昨日、6月29日はアイフォーンが発売されて15周年という節目の日だったそうです。

正確に言うと、アメリカで初代アイフォーンが発売されたのが、ちょうど15年前の6月29日で、日本での発売はその翌年、2008年の7月だということです。

15周年を取り上げた多くの記事で、アイフォーンが如何に人々の生活や行動様式を変えたかということに触れています。

しかしながら、15年前、2007年1月にそのコンセプトが発表された際には、"flop"（失敗作）と貶されていたとは驚きです。

当時、ウインドウズのマイクロソフト社や、今はもう無くなってしまったブラックベリーのRIM社などが挙って、アイフォーンが流行ることはないだろうと言っていたそうです。

"flop"というのはものが倒れたり、落ちたりする時に立てるパタンという音を指し、そこから失敗、失敗作の意味が生じました。

アイフォーンが"flop"ではなかったことは多くの人が知るところでしょう。

その昔、テレビについて、

“Television won't be able to hold on to any market it captures after the first six months. People will soon get tired of staring at a plywood box every night.”

と言った人がいたそうですが、同じものを感じます。

busker

見慣れない単語ですが、"busker"というのはストリートパフォーマー、大道芸人のことを指すようです。

辞書で語源欄を見てみると、スペイン語buscar（to seek, to look for）から来ているようです。これが、イタリア語buscare、フランス語busquer（いずれも、to prowlの意）を経て英語に入ってきたとあります。

"prowl"には動物などが餌や獲物を求めてうろつく、という意味がありますが、人の集まるところを転々としながらパフォーマンスを披露するという大道芸人の活動形態につながったものと思われます。

恐らくは"busker"から生じたと思われる動詞、"busk"は、ストリートパフォーマンスを行う、という意味で用いられます。

Buskers can be comedians, jugglers, mimes, poets, sidewalk artists or any other type of street performer. Some cities require a permit to busk, while others only allow it in certain areas.

foul play

著名人の訃報記事からの引用です。

Actress Mary Mara "drowned while swimming" and died on Sunday, June 26 in the St. Lawrence River in New York. She was 61.

小生がまだ学生の頃だったでしょうか、テレビドラマ「ER」が日本でも人気でしたが、その「ER」にも出演した女優が亡くなったそうです。死因は遊泳中の溺死ということです。

警察が経緯を調べているそうですが、

her body showed "no signs of foul play"

とあります。

検死を行った結果についての記述ですが、"no signs of foul play"というのはこの種の報道でよく見かける表現です。

"foul play"の"foul"という形容詞には、汚いとか、嫌な、下品な、といった意味がありますが、ここでの"foul play"は犯罪、殺人、という意味です。

"foul play"にはスポーツでのファウルプレー（反則行為）の意味もあるので、どちらかと言うとそちらを先に想起してしまいますね。

この種の報道で、「事件性はないものと思われます」、などというのをよく聞きますが、それに相当する英語表現と解釈して差し支えないでしょう。

タッキー？ ー tacky

（あらかじめお断りしておきますと、今日の1語は某有名人の愛称ではありません。）

昨日の日曜日、都内に用事があり、久し振りに街中を歩きました。参院選告示後初めての週末ということあってか、街頭演説をする候補者や選挙カーにあちこちで遭遇しました。

暑い中ご苦労な事だと思いますが、どの党も候補者も議席獲得に必死なのでしょう。

アメリカもこの時期、中間選挙を見据えての動きは活発化しているようですが、民主党による献金集めが顰蹙をかっているという記事から引用です。。

A fundraising money grab by President Joe Biden and other top Dems in the wake of the Supreme Court reversal of Roe v. Wade has irked supporters — who called the move “tacky.”

“I’ve gotten six fundraising emails from Democrat candidates today,” feminist author Roxane Gay wrote on Twitter on Friday.

"tacky"という言葉で非難されているのですが、あまり聞き慣れないこの形容詞の意味は、

野暮な、

悪趣味の、

みすぼらしい、

卑俗な

といったようなものです。

アメリカ英語の口語表現だそうです。

American Heritage Dictionaryによると、駄馬のことをtackeyということに因むそうですが、そのtackeyが田舎者、垢抜けしていない無粋な人のことを指すのに使われるようになり、形容詞としての"tacky"になったそうです。

ちょっと検索してみると、"tacky"を使ったヘッドラインの例がすぐに見つかりました。

要は、見苦しい、という意味だと解釈しました。

respectfully

米医薬食品局（FDA）が、電子タバコのブランドJuulの販売差し止めを通達しました。

有害性が否定出来ないという理由によるもののようです。

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration ordered Juul Labs Inc. to stop selling its vape devices and cartridges on Thursday, saying that there is "insufficient evidence to assess the potential toxicological risks" of using the products.

