回（という短い時間）の間に、というのが字義通りの意味で、つまり即座に、直ちに、という意味合いで使われます。

一種の誇張、強意表現と言えるでしょう。

"If they do get laid off, they will be scooped up in a heartbeat because demand outstrips supply and will for a long time," she added.

最近の記事での用例を抜き出してみました。発言やその引用として用いられるものが多く、口語表現の類いと思われます。

one’s share

シェア（share）というと、共有するという意味で、分け前とか取り分、という意味でも使われるのはご存知の通りです。

商品やサービスの市場（マーケット）での占有率という意味もありますね。

以下の引用では、

one’s share of …

というフレーズで使われていますが、何と訳しましょうか。

"share"を手元の研究社新英和大辞典で引くと、

He had his share of worries.

彼にも人並みに苦労があった。

という例文が載っていました。

禍福は糾える縄の如し、という言葉を思い出します。

blockbuster

大ヒット商品のことを、

blockbuster

と表現することがあります。

特に映画において、観客動員数が多い場合にこの表現を用いるようです。

ところで、この"blockbuster"という単語の歴史を紐解くと、元は戦争で使う爆弾のことを指していたそうです。折しも昨日は8月15日の終戦記念日でしたが、第二次世界大戦において、使われた爆弾に由来するもので、その破壊力はひとかたまりになっている建物群（block）を一発で破壊できるというものだったという事です。

Before it referred to wildly popular movies — to the point that it influenced the name of a video-rental chain (RIP) — blockbuster was a product of World War II. The block in blockbuster referred to a block of buildings, and a blockbuster was a type of bomb capable of leveling all of them at once.

Kosovar

バルカン半島中心部に位置するコソボ共和国（Kosovo）という国名はご存知でしょう。

ユーゴスラビア解体の過程で、2008年に独立を宣言した国です。

そのコソボ国民については、

世界各国、地域や都市に住む人を指す語尾は、Americanや Russianなどに見られる-nがお馴染みですが、国名や都市名によってはその語尾が違ってくるものがあります。

北朝鮮政府は新型コロナウィルスとの戦いに勝利したと発表しました。

世界における保健衛生史上の奇跡と豪語しているそうなのですが、ワクチン接種もままならない状況が知られているだけに、眉に唾して受け取る人がほとんどなのではないでしょうか。

金正恩氏自身がコロナに感染し、一時高熱症状にも陥ったと公表されましたが、それを聴く軍人や関係者が涙を流している映像が世界中で流されています。

ナンバー2である金与正氏は新型コロナウィルスは韓国からの「ビラ」によって持ち込まれたと主張し、韓国への報復措置を警告したそうです。

独裁政権によるこうしたプロパガンダ的映像は北朝鮮ならではと思わされます。

今日の単語、"henchman"というのは、政治家などの支持者、支援者、という意味ですが、

下等なごきげん取り、取巻き

（研究社新英和大辞典）

という意味でもあり、引用したThe Sun の記事タイトルの意味合いはむしろこちらの方であろうと思われます。

なお、"henchman"のhench〜とは、古英語で馬を意味するhengestから来ており、"henchman"とは主人の馬の世話をする従者のことを指したそうです。そこから、一般的に高い身分の人間に仕える家来、家臣、小姓とか給仕を指すようになったようですが、現代ではこれらの意味で用いられることはもはやなく、廃語とされています。

トランプ元大統領は、自身がオーナーとなっている一族の企業が不正問題で訴追されている件で、ニューヨーク州司法当局による質疑に対して宣誓証言を拒否し、黙秘権を行使すると表明した模様です。

「宣誓証言」のことを"deposition"といいます。

正直なところ、"deposition"という単語を見て（聞いて）、すぐには宣誓証言と浮かびませんでした。というのも、解任する、罷免するという意味の動詞"depose"が頭に浮かんだからです。

改めて辞書を引いてみると、"deposition"、"depose"共に、罷免、解任、そして宣誓証言の意味があり、また、"deposition"と"depose"は語源を同一にしている（ラテン語deponere）ことが分かります。

ところで、もうひとつ、"deposit"という単語もあります。こちらも同じくラテン語deponeeを語源に持つ単語ですが、馴染みのある意味としては銀行にお金を預け入れる、というものがあります。

語源的には、"deposition"はこの"deposit"から派生したそうですが（Online Etymology Dictionary）、英語では"depose"、"deposit"という2つの動詞が生まれたため、ごっちゃになってしまったようです。

その混乱を表しているかのようですが、以下のような用例に当たりました。

ここでは、（"deposit"ではなく）"depose"という動詞が使われていますが、

Trump was to be deposed by lawyers

と、受動態になっており、あたかも「解任（される）、罷免（される）」というような読み方ができてしまいそうです。

しかし、トランプ氏はもはや大統領職にあらず、またどのような職から「解任、罷免」されるのか不明ですから、ここでの"to be deposed"はやはり、宣誓証言（することになっている）、という意味合いです。コーパスで検索してみますと、宣誓証言するという意味合いでの"be deposed"の用例は普通にあるようです。