Juul disputed the FDA's claims in a statement, and said the company plans to appeal the agency's decision.

電子タバコの功罪に関してはこれまでも何度か関連記事を取り上げてきました。

Juulのおかげで紙巻きタバコをやめることが出来たという人もおり、販売禁止に困惑している利用者もいるようです。

当のメーカーはこの決定に不服のようですが、その声明に、

respectfully disagree with the FDA’s findings and decision

とあるのを興味深く思いました。

"respectfully"というのは説明するまでもなく、敬意を表して、相手を尊重して、という意味ですが、続く動詞"disagree"との取り合わせが意外にも思われたのです。

"respectfully"に関しては、手紙文の末尾に、

respectfully yours

などと締め括り、これは日本語だと「敬具」くらいに相当するというのはよくご存知のことと思います。

"respectfully disagree"については、お上の裁定であるから尊重はするけれども、納得行かない、という思いが滲み出ているようです。畏れながら、同意致しかねる、といった感じでしょうか。

コーパスで検索してみると、"respectfully disagree"という用例はかなり多く、同様の言い回しには、"respectfully decline"、"respectfully dissent"などが見られます。

これらの表現はいわゆる謙譲表現であると言うことができるでしょう。

上司や立場が上の人の意見に賛成できない時に使ってみるか！？

pro rata

米食品大手のケロッグが3社に分社化すると発表しました。

子供の頃よく食べたシリアルのメーカーというイメージがありますが、シリアル以外にもスナック菓子や植物肉関連事業などがあるそうで、それぞれの事業を分社化し、多角化経営の路線から転換することに踏み切ったようです。

The Kellogg Company announced it will be spinning off its business units into three independent companies, with separate enterprises created for its snacking, cereal, and plant-based businesses. Shares of Kellogg jumped 4% on the news in early trading on Tuesday, and are up close to 9% year-to-date.

分社化の発表後、同社の株価は一時上昇したようです。

株主は3社の株式を、

pro-rata basis

で受け取るそうです。

引用した記事ではハイフンで繋がった単語として表記されていますが、そもそもの表記は"pro rata"で、ラテン語です。rataは英単語の"rate"に相当し、"pro rata"の意味するところは、割合に応じて（in proportion）、ということです。

つまり、現時点での持株の割合に応じて、分社後の3社各社の株式が各株主に割り当てられる、ということだと思われます。

片足立ちできますか？ ー balance

昨日、6月21日はヨガの日だったとは知りませんでした。「国際ヨガの日」は国連が設定したもので、世界中でヨガに関連するイベントが開催されたようです。

ヨガに因んで、ということでもないかも知れませんが、片足でバランスをとって立つことができるかどうかで、余命が違うという報告があるという記事を読みました。

51〜75歳を対象にした研究において、10秒間片足立ちが出来ない人の死亡割合は、できる人に対して統計的に有意に高いという結果が得られたそうです。

バランスを保持する能力が長生きの秘訣、という訳です。

というわけで、今日の1語は"balance"なんですが、特に難解でも、珍しくもないこの単語の語源が興味深いので取り上げました。

お手持ちの辞書にも載っていると思いますが、"balance"という単語はラテン語から来ていて、2枚のお皿、という意味なんですね。

ラテン語で、bilanxというのが語源ですが、bi-は2つを意味する接頭辞としても馴染みがあるかと思います。

lanxはお皿のこと、特に物の重さを測るためのお皿で、天秤がイメージされます。

"balance"という単語が元々測量のためのスケール（はかり）を意味するものであったことを考えると納得の行くところです。

バランスを取る、平衡を取る、という動詞の意味の"balance"はその後発展したものだそうです。

Tanner stage 2とは ー puberty

国際水泳連盟（FINA）がトランスジェンダーの水泳選手の競技参加に関する規則を明確化し、公表しました。

トランスジェンダーの選手、特に男性から女性へと転換した選手が女子の競技種目に参加するケースにおいて、競技上有利であることが問題視されていました。

FINAの新規則によれば、女子の競技種目に参加するトランスジェンダーの選手については、男性として一定の思春期発達段階を経過していないという証明を提示しなければならない、という制約が設けられることになりました。

The new eligibility policy for FINA competitions states that male-to-female transgender swimmers (transgender women) are eligible to compete in women's competitions only if "they can establish to FINA's comfortable satisfaction that they have not experienced any part of male puberty beyond Tanner Stage 2 (of puberty) or before age 12, whichever is later".

今日の単語は"puberty"ですが、これは思春期、あるいは成熟期という日本語に訳されます。

ラテン語に由来する単語で、pubesというのは体毛、陰毛のことです。人間が生まれてから、徐々に成長して、陰毛が生え始める頃、自らの性を意識し始める段階が思春期、即ち"puberty"と呼ばれる段階です。

記事ではTanner Stage 2 (of puberty) という聞き慣れない言葉が使われています。これはタナースケール、もしくはタナー分類と呼ばれる、男性、女性の発達段階を5段階に分ける考え方で、イギリスの小児科医ジェームズ・タナー氏の名前に因むものです。

タナーステージ2とは、"puberty"における第二次性徴に相当するようです。

Typically boys will begin puberty at ages 11-12 and complete the process by 16-17. Tanner Stage Two is the second of five stages of puberty. While puberty timetables vary according to a number of factors, boys can have completed stage 2 and entered stage 3 by the age of 12 or 13. In some cases it may be earlier or later.

つまり、トランスジェンダーの選手（男性→女性）は、第二次性徴以降の性的発達段階を経ていないという証明ができなければ、女性選手としての競技参加ができない、ということです。

具体的にどのような証明を行うのか、埒外の人間には想像もつきませんが、この新規則の公表を受けてLGBTQ+の団体はFINAの規則は非科学的であると反発しています。

報道によれば、陸上競技においても同様の規則を採用する動きがあるとのことで、今後議論を呼びそうです。

epitaph

ウェブブラウザの草分け的存在ともいえる、インターネットエクスプローラー（通称、IE）が26年の歴史に幕を閉じました。

ウィンドウズ95を学生時代に初めて購入した小生は、IEというとインターネットサーフィンが流行した当時を思い出します。ダイヤルアップ接続に必要なモデム設定やIEのアップデートに苦心した懐かしい思い出があります。

IEの終焉に際して大真面目にお墓を建てた人がいるそうです。"epitaph"というのはそのお墓に刻む墓碑銘のことです。

ギリシャ語から来ており、epi-は上や外を意味する接頭辞、taphosが墓を意味するギリシャ語です。

墓の外面に刻んだ言葉、あるいは故人が埋葬された場所の上で故人に捧げられる言葉、というのが"epitaph"の意味するところです。

"epitaph"としては、故人の生前の功績などを顕彰する言葉が用いられます。

IEの"epitaph"は、

"He was a good tool to download other browsers."

という、冗談とも皮肉ともつかないものでしたが、お墓のセレモニーはネット上で話題になったようです。

今年始めの1月6日に、トランプ元大統領の支持者らがワシントンD.C.の議事堂を襲った事件については、先日よりトランプ氏の責任を追及すべく、

委員会でのヒアリングが下院で行われています。

暴動の直前、トランプ氏が副大統領のマイク・ペンス氏を"wimp"と罵っていたという証言が報じられています。

An assistant to former President Trump told the House Jan. 6 select committee that Trump called Vice President Mike Pence a “wimp” during a phone call between the two men just before the Capitol riot.

Nicholas Luna said he remembered hearing the word “wimp” from the call.