トランプ氏は自身の企業を巡る疑惑とそれに関連する捜査については、魔女狩りだと批難しています。

ご存知の通り、イギリスでは先月辞任を表明したジョンソン首相の後任を選出する動きが注視されています。

有力候補として、スナク氏、トラス氏の2名が邦紙でも写真付きで取り上げられているのをよく目にしますが、このほど、これら2名の候補者の討論会が行われたようです。

記事によれば、有力候補と目される両氏は主にインフレ軽減策について持論を戦わせたもようです。

とあることから、これが5回目の「候補者による討論会」であったということと思われます。

"hustings"という単語について、正直なところこれまでお目にかかったことがありませんでしたので、辞書を引きました。

議会、裁判所の意味があるのですが、選挙場、また選挙運動の意味でも用いられ、ここでは、

（議員候補者の）政見発表演説

（研究社新英和大辞典）

という意味で使われています。

そもそも"hustings"とは、"house"と"thing"から成るとされ、遡ること約1000年、古ノルド語では、議会、法廷（assembly）のこと指すのだそうです。

いにしえより、議会、法廷の場というものは一段高く設置された「ステージ」で行われてきました。そうした壇上に登ることを目指す候補者も同様に目されてきた訳で、"hustings"は候補者の選挙活動も意味するようになった、とMerriam-Websterオンラインの解説にあります。

なお、"hustings"は単数扱いの名詞（単複同形）です。

引用したのは先月の記事ですが、2021年1月6日にトランプ元大統領支持者らがワシントンD.C.で起こした暴動に関しての公聴会が米議会で行われており、その状況が日々報じられていたところです。

暴動の原因を明らかにするという本筋からは全く逸れた話題ですが、その公聴会に出席しているクラーク・ケントばりの！？美男子が話題になっています。

記事の写真を見ると、なるほどそっくりです。（と言っても、最近の若い人には分からないかなぁ・・・。）

さて、この美男子にネットが騒然ということなんですが、

というくだりの、"go gaga (over)"という表現は初めて見ます。

"gaga"というのはフランス語から来ているらしく、狂人のことを指すそうですが、元は特に意味のない擬声語であるという説明が語源解説に見られます。

"go gaga (over somebody)"は、〜に対して夢中である、とか、のぼせあがっている、という意味で用いられます。

検索してみると芸能関連の記事が多くヒットするのですが、レディ・ガガさんとは関係はないようです。

手元にある仏和辞典に"gaga"のエントリがあり、老いぼれた、耄碌した、という意味で載っていました。同じくフランス語のgateuxという単語（お菓子のgateauxとはまた別の単語）に関連しているらしく、このgateuxは、のぼせあがった、夢中になって我を忘れた、という意味で用いられるようです。

thumb one’s nose

先週、米下院議長のペロシ氏が台湾を訪問し、これに対して中国が激しく反発し、米中間が緊張しました。

ペロシ氏の台湾訪問については、その是非を巡って議論となっていましたが、米国内においても訪問への反対意見があったところ、やはり独断的で無謀な行動であったとの批難の論調が見られます。

The decision by House Speaker Pelosi (D-Calif.) to visit Taiwan was, as Thomas Friedman wrote earlier this week, “utterly reckless, dangerous and irresponsible.”

The Hillの記事の引用ですが、訪台については、そもそもバイデン大統領自身が望んでいなかったことに触れ、ペロシ氏を批難しています。

"thumbed one’s nose"というのは、手の親指を鼻の頭に当てて、相手に対する軽蔑や嘲笑を表す行為を指し、

一部報道では、ペロシ氏が台湾訪問を決断した背景には自身の政治家としてのキャリアに箔をつけたいという意向があったのではないかとも言われており、政権の意向を無視した、ないがしろにした、という見方が身内からも出ているというにが実情のようです。

quiet quitting

新型コロナによるパンデミックが現代にもたらしたインパクトは計り知れませんが、とりわけ労働、働き方に対する考え方にもたらした変化は大きいと言えるでしょう。

リモートワークの浸透はそのひとつですが、リモートワークという環境下において、働くという事に対する意識の変化を引き起こしているということがあります。

なる言葉がトレンドだそうです。この"quiet quitting"とはどういう概念なのでしょうか？

"quit"という動詞に、（仕事を）辞める、という意味があることはご存知かと思います。そうすると、"quiet quitting"とは、静かに仕事を辞めること、というような解釈になりそうですが、周りに黙って、こっそりと退職する、というようなことではなく、仕事に対するコミットメント、即ち、注力の度合いを下げる、ということを言うようです。"quiet 〜"は、敢えて周囲にそれと分からないように（あるいは公言することなく、自分の中で）仕事に取り組む姿勢を変える、ということだと思われます。

仕事一辺倒でバリバリと働いてきた人達が、パンデミックを境に、またリモートワークを余儀無くされたことをきっかけに、働き方、仕事に対する姿勢を見直すことになったことが背景にあるようです。私生活と仕事の境目が限りなく曖昧なものになっていることも一因としてあるようです。