"wimp"は弱虫という意味です。

"wimp"の語源については、語源不詳としている辞書もありますが、"whimper"（メソメソ泣く）という動詞からの逆成とする説明もみられます。

興味深いことに、Online Etymology Dictionaryの解説によれば、漫画のポパイに出てくる登場人物にウィンピー（Wimpy）がおり、弱々しい性格の登場人物の名前が影響している、という説もあるそうです。

トランプ氏はペンス氏に対して、"wimp"のみならず、"p word"でも罵ったそうですが、口汚い発言で知られる氏ですから、さもありなんと思わされます。

火事場泥棒 ー profiteer

米国内でのガソリン価格高騰が深刻です。ロシアによるウクライナ侵攻後、原油の調達に支障を来している状況があるというのは多くの人が理解しているところです。

ところが、ホワイトハウスは価格高騰の要因を追及するにあたって、その矛先をロシアから石油会社に変えてきているということです。

大手石油会社はガソリン価格高騰を緩和する努力を怠り、price gouge（価格吊り上げ）により暴利を貪っていると批判し始めたようです。

ホワイトハウスのこの動きには選挙対策、つまり中間選挙を見据えた、有権者へのアピールという見方もあります。

The White House on Wednesday shifted from blaming Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine to oil companies for record-high gas prices, calling on them to "be patriots" and do more to lower prices.

バイデン大統領は石油大手に圧力をかけてガソリン価格の低減を成果としてアピールしたいのでしょう。

というくだりに注目します。

"profiteer"も不当に利益を得るというネガティブな意味合いがあります。

ここでは"global crisis"、すなわちウクライナ危機を口実にして儲けている、という非難であり、日本語で言えば「火事場泥棒」と言うのに近いでしょう。

"profit"（利益、利潤）という意味の名詞に接尾辞-eerが付いたものですが、この接尾辞-eerには軽蔑のニュアンスがあるということです。

up by a third

今日は算数のお勉強です。

最近流行が懸念されている、サル痘の感染者数についての記事をお読み下さい。

A FURTHER 104 monkeypox cases have been identified in the UK - bringing the total number of infections to 470.

It's a rise of 28 per cent on figures reported on Friday - as new cases continue to be detected.

記事のタイトルを見ると、

Monkeypox cases up by a third with 104 new infections

とあります。

"up by a third"が意味するところを理解しようとして一瞬戸惑いました。

"up"が意味するのは増加だろうと分かりましたが、"by a third"の"a third"は3分の１のはずで、日本語にしてみたら「3分の1（ほど）増加する」ということになり、どうにも奇妙な表現のように思われたのです。

本文を読んでみると、先週金曜日の感染者数が366名であったところ、104名の新規感染者、即ち約28パーセントの増加、ということで、"up by a third"が言わんとするところは、やはり約3分の1の増加、ということなのでした。（厳密には28%と3分の1では計算結果に差があるように思われますが。）

日本語的に考えるならば（！？）、増加という表現と分数は取り合わせが悪いと言うか、結びつきにくいように思われます。減少であれば、3分の1（ほど）減った、とか4分の3に減少、といった言い方はすんなり頭に入ってくるのですが・・・。

ところで、"up by a third"のような、増加を分数で表す表現は英語では普通に用いられているようで、実例を多く確認することができます。

Recent statistics from the CDC suggest that the number of people diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in the United States increased by one third between 1990 and 1998.

この類いの言い回しはもっぱら"by a third"、"by one third"などに限られるという訳ではなさそうですが、"by two thirds"（3分の2）や"by three fourths"（4分の3）といったパターンは少ないようで、あまり見られません。

時効 ー statute of limitations

いわゆる時効のことを英語で、

statute of limitations

と言います。

法律の専門家ではありませんので厳密、正確な説明をすることはできませんが、一定期間が経過すると罪や法令違反に問えなくなってしまうことを制度化したものが時効です。

米ABCテレビで起きたセクハラ事件の審理で、時効が認められて、訴えが破棄されたという記事からの引用です。

A New York State judge on Wednesday dismissed a lawsuit filed last year against Michael Corn, the former "Good Morning America" boss who was accused of sexual assault in a case that rocked ABC News and left staffers up in arms.

"statute of limitations"を辞書で引くと、出訴期限法と載っています。法律の名称のようにも見えるのですが、記事ではいわゆる時効という概念を示す言葉として用いているようで、

the statute of limitations… had expired

というように用いられています。

また同記事の後半では下記のようなくだりがあります。

But Jaffe ruled that while some of Corn's alleged conduct was "boorish, ill-advised, and inappropriate," it did not meet the threshold to state a claim that he had fostered a hostile work environment prior to the limitations period expiring.

ここでは単に"limitations (period)"なんですが、やはり時効のことを指していると思われます。

手元にあるOxfor Dictionary of Lawsでは、"limitation of actions"という用語が掲載されており、以下のように定義されています。

Statutory rules limiting the time within which civil actions can be brought. 

昔読んだ本で時効の概念について説明したものがあり、記憶では権利行使に期限を定めるのが時効の考え方であるというものがありました。例えば、お金を借りた人が、時効を理由に金を返済しないでも咎められないという時効の制度は理不尽なようではあるけれども、お金を貸した人が返済を要求する権利を行使せず、「権利の上にあぐらをかく」ような姿勢を認めない仕組みが時効である、というような内容だったと記憶します。

セクハラ事件の詳細は知りませんが、時間を置かず訴えるべきだったのかも知れません。

balaclava

今日の1語、balaclavaとは何のことかご存知でしょうか？

答えは、目出し帽のことです。顔面をすっぽりと覆うようにして、目の部分だけが開いているものです。

Dozens of masked men, suspected of being tied to a White nationalist group, were arrested near an Idaho pride event on Saturday after they were found packed in the back of a U-Haul truck.

Couer d'Alene police confirmed in a press briefing that 31 individuals from a variety of states were inside the U-Haul after it was stopped by local and Idaho State Police several blocks from the pride event on Saturday afternoon. 

The several dozen men inside the truck wore khakis, navy blue shirts and beige hats with white balaclavas covering their faces and police say that some of them wore patches that identified with Patriot Front, a White supremacist group, according to some civil rights organizations.

以前、"half-masking"という表現を取り上げたことがありましたが、その際、"half mask"は目出し帽のように顔を覆う被り物のことだと触れました。

この"balaclava"は登山者などが防寒のために着用する毛糸の帽子、ニット帽のことであるという説明もあります。

ところで、"balaclava"の名前はウクライナのクリミア半島にある地名Balaklavaに由来します。

時節柄、興味深い語源ではないでしょうか。

バリデーション？ ー validation

情報システムの仕事をしている人が「バリデーション」と聞いてまず思い浮かべるのは、コンピュータシステムのバリデーション（機能動作検証作業）ではないでしょうか。

私も多少関わった経験から、そんな刷り込みにも似た認識が出来上がってしまっています。

そういう訳ですので、以下に引用する記事で用いられている、

male validation

という表現には戸惑いを覚えたというのが正直なところです。

A Stanford professor has been criticized for writing 'offensive and disparaging' tweets describing female attorneys who represent men accused of assault as 'skirts' who are 'desperate to prove they are real lawyers'.   

Michele Dauber, who is based in California, criticized a number of lawyers including Camille Vasquez, who played a key role in Johnny Depp's recent defamation case against his ex-wife Amber Heard.

Following the case, in which a which a jury in Virginia found Ms Heard liable for three counts of defamation against Mr Depp, and him liable for one count against her, Ms Vasquez shot to international prominence.

While much of the attention given to the lawyer has been positive, she has also faced some negativity, including the tweets by Michele Dauber, which described the attorney as a 'pick me girl' - a phrase normally used to refer to women who crave male validation.

またまたジョニー・デップさんと元妻ハードさんのスキャンダルの記事で恐縮ですが、関心は英語表現ですので悪しからず。

元夫婦間の名誉毀損を巡る裁判はデップさん側の勝訴で幕を閉じましたが、デップさん側の弁護を担当した女性に対して、人格を否定するような批判がされている、というものです。

批判の発言の内容というのは、引用の最後にでてくるのですが、

というもので、ここに"male validation"とあるのを取り上げたいと思います。

上述しましたように、"validation"と聞くとコンピュータシステムのことを想起してしまうのですが、"validate"という動詞の意味には、

to recognize, establish, or illustrate the worthiness or legitimacy of

(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

という定義があり、コンピュータシステムに限らず、物事の価値や正当性などを認めることを表現するのに用いられます。

ただ、"male validation"という言葉の意味合いを理解するのには、これでもまだ少しぼんやりとしているように思われます。

Merriam-Websterではさらに、"self-validation"という表現を取り上げており、以下のように定義しています。

the feeling of having recognized, confirmed, or established one's own worthiness or legitimacy

この定義を読んでピンと来たのですが、"self-validation"とは自分自身の価値が認められたという気持ちのこと、つまり承認欲求が満たされた状態のことを指すと分かります。

"male validation"については辞書に載ってはいませんが、"self-validation"という表現の延長と考えるならば、自らの価値を男性に認めてもらいたいという（女性の）気持ち、欲求、ということになるでしょう。