言われてみれば、思い当たる節が無いでもありません。私の周りにも・・・！？

ところで、"quiet"、"quit(ting)"とQで始まる単語が連続しますが、"quiet"も"quit"も語源は同じで、ラテン語で休むという意味の動詞quiescereから来ています。

"quiet quitting"とは、周りに分からないようにこっそりと休む（サボる）、と言い換えることもできるかも知れません！？

hold sway

2020年の大統領選で敗北し、それを受け発生した年明けの暴動の責任を追求されているトランプ元大統領ですが、未だその支持者は一定数がおり、また政界に強い影響力を持っているようです。

アリゾナ州やミシガン州で行われた大統領候補者予備選挙においては、トランプ氏の言動が共和党の候補者支持に影響したと分析されているそうです。

"sway"という単語は、以前も取り上げたことがありますが、揺さぶる、揺する、という意味で、そこから抽象的には相手、対象に対する影響力、支配（権）という意味もあります。

"hold sway"はそのよう影響力、支配権を持っているということですが、逆に、そういった影響力下にあることを言う場合は、"under sway"と表現します。

先日の報道によれば、フェースブックは上場後初の減収、またグーグルも四半期の業績が前年同期比を下回るなど、シリコンバレーのIT大手は業績が低下しており、今後の経営に危機感を募らせているようです。

グーグル、フェースブック共に、生産性の低下を問題に挙げており、従業員の削減も視野にあるようです。

他の記事を読んでみると、グーグルCEOであるPichai氏の発言や社内向けメッセージなどが紹介されています。CEOともなればその評価は業績向上のみであり、ここで如何に従業員の士気を上げることができるか、リストラもちらつかせながら、引き締めを図る内容となっています。

"pick up the slack"というのは、弛んでいるところ（slack）を引き締める、という意味で、お腹周りの弛みをエクササイズで引き締めるということもありますが、気を引き締める、つまり、喝を入れる、という意味でも使われます。

なお、"take up〜"という場合もあります。

実のところ、"pick up the slack"という表現を以前取り上げたことがあるのですが、同じ"pick up the slack"でも前回取り上げたのとは少し違った意味で使われているようです。それで、今回は「その2」とした次第です。

米、アルカイダ指導者を殺害 ー take out

今朝のトップニュースは、アメリカ政府が、アルカイダの指導者、ザワヒリ氏をアフガニスタンのカブールで殺害したと公表した、というものでした。

The president said that al-Zawahiri was killed in Kabul. U.S. government had multiple, independent sources confirming al-Zawahiri's whereabouts at a safehouse, a senior administration official told reporters on a call Monday evening. 2001年9月11日に起きた米同時多発テロの発生から21年、そしてそのテロの首謀者、ビンラディン氏が殺害されて11年ですが、ザワヒリ氏殺害に関しても周到な準備を進めていた模様です。

ところで、引用した部分に、

という箇所がありますが、"take out"という動詞句に注目したいと思います。

つい、食べ物の「テイクアウト」を思い浮かべてしまいますが、その意味ではないことは明らかです。

ザワヒリ氏はドローンによる攻撃により殺害されたということですが、"take out"の意味を知らなかった私は、この箇所を一読した際、ドローンで外に誘き出したのかな、と想像しました。

実のところ、"take out"には、殺害するという意味があります。

軍事的なコンテクストでは目標物等を破壊する（to destroy）という意味で使われるそうで、殺すという意味については俗語とする辞書もあります。

digital nomad

コロナ禍でリモートワークが広まりましたが、仕事内容によっては完全にリモートで遂行できる業務もあるということで、仕事場所は自宅にとどまらず、世界中どこにいても可能と豪語する向きもあるようです。

ある意味、勤務地が限定されないということの究極なのでしょうが、中には国境を越えて移動しながら働く猛者（！？）もいるそうで、こういった人達を、

digital nomad

というらしいです。アメリカではこういった"digital nomads"が1,500万人もおり、パンデミック発生以降、近年急増しているそうです。

"nomad"というのは遊牧民のことで、定住地を持たず、牧畜の生育に適した牧草地を求めて放浪を続ける人のことを指します。牧草地のことを指すギリシャ語nomosに由来するそうです。

ところで、"digital nomads"というのは、デジタル時代、つまりインターネットがあれば日常生活のほとんどの用事に困らないという時代における新しい遊牧民「的」生活スタイル、ということでしょう。

先に引用した記事で触れられていたのですが、スペインではこうした"digital nomads"向けのビザを発給しているそうです。

Authorities in Spain will unfold their plans for the digital nomad visa during the following months in an effort to attract internationals who can temporarily live in Spain while working for companies or clients outside the country.

Such a scheme would also help Spain’s economic sector to recover from the crisis caused by the Coronavirus and its new strains, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

Merriam-Websterオンラインによると、"digital nomad"という言葉の初出は1993年ということなのですが、意外にもネット全盛期よりも前から使われているということです。