Latinx

最近ラテン語の勉強を再開しました。あらゆる品詞が複雑に格変化することは元より、名詞の性（男性、女性、中性）を覚えなくてはならないのが大変です。

初歩の教科書では、語尾が-aで終わる第一変化名詞からスタートしますが、例外を除いては女性名詞である、と解説されています。

そんな勉強をしているので、同じくラテン語系の言語であるスペイン語においても、名詞に同じような性質があることは理解できます。

ところが、最近、"Latinx"という単語が取り沙汰されているということを知りました。主に書き言葉で使われるようですが、発音は語尾の-xを「エクス」と発音し、敢えてカタカナにすれば「ラティネクス」のようになるそうです。

"Latinx"というのは、"Latino"でもなく、また"Latina"でもない、つまり男性、女性を区別しない、故に差別的でない表現なのだということらしいです。

"Latinx"と表現する他、"Latine"という言い方も同様です。

スペイン語の名詞において、語尾が-oとなるのは男性、-aは女性という規則性があるところ、これらの語尾を-x、もしくは-eで置き換えたのが"Latinx"であり、"Latine"ということなのです。

Ocasio-Cortez went on to claim that while “Latinx” is more convenient in written form, another gender-neutral term, “Latine,” is a better alternative when speaking. She also suggested both terms are comparable to the Spanish word “nosotres,” which translates to a gender-neutral “us” or “we.”

多様な性自認に寛容であろうとする現代において、言語や言葉遣いに性差別的なものを見ようとする動きが顕著になっています。

一方で、こういう傾向に異を唱える人もいます。

"Latinx"という言葉について、そもそもスペイン語を母語とする当事者が好ましいとは思っておらず、性自認に寛容であろうとする一部の活動家などが推進しているに過ぎない、という意見です。

It soon became clear it was no joke. Latinx was becoming an official term on elite college campuses, popular among academics, progressives, young activists and LGBTQ groups who wanted gender-neutral terminology. 性自認に寛容であることは決して悪いこととは思わないものの、行き過ぎると言葉狩りのようにも感じられるということでしょう。

外国語の文法の教科書は書き換えを迫られるのでしょうか。

「〜はマスト」 ー de rigueur

パンデミックにより一部の労働者においては定着した感のあるリモートワークですが、オフィス回帰を促す経営層との意識差については先日の投稿でも見てきた通りです。

労使間関係のダイナミズムはマーケットの状況、即ち市場に人材が溢れているのか、それとも足らないのかに左右されるものですが、今日ではどちらかと言えば企業が必要とする人材が不足している傾向のようです。従って、経営側は労働者確保のためには、リモートワークというオプションはある意味必須条件ともなりつつある、というのが以下に引用する記事の主旨です。

という部分に着目しましょう。

イタリックにしましたが、最初読んだ時はすんなりと頭に入って来ず、スペルミスかと思いました。

この表現を知りませんでしたが、"de rigueur"でひとかたまり、よく見ればフランス語のスペルのようです。

実際、"de rigueur"はフランス語であり、"rigueur"は英単語では"rigor"に相当します。

お手持ちの辞書にもきっと載っていると思いますが、意味は、

礼式上必要である

というもので、この表現が用いられるのは主としてドレスコードなどを記載する場合です。

それは例えば、会食等において出席者はスーツ、ネクタイ着用が必須、といった具合のドレスコードのことであり、フランス語では"costume de rigueur"と呼ばれます。

この"de rigueur"という表現がフランス語のスペルそのままで英語に入ってきたようですが、上記の引用例に見られるように、コンテクストはドレスコードに限らず、現代風に言えば、「〜はマスト」（必須である）という時のフレーズとして広く用いられるようになりました。

コーパスでいくつか用例を拾ってみました。

スペルのみならず、発音がややこしそうです。rigueurに見られるフランス語特有のスペル、-eurはamateurやentrepreneurといった単語にも見られるものです。

実際、これらの単語もそのまま英単語になっていますから、"de rigueur"を会話の中で使ってみるというチャレンジをしても良いかも！？

ジョンソン英首相に対する不信任投票が行われましたが、否決されました。

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson survived a no-confidence vote Monday that could have ousted him from power as discontent with his rule grows amid a fight for his political life. 

Conservative members of parliament voted 211-148 in favor of letting Johnson stay in power during a secret ballot in Westminster.

パンデミック下の外出制限を発動しておきながら首相官邸でパーティに興じるという不適切な行動に批判が高まっていました。そこへ最近の物価高なども相俟って、身内の保守党内からも辞任を求める声があがっていたようです。

さて、今日の1語は記事本文からではなく、写真からなのですが、ジョンソン首相辞任を求めるデモ参加者のプラカードに、

Boris. Putting the Blight into Blighty.

とあったのが目に留まった次第です。

"blight"は植物が枯れる病気のことで、荒廃、衰退という意味があります。

一方の"blighty"は韻を踏んでいるようですが、英国（イングランド）のことを意味するそうで、これは知りませんでした。

ボリス（ジョンソン氏）は英国に荒廃をもたらす元凶であるから辞めさせるべき、というところでしょうか。

"blighty"というのは、英軍人が祖国であるイギリスを愛着を込めて呼ぶ際の表現だそうで、第一次大戦の頃よく使われていたそうです。

語源はヒンディー語にあるそうで、英国のインド統治時代の名残りかと思われます。

フェースブックCOO辞任 ー leaning in

先週でしたか、フェースブック（現メタ社）COOのサンドバーグ氏が辞任すると報じられました。

企業社会で活躍する女性の象徴でもある同氏が流行らせた言葉に、

lean(ing) in

という表現があります。

Ten years ago, Sheryl Sandberg was on top of the world.

Facebook had just gone public, making Sandberg a billionaire. She had played a major role in creating that wealth.

While she reveled in the company's success, it was not the only project she cared about. "lean"は傾く、傾斜する、という意味の動詞ですが、2013年のサンドバーグ氏の著作で"lean in"がビジネス界の流行語となりました。

著作を読んだ訳ではありませんが、"lean(ing) in"の意味するところは、女性が社会進出する中で、存在感を出すためにより意欲的、積極的に取り組む、それこそ、会議のテーブルに身を乗り出して（leaning in）訴えるように、というようなことのようです。

引用したCNNのオピニオン記事ではサンドバーグ氏のキャリア遍歴を振り返りつつ、一世を風靡した"leaning in"を体現した同氏と、フェースブックが起こした不祥事、最終的には辞任による幕引きという凋落に触れています。

この表現のトレンドを捉えて、Merriam-Webster Dictionaryでは以下のような解説をしています。

Lean in became a business motto in 2013, taken from the title of the book Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead written by Sheryl Sandberg, the Chief Operating Officer of Facebook, and Nell Scovell, a writer and Sandberg's collaborator. Sandberg's book outlines business strategies to help women achieve success, and its title perfectly paints a picture of what Sandberg believes women need to do to move up in the business world: to press ahead, to project confidence, to "sit at the table" and physically lean in to make herself heard.

時代はオバマ大統領の政権時代、女性の社会進出が進み、また女性のキャリアと家庭生活のバランスを巡る議論が活発化し、"lean-in generation"とも呼ばれました。

恐らくは2013年頃に書かれたと思われるMerriam-Websterの解説は、"lean in"という表現について、トレンドにはなっているものの、広く使われて、意味合いとして定着するまでには至っていないとして、辞書のエントリに追加するにはもうしばらく様子を見極める必要がある、と締め括っています。

サンドバーグ氏の辞任により、辞書入りはやはり見送りでしょうか。

知らなかった"colour"の意味 ー Trooping the Colour

エリザベス女王の在位70年を祝賀する式典がバッキンガム宮殿で華やかに執り行われました。

The Queen beamed as she made an appearance on the Buckingham Palace balcony as part of the Trooping the Colour ceremony, marking the first day of her Platinum Jubilee celebrations.

The Queen, who turned 96 in April, dressed up for the important royal occasion in a pastel blue outfit, which featured white embroidered detailing.

御年96歳になられた女王とロイヤルファミリーの様子を伝える記事がトップで報じられています。

また、多くの記事では、

the Trooping the Colour

というセレモニーの様子を撮影した動画を見ることができます。

この"the Trooping the Colour"というセレモニーですが、日本語では、

軍旗敬礼式

（研究社英和大辞典）

などと訳されています。

軍隊、騎兵中隊を意味する"troop"ですが、動詞として、軍隊を行進させる、という意味があります。尤も、動詞として用いられるのは、"troop the colour(s)"という言い回しに限られるそうで、英国国王（女王）の誕生日の恒例行事として、軍旗を部隊の前をゆっくりと行進させることを指します。

ところで、"colour"（color）についてですが、言うまでもなく、色、カラーのことです。

ところが、"troop the colour(s)"における"colour"には、国旗、軍旗という意味があるのです。不勉強にして知りませんでした。

お手持ちの英和辞典を引いていただければ必ず載っていると思いますが、色彩や顔色といった、よく知っている意味に続いて、載っていると思います。

"color"はこれらの基本的な意味に加えて、"distinctive mark of identification"、即ち特定のグループや団体のアイデンティティーとなる色や記章、制服などを指す意味で用いられるようになり、さらに軍旗や国旗などの意味でも使われるようになったそうです。

従って、"the Queen's colour"は英国国旗を意味し、"salute the colors"とは国旗に敬礼する、という意味になります。

draw back the curtain

米俳優のジョニー・デップさんと、元妻であるハードさんの法廷闘争が漸く終結したようです。

といっても、小生はデップさんのファンという訳でもなく、セレブのスキャンダルにも興味はありませんので、詳細は知りません。

この1〜2か月くらい、グーグルニュースやツイッターを見ていると、両者の言い分を報じるヘッドラインとリードが毎日のように目に付いてはいたのですが、読みたいとも思わずスルーしていました。

今日のトップニュースでは、判決が下され、デップさんが勝訴したということです。

The jury believed Johnny Depp. After a six-week defamation trial that pitted Depp against his ex-wife, actress Amber Heard, a Virginia jury delivered a rare verdict: They awarded Depp $15 million in damages. The jury also said Depp's lawyer defamed Heard.

夫婦喧嘩は犬も食わない、と言いますが、ここのところ頻繁に目に付く記事は、ヘッドラインを読むだけでも、不快を催すようなものだったように思います。

引用したオピニオン記事では、今回の裁判沙汰について、

the trial drew back the curtain on the insecurities, vacuousness, and even nihilism that co-stars with many red-carpet celebrities

と評していますが、詳細はともかくとして、同感です。

"draw back the curtain"は、カーテンを開け放して、隠れていたものを露わにする、という意味です。

辞書では、"draw the curtain (on or over)"が載っていると思います。こちらは、カーテンを引いて隠す、という意味です。

引いていたカーテンを開けるのが"draw back"という訳です。

デップさんやハードさんのファンはこんな醜い争いを見たくはなかったでしょう。

fexting

ファーストレディ、すなわちバイデン大統領夫人である、ジル・バイデンさんが雑誌のインタビューで使った、"fexting"という単語が取り沙汰されています。

話はバイデン氏が副大統領であった時に遡るようなのですが、夫妻は意見の対立があった時も表向きには口論する姿を見せずに、"fexting"によりしのいでいた、ということなのですが、この"fexting"とは一体何なのでしょう？

WASHINGTON (AP) — When President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden disagree, they don’t hash it out in front of other people. Instead, she says, they argue by text — “fexting” as they call it.

Jill Biden also told Harper’s Bazaar magazine in an interview that her divorce from her first husband taught her to be independent and that she has drilled that lesson into her daughter and granddaughters.

上記に引用したAPの記事には詳しい説明が無いのですが、ジル夫人が意図した"fexting"の意味というのは、

fighting and texting

のことだそうで、text(ing)（メールやSNSのメッセージ上）で口論する（fight）ことを指すようです。

ところが、タブロイド紙のニューヨークポスト紙によれば、"fexting"には別の意味で使われることもあり、それが如何わしい意味合いだと言うのです。

But while the Bidens might think the slang term is a cute amalgamation of the words “fighting” and “texting,” Urban Dictionary defines the word as a crude colloquialism that actually means “f–king while texting.”

以前取り上げた、"sexting"とほぼ同義の意味合いで用いられるようです。

"fexting"というのはネット世代の若者の造語だろうと思います。ファーストレディの発言があげつらわれてしまったのは、大人が若者言葉をよく知らずに使うと思わぬ失態になりかねないという一例かも知れません。

"fexting"をネット検索すると、如何わしい意味の他にも、"fake"と"texting"を併せた単語という解釈で、スマホでメッセージを打っているようなふりをする、という意味でも使われるそうです。
